If you were Saban and you needed to address the QB situation, how would you go about it. Remember to address the consequenses of your actions to the cap and future of the team, as Saban would have to. So no giving up the entire draft for Manning.
My suggestion is to pick up Croyle in the 2nd round and hunt for someone like Volek or Rohan Davey, and try out the 2. Save the first rounder for an immediate threat like Sinorice. KEEP Ricky until his legs fall off! 2 backs are needed in this league to survive.

I'm no expert on the salary cap but I think we are about 13.9 million over right now (based on Clumps estimations). we currently have 8 draft choices (1st,2nd,3rd,4th,6th,6th,7th,7th). I would make the following transactions:

Cut/retire:
Sam Madison
Junior Seau
Reggie Howard
Keith Traylor

restructure:
Booker
Mare
Thomas

Re-Sign:
Morris
Minor
Homles
Glenn
Bell
Jones

Sign:
W.Witherspoon
L.Bentley
T.Williams

Trade:
Williams to Denver for a 2nd rounder

Draft:

1st - OT W.Justice
2nd - QB B.Croyle
2nd - S G.Blue
3rd - NT G.Watson
4th - OLB R.McIntosh
no 5th
6th - CB A.Madison
6th - WR D.Aromashodu
7th - OG R.Smith
7th - QB M.Vick

I would give Marcus Vick a chance to make the team which he could if he kept his head straight. These moves would give us a good team

I think to keep going in the right direction we need to address the QB situation now. We need a young QB we can trust for the next 6 or 7 years. Every year we wait puts us that much farther away. I would either try for Carr, Harrington, or a draft pick.

Pick up a FA QB.
Pick a QB in the draft.
Keep Ricky, he makes us a better team just with him in the line up.

Yeah that...
FA: Someone like Weinke to compete with Gus, but not "expected" to be a long-term answer; worst case is you've got a solid backup either way; best case is the FA ends up being better than Gus to "some" degree.
...AND...
Rookie: Target Croyle, Whitehurst or Jacobs in RD's 2-3. Screw "BPA". This team has neglected drafting QB's and been paying for it for way too long now.

Berlin, and either Gus, the FA or Lemon do not make the team.
The FA's contract would need to be structured accordingly in case he's the odd man out. This "could" be done with a guy like Weinke or someone on a similar talent level. Note that I'm only using Weinke as a "relative talent level" example here. I'm not at all saying he should be the guy.

I'm not sure what price they will command on the open market but I would make a push for Josh McCown or Pat Ramsey in Free Agency. If we are able to land one of them then we cut Gus Frerotte. The salaries should cancel each other out, though there might be a cap hit cutting Gus. After that I would kick back at our 16 spot and if Cutler falls that low, grab him. If he isn't available I would wait until the 4th or 5th round (depending on the combine results) and draft Meyer(if he gets snagged before that, take Gradkowski). The only other options I might explore are trading for Carr or Rivers which would eliminate the options I just suggested.

I would sign Le charles Bentley to play Center or Guard, Keep Rex to play either center or RG.
Draft the Best LT prospect Winston (UM) or Winston(USC) in the first. The line should be set.
Keep Ricky,Ronnie,Sammy, Let Travis go.
Sign TO to a Free agent contract (don't make a trade)
Keep all of our picks and draft like last year.
Our D could use some youth everywhere.
Sign Nate Clemments so we would be set at corner with Poole and Clemments
and at nickle with Daniels Yaramiah and Shulters at Saftey.
Up front I would give Traylor one more year, Carter, Holliday,JT, D Bowens,Manny, and Vickerson, should make Zgonina expendable.
I would bring in two more young D lineman to compete, and Give coach some options.
Lb I would let Junior go, I would test Eddie Moore soon and maybe show him the door also, Zach, Channing, Sragin, and Pope can get the job done, we probably won't be able to sign Julian Peterson, But I think Kendrell Bell will be available from KC, he did't fit into Gunthers D and could be a cap casualty. I would bring in Kendrell and some young guys for competition.
I would let Sam,Seth, and Stockar Go, Booker, Olindo, Howard and Jeno need to restructure,
Nick can bring in any QB, with a strong line and threats like Ronnie, Ricky, McMike, CC, and TO, Sage can be all pro.

You had some good points up until the TO thing.
No way in hell does any team respect you with that garbage on your team! He will ruin the name of the team and be what he is...a self centered cancer.
I like the Bell idea.
We might want to consider bringing in Hutchinson from Seattle.

TO could come cheap and may be a good teamate with Nick and Mr H and his checkbook. TO wants big bucks and Mr H will make sure he earns it. Mr H does not waste money that is why he sued Ricky. TO will have an incentive laded contract and he likes money, he will have to be a good camper or he will lose all chances for the big bucks.

I like Bentley and I would like to sign hutch also, but I don't think it is realistic to sign both guys.

Toniu Fonoti could come in rather inexpensively and be a Challenge at RG, could only make us better.

I think we cut Jeno to sign Hutch. To a long term cap freindly deal

Cut Booker and sign Reggie Wayne. To a long term cap freindly deal.

I am Nick Saban, and this is what I would do:

Cut or Retiring Players, Resign all others:
Seau
Howard
Madison
Zgonina
Moore
T. Jones
Sage
Mcintosh
W. Smith
McKinney
Minor

Sign:
Givens/T. Owens - 1 of them
McCown/Wright/Brees - 1 of them
Demps/Tank Williams/Archuleta - 1 of them
Bently
Davenport
Witherspoon
Townsend/Woodson/Clements - 1 of them

I'm assuming that if we sign one of the high priced FA, we won't get another. So, with that said, I do not expect to get Owens, Brees, and Clements. Just some combination like Brees, Givens, Townsend; or Clements, Givens, McCown; etc..

If we sign a CB, then no S. If we sign a CB, then no S. I'm simply listing all these players as the options I would look at

Trade:
Ricky Williams for a 1st

If I can get a 1st for Ricky, I take it. I would hopefully be able to draft one of the OL and DB I listed above with my two 1st round picks, and one of the QB's in the 2nd.

With our two 1st and our 2nd, Draft ONE of each position (if possible in any particular order):
OL - Winston (UM) Winston (USC) McNeil (UAB)
DB - Williams (VT) Huff (UT) Bing (USC) Cromartie (FSU) Hill (Clemson)
QB - Jacobs (Bowling Green) Croyle (Alabama) Whitehurst (Clemson)

Here is my somewhat realistic 2006 Lineup:
QB - Gus/McCown/Jacobs/Lemon
RB - Brown/Davenport/Morris
FB - Barnes
WR - Chambers/Givens/Booker/Welker
TE - McMichael/unchanged
OL - Bently/McNeil/Carey/McDougle/Hadnot/Alabi/Ephraim

DL - Taylor/Holliday/Traylor/Wright/Carter/Roth/Vickerson
LB - Thomas/Crowder/Witherspoon/Spragan/Pope/Rogers/Glenn
CB - Clements/Poole/Williams (VT)/Thomas/Jackson
S - Schulters/Daniels/Bell/Tillman

If we have two 1st round and one 2nd round picks, I think it's possible to draft Williams, McNeil, and Jacobs. With our cap space, Clements/Bently/Witherspoon/McCown/Davenport/Givens is possible, with the exception that there will be competition for them.

PS: Don't know about the cap situation, so don't bash me by telling me it's impossible because of the cap or what not. This is just what I would do, if possible.
:dolphins:

as far as the QB position goes I'd draft Croyle in the second, sign UFA McCown or get a cheap trade done for Ramsey...then let the competition begin...

I don't know the college players like many of you, but I would at least do this. I would trade Ricky (let's for a second - to be reasonable), in order to address the QB problem. Maybe that second gets us a good young QB, or we package it with our first to move up a bit for a guy Saban wants (but keep in mind, no reaching too far). I don't think Saban would reach. Sure, what the hell, go after another veteran if available as an upgrade to Gus' current role as a mentor and caretaker. If not, let Gus go until the rookie is ready or Gus bombs out.
My main point is, i would certainly let RW go because we have Brown and Morris is a good backup. Ricky makes us better, but we need a good QB for the future. If trading RW helps get us that, then go for it. Especially while he has still got value after a good comeback and still wants to play. Also, he needs to go before his teeny contract becomes an issue and he asks for a big one. By then, we'd need to get rid of him and teams might not give us as good compensation if they know we need tro dump him for salary. This is the year to do it IMO and Saban will. And I sincerely wish Ricky well too.
