Whatever happened to Wade Smith??

Hudson Houck moved him to center to backup McKinney, but Smith got hurt and was placed on IR. Another guy that's probably gone this offseason.

Where did you get that impression?

really, I thought he was pretty good

He will be back next year to compete for the back-up C/G spot. I think he is the kind of versatile guy ya need on the bench that can come in and play when needed. He was on IR last year after breaking his forearm in TC. We then had to sign Ephraim to be the back-up for the C/G position.

I doubt he starts but is a good option for depth.

I don't think so. He was "servicable" at LT considering he was a rookie at the time and didn't play there a lot in college. Everyone remembers him for the Colts game where Freeney made him look like a turnstyle but Freeney has done that to a lot of left tackles since then. Freeney gave Ogden a torrid time last season so it happens to the best of them. (btw I'm in no way comparing Smith to Ogden incase anyone gets that crazy idea in their heads  ) I also think that Colts game did a lot of damage to his confidence and it was around the 13th game of the season so he may have it the "rookie wall" by then.
I think it is worth keeping Smith around as he will be pretty cheap, he's athletic and can play a number of positions.

I am still looking forward to seeing him under Houck. He had a lot of athleticism but no pro coaching. He could make a solid center and allow us to keep Hadnot at RG.

He will likely be in the mix come camp time, imo.

Hopefully he can contribute, it would be nice to have one of Wannstedt's picks pan out. Especially since the guy was a 3rd rnd pick.

He'll be the backup center this year IMO, and in the future he may be a guy who can step in and allow us to make the starter a cap casualty.

No one knows what his 'status' is with the team ...

For all we know - he 'could' end up as our starting center .... doubtful - but there just hasn't been much said or rumored about his progress this offseason ... Our pursuit of Mawae and Bentley give pretty good clues, albeit, I don't think anyone projects Smith to be Mawae or Bentley as a Center or any other position.

He should be working pretty hard in the weight room right now ....

I doubt if he gets cut before TC... He's making only $460,000 a year. Thats not top tier money in any sense....

Watch the game against the bengals two years ago Justin Smith abused him as well. he looked like a bull fighter saying ole as the ran by him. Another brillant Wanny move we moved up to draft him.

See, it's ridiculous statements like this that drive me crazy! As a rookie, Wade Smith was a 3rd round draft pick and started at the most important position on the offensive line. The only player who ate his lunch that year was Dwight Freeney from Indy, who, if I remember correctly, eats a lot of LT's lunches. Wade Smith is no Jon Ogden, but he did a commendable job.

The thing about Wade Smith is that, considering he was a rookie playing out of position, he did an admirable job in 2003. And on the fateful play against Indy, Ricky was at fault too, because he was supposed to help block Freeney and failed miserably. At any rate, what concerned me was that Smith seemed to regress in 2004. Maybe that's just because he had Tony Wise coaching him; I don't know. But it seems like he has potential and I would be interested to see Houck work with him.
