Dolphins right tackle Vernon Carey was suspiciously absent from Monday night's practice at Sun Life Stadium. The team said he was excused for "personal reasons," and did not expand on the explanation.

But something is clearly up with Carey, the Dolphins' eighth-year tackle.

Hours before his excused absence, the Dolphins signed 10-year veteran right tackle Marc Colombo, who played for Tony Sparano for three years in Dallas. Carey also has the team's fourth-highest salary cap number ($7 million) and is coming off season-ending knee surgery in December.

Carey was not listed on Monday's official report of NFL transactions, so he hasn't been cut.

Sparano was asked by 790-AM radio host Jorge Sedano on Tuesday morning if Carey is upset over being asked to restructure his contract or having to compete with Colombo for the starting job. Sparano danced around the question but hinted that something is up.

"All I would say to you is that I did excuse Vernon from practice yesterday for personal reasons, and that would be the only thing that I'll say in that situation," Sparano said. "We'll have more on that here in the next couple of days."

Hoping Columbo is not a replacement for Carey. He would have been a good depth guy, but to sign him and get rid of Vernon would be a setback for this offensive line.

He is definately being asked to restructure. Which I dont object to. Problem is they are now squeezing him. The reason its taking so long is that these morons are using Columbo as leverage and likely asking Carey to take much much less than he wants to or should. Just watch. These morons will not hesitate to go with that turnstile Cowboys reject at RT if Carey dosent take a much larger pay cut than he should.

Restructure as part of a trade to Denver?

Players are asked to restructure all the time, and they're not excused from practice for it. Therefore, we can conclude there's a good chance the Phins don't expect Carey coming back, either because he is way too reluctant to restructure and they think they may have to cut him or because he will restructure and they know they will trade him.

If he doesn't restructure his contract and this FO just outright cuts him without even attempting to trade him to someone then they should all be fired immediately. Carey is still young enough and good enough to at least get a 3rd or 4th rounder for him. He would have to agree to a new deal with that new team but stuff like that gets done all the time.

a 4th round pick would be outstanding. i can't see any way in the world he'd bring a 3rd.

UGH! We don't need a freaking third- or fourth-round pick for Vernon Carey. Like you guys said, Columbo is a turnstyle!

We upgrade part of our line, and then downgrade the rest? GREAT!

What exactly are they going to do with such new found capspace in light of a potential Carey restructure? Sign another Cowboy reject?

They asked him to restructure, then gave him the day off to consider it and to aviod any injury in camp. Sparano and Carey are to meet today (8/2) to discuss it.

what they should do with it is what the jests is doing with it ,or should do with it is sign players in other poss that can help this team ,but thats just like our players to buc on the coach for doing it and not worried about winning there worried about one thing getting paid . guys imo we are very close to competeing ,where as close as a QB away.

I got a bad feeling that's what's going to happen. They're probably shoping Carey around right now to see what they can get.

Sparano said after last season that he should have set the line and let them gel...he still hasn't learned his lesson. He keeps screwing with the line and it keeps getting worse. I bet him and Ireland think they got the same Marc Columbo from 2007 when they were in Dallas and not the guy who's the 3rd worst RT in the NFL.

Sparano may be able to coach offensive lineman but he sure as heck doesn't know how to put one together.

Basically, is a Carey for Orton trade worth it to you guys? If you can get a 3rd for Carey, and need a 3rd to trade for Orton, and they have similar cap hits without Carey restructuring, it's an even trade.

What it comes down to is who's more important for your season? Orton or Carey?

Nobody's giving a 3rd for an overweight RT with bad knees on the downslope of his career. Realistically, a 5th is probably the best we'd get and I'd take it.
