Alot of people are wondering whats goin to happen to taylor and roth with the addition of merling and langford but am wondering what your opinion is concerning rod wright n vonnie. I like both players alot but with the drafting of these two players i wonder where they are going to fit?

Merling will be a SOLB, those guys will have some competition with Langford but depth is necessary up front.

I'm pretty confident that Rodrique Wright is in the good graces of the coaching staff given his play last year along with his size. Vonnie Holliday is looking to be replaced after this year.

best man wins

I say
Vonnie will be need as veteran starter
Rod will have to fight for a roster spot

I agree...i think Rod Wright's youth and the games he got under his belt last year will help his cause...I really think he can compete with starks and langford for a starting spot..As for Vonnie i'm pretty sure the tuna will keep him hoping that the young guys push him to put up a performance like 2006 when he has 10 1/2 sacks, plus he will be back in a 3-4 which he says he prefers.

He may "say" that just to say it because he knows we are going to a 3-4. So what's he going to say? Is he going to say he hates it? He's a vet and he knows how to play the media game.... he knows if he said that he'd put a black mark on his black arse with the new coaching staff. And VH is too smart to do something that stupid.

Vonnie Holliday is much better as a 4-3 end than a 3-4 end. That is blatantly obvious.

Has it been confirmed that Merling is an OLB? Because he is listed as a DE and 282 pounds.

I really think he and Langford are both 3-4 DEs.

Early in his career he played alot of end in a 4-3 system however it was his performance in 2006 that got him the big extension and that was they year when we used alot of 3-4 in the hybrid system where he lined up at LE

But your statement about playing the media is true many players do it.

Merling doesn't have the burst needed for olb, he'll play with his hand on the ground,or not at all. Unless they are planning on putting him at ilb, he just does not have the speed to play @ lb. I see him at DE, occupying the OT so Porter or Tayor can make plays.

I think this is Hollidays last year, and if he can be pushed off the roster in camp by the younger guys, the trifecta knew what they were doing.

A hybrid is VERY different from a true 3-4 though

Um...both of them will be on the roster this upcoming season. The 3-4 needs good depth. I imagine our DL depth will look something like this, THIS season:

Langford/R. Wright
Ferguson/Starks/Soliai
Holliday/Merling

When watching Merling play, I think he will definetly play with his hands on the ground. Not saying he isn't athletic enough or anything, but his best play is against the run on the ground.

My guess is that Vonnie will be gone. He is a better fit in the 4-3, than 3-4, plus between FA and the draft we have added a ton of youth to our DL. He has been a very servicable player for the past couple seasons. There was even talk about him being a pro-bowler a couple seasons ago. And I thank him for it.

But the youth movement is must for this team. Which is the main reason the previous regimes (Nick Saban, Cam/Mueller) failed. Both came in and tried to "re-tool" rather than rebuild and this set our franchise back minimum 4 years.

I know Vonnie signed a pretty decent sized contract a few seasons ago, and dont know the financial stipulations that would come along with terminating his contract, but if the cap hit isnt an issue he is probably as good as gone.

Rod Wright has intreged me since he was drafted in the 7th round (huge steal)!! At 6-5 315 he has the size this regime craves. But needs to put on weight to be NT and may not have the foot work to play end in our system. I know his natural position is DT in the 4-3. But he is young and huge so my guess is he survives the roster cuts.

Why isnt Lionel Dotson in this conversation? he'll compete for time as well, i envision him and Rod Wright as the DE's of the future. Merling i think is going to be an OLB because he's too small to play end in the 34, thought maybe he'll be used as a flex guy kind of like Taylor. Langford, i just have a feeling is going to do nothing in this league.
