Reshad Jones began 2016 hoping for more money.
He ended the year simply wishing he could play.
Jones, the Dolphins’ Pro Bowl safety, appeared in six games last season after suffering a significant rotator cuff injury in October.
Some three months after surgery, Jones is feeling much better.
“Every time I would see him, he’d tell me how he could play that game, which always kind of hurt me a little bit, because I’m thinking, ‘You’re pretty good. Don’t tell me that,’ ” Adam Gase told reporters Wednesday.
Still, Gase wouldn’t commit to Jones being ready for the start of organized team activities in a few months. But if he doesn’t get a new contract between now and then, Jones might not be there anyway.
What’s unknown: How much Jones’ injury hurt his earning potential, if at all.
But if he was salty over the events of the past year, he kept quiet about it.
“I was so impressed with how he helped lead our guys even though he wasn’t playing,” Gase said. “He stood next to me before every game and he was such a lightning rod for energy for our guys. He tried to help our young players as much as he possibly could. It was great for me to see a guy that it hurt him so bad to not be out there with everybody. But those guys, they felt his positive energy every week on the sideline.”
Gase continued: “He was always out at practice and making sure guys were competing and giving it everything they had. Guys respect him so much. He’s such a good player. Seeing him develop as a leader, that was something that was very impressive to see a guy from … It could have been rocky for him and myself and neither one of us let that happen. We put that spring aside and we developed a great relationship. He has been a guy that I’ve really enjoyed being around this season.”

Reshad Jones is my favorite dolphins player, hes gonba change the defense so much next year when hes back. If be doesnt retire a fin I will write a scathing letter to Ross.

I'd let him play out his contract. He makes plenty. A raise after a trip to the IR seems counter productive.

Landry is the one I'd be talking to. That contract isn't going to get any cheaper. Learn from vernon.

Landry will get locked up.

We made the playoffs without him. That hurts Reshad's leverage. I say let it play out and deal with it when his contract is up

This isn't a good point. We made the playoffs, and got blasted in the last two games we played against real teams, because our defense was target practice. And if you pull up film on Rambo, that could only increase Jones's leverage.

Well, I guess this will show if Ross is legit or full of hot air. He was told by Ross he would be taken care of. I truly hope Ross is a man of his word. We need the intensity and swagger Jones and Landry bring to this roster. I am ready for many more Pick 6 backflips from him for years to come.

Bingo.

Still a lot of free agency and a draft that could affect his leverage. The good news is we have him for this upcoming year. I'd be good seeing if the Fins could extend him for a reasonable price, but let's see where Landry & Stills land first.

Wow. Don't fool yourself

I assume Ross told him this too, but not sure I ever heard it reported. Still I think it's a situation where we should take care of him. It's a tough spot, on one hand he's coming back from injury, on the other hand got injured playing out his contract in good faith.

It's either do the right thing and take a big risk, or do the smart thing and reneg on promises that were likely made.
