Looking at several teams this year compared to last year, I've come to the conclusion that making decisions based on year to year play and results may not be the best way to build a consistently winning organization. There are several teams that were not good last year an are pretty good this year (so far)

1. Jags 3-13 last year 7-4 this year
2. Eagles 7-9 last year - 10-1 this year
3. Vikings Vikings 8-8 last year 9-2 this year
4. Saints 7-9 last year - 8-3 this year
5. Rams 4-12 last year - 8-3 this year
6. Panthers 6-10 Last year 8-3 this year

Or were good last year and not very good this year (So far)

1. Cowboys -13-3 last year to 5-6 this year
2. Giants 11-5 last year to 2-9 this year
3. Raiders - 11-5 to 5-6
4. Dolphins 10-6 last year to 4-7 This year
5. Broncos - 9-7 last year 3-8 this year

What this suggests (at least to me) is that much more focus should be applied to SELF SCOUTING as opposed to looking at wins and losses to determine what moves to make. This makes upper management's job extremely difficult because they are tasked with identifying what changes need to be made.

1. Are we not winning because the players are bad? Slow, weak, lack of work ethic, lack of talent etc...

2. Are we not winning because the coaches are bad? Poor schemes, poor practices, poor player management etc..

And this is probably the most difficult to decipher ..... Do the players look bad because the coaching is bad or do the coaches look bad because the players are bad?

Is it possible that The dolphins fell victim to looking at the Results of last season as opposed to really self scouting to determine if they were on the right path.... Yes we won 10 games and made the playoffs, but did that mean we were on the right track from a player talent standpoint. Did Stills, Branch, Kiko, etc... do enough

Last year we beat only ONE team with a winning record and that team was short handed. Once we played them in the playoffs they destroyed us. Then in the off season our FO made bad decision after bad decision. The team was not as good as 10-6 led everyone to believe.

Ozzy rules!!

I agree. Kiko wasn't good in space last year... so they compound that fault by moving him outside and putting him in MORE SPACE. Our Oline wasn't good and we thought that a couple of low key signings and moving Tunsil outside would fix that problem. Well no one took into account that it might take Tunsil a while to adjust to being an NFL Left Tackle or the fact that the interior lineman might not be good or stay healthy.

They thought Misi would recover... that didn't happen. They thought Timmons would be a major upgrade that hasn't happened. They tried to make Wake a situational pass rusher last year only to abandon that project once they realized the defense was terrible with him on the sidelines. Only to try the same thing this year with the same results. I can go on and on.

Teams that are bad this year (Miami) will have an easier schedule next year. Like last year with our favorite team. Had a poor year the year before and an easy schedule the year after (last year) and "WOW" they looked good! well no they didn't, actually. Cause this year they have a difficult schedule because of last years success and, BLAMMO... they suck.

The only way to fix a team is to allow for GM/Coach consistency and hope to the universe they find a QB.

We fell victim to looking at the results of last season for sure, we were really not a good football team last season and overachieved to a certain extent, not to mention a few lucky plays our way and viola 10 and 6. But this season has shown what we really have player wise not to mention injuries and so on which has made the coaching look bad IMO. We need a better way of scouting or better yet identifying talent that suits our theme what ever the hell that is now a days. When we talk about coaching, "Player friendly coaching" is another thing (term) that annoys me, looking at how Gase interacts with his players it's almost like a buddy system compared to JJ whose players respected him and feared him all at the same time. You talk to Michael Irvin, Emmit Smith, Troy Aikman, Zach Thomas and former players who played under him, it was known that you better play hard or you were gone, that goes for Bill Parcells and other coaches....I guess I went a little off topic but you get my drift.

Building block #1: when in the Top10 draft the next QB!!! that means Baker Mayfield.. even if you need to move up 3-5 spots to get him. do it!

I can't believe there's not been any Mr. T or Murdock jokes yet, given the thread title. Maybe I'm the only one with a weird sense of humor.

Ross needs to sell the team to an owner who has balls!

Mike Tannebaum MUST be fired. I would do it in a way that would humiliate that ****!

Gase needs to be on the hot seat! Be told that playoffs next year or he gets the Tannebaum treatment.

If you have a big season out of nowhere it's imperative to take full advantage of it. Otherwise you're more likely to slip back toward the pack the following season. I'm forever astonished that isn't accepted as logical.

The teams that are surging this season have a commonality in that they drafted a quarterback within the first handful of picks in that respective draft, or own a long time great quarterback. Minnesota would be the only exception. Granted, Bortles isn't exactly paramount in the Jaguars' uptick. A truly premier quarterback is always the best fix. You can overcome one flaw after another for a decade or more. No adjustments necessary.

I thought Denver was logical for a forward bounce this season. That team is the biggest surprise to me. I think it would have happened it they found a top tier coach and/or quarterback. Wasting lots of talent on that team.

Denver picked the wrong QB to succeed Manning. Not surprised at all given Elway did not have real success until he allowed himself to be coached and stopped acting like a little b#$%.

Last year the Dolphin won and should have been closer to a 6-10 or 8-8 however with some dumb luck, easy schedule and Jay power running the Dolphins finished 10-6 and a playoff appearance.

Enter this year and despite losing Tannyhill, Gase throws away his power running game and instead tries to becomes a passing team like some sort of a bastardized Air Raid team featuring lots of screens.

Can't forgot dumping a decent but unspectacular TE in Dion Sims for his guy in the craptastic J Thomas. If your a Gase guy, you can suck and still get a paycheck.

Ugh
