Can someone please explain picking up the option that comes up after the season? What exactly does it mean?

If we don't do anything with Tannehill's contract this year, what happens?

My understanding is this offseason we have the option to extend his contract to a fifth year for $15 million. If we don't pick it up we either lose him after next season or sign him to a new contract in a league where even the inconsistent Andy Dalton signs a Kajillion dollar contract.

My understanding is that they have until May 15 to exercise the option. The price is the equivalent of the transition tag which this year was 14.6 mil. If they don't he will be considered a free agent after next season.

And 14.6 is a bargain in the NFL for a solid starting QB.

If they don't pick it up, they can still use the franchise tag for year 5 I believe, which wouldn't be a bad idea if they were still on the fence after year 4

Unless they work out a long term extension. The $15 million would be a good bargain compared to giving him a $100 million extension though so that option seems pretty unlikely.

I don't know much about NFL contract rules, but it would seem that if the Dolphins are fairly sold on Tannehill after this year, they would be better to tie him up long term at a more reasonable rate while he is still maybe not the proven franchise player. Injury is less of a risk with RT given his big frame and proven durability to date.

If they wait, and RT keeps progressing at the same rate he has, then after next season they are probably going to have to make him an offer that would pay him Top 5 QB money just to keep him.

1-10 = Deal equal to the league's transition tag number.
11-32 = Average salary of players ranked 3rd-25th in salary for that position.

I think they are much better off negotiating a long term contract with him than exercising a 1 year deal for almost $15 million. So I'll say no on the 1 year option, but only because I think he will get a 5 year deal or so.

They will pick it up that's a no brainer if he keeps up this play

I think they should push for a long term contract for about $10-12 mil a year. Paying QB's $15-20 mil a year causes the weapons and protection around you to be weakened. It is high time these overpaid QB's realize this!

Tannehill's cap hit is $3.5M this year, and $4M next year. The team has until May 3 to exercise the 5th year option. The transition tag for QB's this year is $13M, and $15M for next year is fair. The option is not guaranteed, other than by injury, until the player is on the opening day roster of the option year.

The team would have all of next year, barring injury, to decide on keeping the option, a new contract, or walking away. No reason to not exercise it. A new contract after this year could be questionable until we know who will be running the team. A new HC may want to go a different way.
