What's the deal with Tannehill's contract?

Can someone please explain picking up the option that comes up after the season? What exactly does it mean?

If we don't do anything with Tannehill's contract this year, what happens?

I believe the deadline to pick up his option is this off season. But he still has year 4 to go.

A lot of people calling for his 'franchise' QB deal this early is irrelevant.

No doubt Fins pick up his 5th year

Tannehill is better than 99% of the QBs we've had around here over the past 10 yrs. Just pick up the option, then negotiate a long term deal.

At the same time, keep drafting QB's.. because you never know. Any player is one play away from an injury induced retirement.

Tannehill's cap hit is $3.5M this year, and $4M next year. The team has until May 3 to exercise the 5th year option. The transition tag for QB's this year is $13M, and $15M for next year is fair. The option is not guaranteed, other than by injury, until the player is on the opening day roster of the option year.

The team would have all of next year, barring injury, to decide on keeping the option, a new contract, or walking away. No reason to not exercise it. A new contract after this year could be questionable until we know who will be running the team. A new HC may want to go a different way.

If Tannehill remains a Fin (HC change or whatever), I feel the 5th year option pick up will be a 'hold-me-over' until his franchise deal (Andy Dalton numbers) is worked out.

I don't see Tannehill camp allowing him to play on basically a franchise tag even if at $15.

My inclination would be to try to negotiate a longer term contract. His agent knows market rates, the challenge is to find an equivalent player of comparable ability. I actually think Tannehill is better than Andy Dalton, but it also sounds like the Bengals overpaid him. Which other player with a little more experience is equivalent to RT?

I don't know much about NFL contract rules, but it would seem that if the Dolphins are fairly sold on Tannehill after this year, they would be better to tie him up long term at a more reasonable rate while he is still maybe not the proven franchise player. Injury is less of a risk with RT given his big frame and proven durability to date.

If they wait, and RT keeps progressing at the same rate he has, then after next season they are probably going to have to make him an offer that would pay him Top 5 QB money just to keep him.

Yeah, if he proves to be solid to good in these next 6 games you would be wise to sign him to that last Aaron Rodgers contract that he outperformed before getting his most recent extension.

Not sure about comparing the two.

But Tannehill camp will use Andy Dalton deal as the measuring stick. (6, $96, $17 Guaranteed, about $16 per year)

The guaranteed will be much larger maye close to $30 since his 5th year option alone is $15 guaranteed.

Maybe they wait to see what Luck is getting as well.

Anything is possible but, the NFL has the options as non-negotiable, with heavy fines on any hold out. I do not have the numbers but, have read where any hold out is highly unlikely.

I am hoping the structure how the Niners structured Kap, both sides win in a team friendly deal.

Change 99% to 100%. He IS better than 100% of the QB we've had here since the year 2000.

Andrew Luck will undoubtedly become the highest paid player ever in the NFL in the next year. Similar to how the Colts "sucked for Luck", they're now going to be "f--ked for Luck" once he gets $25 million/year.

Tannehill is going to get paid no doubt at least 100 million dollars, Book it. Andrew Luck on the colts makes me mad every time I see them, I understand if they were bad on purpose but it really did appear they threw games later on to ensure they got Andrew Luck.. They weren't good without manning but they were not close to having the worst roster in the NFL with Freeny and Mathis, Reggie Wayne etc..

I hope the colts never win a superbowl with andrew luck, With how prone Luck is to making bad decisions and trying to be a gunslinger i don't think that should be a problem.

Stranger things have happened but I don't see Luck breaking Rodgers contract of $22 per year. (5 Year / $110 / $54 Guaranteed)

No way Luck agent swindles the Colts for more money than a Super Bowl MVP QB.
