To me its the nose tackle. He controls the line takes up to and clears the way for the linebacker to make plays.

So what position do you think plays the key role in running a 3-4 defense?

It's the Nose Tackle. Without a stout NT, your defense is basically a sieve. That's why aquiring Jason Ferguson was so important.

I mean the only other position i can think of is that hybrid linebacker that is the pass rusher.

NT with out a doubt, he has to be able to be a two gapper, probably the must rated position on the team

defiantly the NT. without him, teams could easily run inside all game and probably never throw a pass and still win.

Actually the NT is not the most important position. The D-line overall is the most important. the browns have rodgers who play well but their DE's completely blow.

i understand where ur coming from here,i really do,but i have to agree with everyone else who said NT...a good NT can take on 2 maybe 3 blockers, thereby helping to free up our LBs to go make plays....

NT...In a 3-4 you do not have as many LBs at the second level, so if they can run on you, they can be for larger gains on average. So, stopping the run is very important, but most important that the run up the middle be stopped because the OLB have a harder time providing additional support for a run over the G/C gap as compared to the G/T gap...hard for them to crash from the ends if needed and get there on time.
