ok guys so I wasn't exactly around for the '72 season, I mean as a dolphin fan I definitely boast it over other teams. However, the fact that I am so far removed from it (im 25, born in 84 for those that'd struggle with that) I really wouldn't root for the record to hold if it meant keeping the dolphins out of more recent success. Its because of this, and the fact that I've seen so many opinions on it recently I'd like to know what level of importance people place on it, as well as how close they were to the actual record being secured. (a person whose been a fan since the 60's will probably appreciate it more so than someone whose been a fan since the 80's- or maybe you became a fan in the 90's and you still think its the best thing ever)

for me ive been a fan for 25 years (born and bred) but id give the record up for a wild card spot, for the jests or patsies to go a whole season without a win, or possibly something similar.

lets see where everyone is at.

it's funny...the phins are the only team to go undefeated throughout the the whole year and are still not ranked very high as far as greatest teams. The '85 bears ( I know, you were 1 year old at the time) always seems to be rated above the phins. They lost one game...to us on a Monday night. If you get a chance, watch that game and you may see why us old foggies still like the record.

Tha Pats? Besides the phins winning 2, the third best SB of all time goes to the Giants over the Pats!

If we sneak in to the playoffs and loose, it's not worth giving up the undefeated season.

fair enough, it might be a bit of a shame if we got dropped in the first round.... though i think I'd still take the shot...

OK...I'm with you on this one. I obviously want the team to make the playoffs, but I get tired (yes, I'm much older than you :chuckle:) of seeing the Phins make the playoffs when you KNOW they are going out in the first round...maybe the second if we are lucky. I really like what the org is doing now and building a team to compete for a championship, not just the playoffs, down the road.

Please don't take this as an insult or anything like that...but just making the playoffs is not good enough...in my mind.

...by the way, I have the '85 Bears vs. Dolphins game on VHS (you may want to check Wikipedia for what VHS is ) if you would like to see it as some point...

I was 6 years old when the Phins went undefeated in 1972 so I didn't really appreciate it. I started watching and following Miami the year before when they lost the Superbowl to the Cowboys. I couldn't imagine it would be 35+ years later and we haven't won any SB's since the two we won back to back. I feel proud the Phins have this 17-0 Perfect Record, but I don't live in the past....I just would like us to win another SB and I don't want to wait another 35 years.

Good point...chances are we are not going to win this year...so I would like to hold on to the record for one more year...

I like our chances next year and the years coming up....I think the Patriots are starting to go downhill....they have lost most of the guys from their Superbowl Dynasty on defense, but they still have Brady on offense, but I think we can take them. Henne is getting better and if we can add a nice WR or two and some talent on D, we should be good for years to come.

Hey, Roman...I'm not giving you a hard time but I did want to bring up a couple of facts that get lost over time. I guess the first dynasty was GB since they won the first two SBs. The Fins were the first team to go to 3 straight...and after their third, three of their best players left for a start-up league...the World Football League. If Czonka, Kiick and Warfield would have stayed...how may SBs would the Phins have won? The year after the three left, the phins barely lost to the Raiders on a last minute play in the playoff and then the Steelers took over as the best team of the 70's. I think we would have won at least 4 SBs in the 70s if those guys stayed. I know tht was 30 years ago and everything happens for a reason...but Shula had the makings of the best Dynasty of all time.

Yes unfortunately the WFL came along and they offered big contracts to Kiick, Csonka, Warfield and others and it broke the team apart. The WFL folded really quickly and I remember Kiick played here for the Broncos.

I cried my eyes out when the Raiders got lucky to beat us in the Sea of Hands game. I have watched replays of this game several times and it is just sickening how we lost.....Stabler was falling down and he flung the ball in the air and 99 times out of 100 it would have been incomplete/batted down/or intercepted.

I don't know if the Steeler's Dynasty would ever have happened in the 70's had the Dolphins stayed intact, but I guess you can always argue and speculate about that. We did beat the Steelers in the '72 AFC Championship Game. The Steelers made fantastic draft picks after this and kept their team together. I just am happy I can remember when we won it.....hopefully we can do it again soon.

Amen...brother! Not to be a pain, but I want people to realize that the '72 playoff game against the Steelers was in Pittsbugh...best record did not matter then! ...and we still won.

I believe we will win again within 5 years...probably 3.

I just turned 45 Dec 12th. My decade was the 70's with My Dolphins winning 2 / 3 Superbowls, one being perfect, The Big Red Machine winning back to back World Series, the Hurryin Hoosiers going perfect winning the National Championship under Bob Knight, and the Bird leading the Celts to two NBA Championships.
I am still passionate today about all my teams, but no team comes close to my passion for the Dolphins. I get upset when I see posters respond with give it up, or who cares. But reflecting that it happen almost 40 years ago, would be like if I was 25 again and the perfect season had taken place back in the late 1940s or early 50's. I would be as proud but since I did not live it as it happened, it makes sense why the passion is obviously much deeper for us who actually can say, Hey I was around and I actually watched that game with Shula being hoisted up on the players shoulders.
Michael Irvin HOF Cowboys receiver, said it best on the NFL Network I believe. He would give up his 3 superbowl rings and his HOF for just one perfect Super Bowl Season.
I wonder how many NFL fans can name the Superbowl Winners from the past 40 years and how many can name the only Undefeated NFL Super Bowl Champion in the History of the NFL.
Probably the closest thing I can think of trading for the Undefeated Season would be a ring for Danny Marino. But if it came down to it, I would keep the Undefeated Season of 72. Thats what it means to me...

About the only thing I'd trade the perfect season for would be a Super Bowl for Marino.

I completely agree. I always think of how, in the 80-year history of the NFL, it has only happened to one team, one time. the '85 Bears, the '70s Steelers, '80s 49ers and 90s Cowboys all were incredible teams and didn't do it (and those are just the recent examples.) imo, there is no greater accomplishment by any team and every Dolphin fan should wave that flag.
however, if another team is good enough to repeat it then more power to them. the team that does it will have to be special and when it happens you'll hear more about the '72 Dolphins than ever. it's nice having it all to ourselves for now, but I'm not selfish about it.
also, Bird wasn't part of the 70s Celtics, he lost to Magic in the 1979 NCAA championship game.

I'm 28 and wasn't around for the greatest season ever either. In no way does that mean I don't appreciate it or feel it's importance. My family is from Miami and a lot of them still reside there. Our family reunions often encompass Dolkphin games. I married my highschool sweetheart who's family happened to be season ticket holders. We would drive down from Ocala to the games, as we still do.

When the Giants beat the Pats to preserve the '72 Dolphins accomplishment my great grandmother called me with tears of joy yelling "We still have! It still belongs to Shula and the boys!" Followed up by other relatives who lived that season. We celebrated that night as if in someway the '72 Dolphins had won it again. I have yet to experience a Miami Super Bowl win but I can only imagine how great it would feel. Having something that nobody else has is priceless. Appreciate that gift and never let it go unless you absolutley have to.
