I never said Bell was the Bell of yesteryear. What I said is, the team has too many holes to fill and worrying about Strong Safety when there is a glaring weakness at Free Safety and DE/OLB, it is stupid when you have what you need on the team for a short term fix on the roster. Restructure Bell to a 2 year deal and worry about Strong Safety upgrade next offseason. Free Safety will improve the pass coverage underneath tremendously and the roll of strong is mainly run support anyway.
The roster is full of **** at the safety position, Jones will more than likely be better at Strong Safety but you can not bank on that fact and Bell gives you room to experiment for a year. The need for a Free Safety and Pass Rusher opposite Wake is much much greater then SS, I would even put LB ahead of SS right now in terms of need. Now if you don't re-up Bell and move Jones than it becomes FS, Pass Rusher, SS, OLB.
This is a problem that should have been addressed last season but wasn't, FS last seasons with this year if you needed an extra year, you could of addressed SS this off season and moved on from an aging Bell and the garbage behind him. Unfortunately they sat on their collective ***** last offseason and didn't fill the need at FS and now they are forced to do it this year. Creating a need at SS with a need for a FS is a recipe for disaster if you miss on both needs in the off season.
I don't care if Bell's best days are behind him, it is still a better situation than going after a new FS and SS in the same year. Last year when I was pushing for an upgrade at FS this board was stating "Jones, Culver etc..." next great thing crap.
