Good read

To me the one key advantage of bringing in a big name head coach like Cowher is that it would definitely mean the end for Ireland and we can't go forward until that happens. Apart from that it doesn't seem from looking around the NFL that big name hires do better than lesser knowns. Here in Miami it might look like lesser knowns have failed of late but I think that's as much to do with who's running the show, who's hiring and who's in charge of personnel. Get the right GM and the right structure at the top and your new HC has a chance

Trouble is I'm not confident that Ross can see through the slimey self promotion of his current GM. Ireland will obviously be touting an Ireland + less known HC combo. The crowd pleasing alternative for Ross is the Cowher-type appointment with Cowher getting his own personnel guy. Unfortunately I don't think Ross is even going to consider replacing Ireland with a new GM and going from there

It's hit and miss and the Dolphins have missed a lot since Shula left and the biggest problem is the fans do not have the patience for the next Mike McCarthy. Will Ross put his ego aside to avoid the flashy big name hire?

All of these guys have failed to get us a QB. Sure Parcells and Cam Tried with 2nd rounders.. But in the end they have both failed...Get a gm in here who is going to get us a qb at any cost.

Son of a ----! I didn't need to read that. To know we could have had Ted Thompson and probably have Aaron Rodgers right now really just ticks me off. The fans can't blame Huizenga, he did what they wanted and hired big name people, known people. Just like most of you are asking for now and because of it we missed out on two very good GMs in Ted Thompson and Jerry Reese...I feel sick...we could be at the top of the division, possibly the freakin league right now had we hired Thompson in 2004....thanks for that crap!

Have you looked back at the 2007 draft? There wasn't a QB in that draft worth taking. I didn't want Brady Quinn and I sure as heck didn't want Ted Ginn. I've said this a million times, I wanted Darrelle Revis as my first choice. We needed cornerback help bad and we needed a return man and Revis did both at Pitt. My second choice was Pat Willis who would have made a heck of an inside combo with Zach Thomas in the 3-4 we were running.

And I know everyone is going to say I'm full of crap because I'm saying it now but I posted that on another board a long, long time ago.

Will the fans?

The fans just *love* the big name hire. It brings tingly little feelings all over. It doesn't guarantee crap, and it's also less likely to succeed given past history. But hey, it placates the fans for a while.

The truth is, fans simply have no patience and owners pander to what the media tells them. No regime will ever succeed like that. Green Bay, Pittsburgh, Indy, New England - they've had *years* to put together the teams they have now, even before the current regimes in some cases. There's a continuity that's been missing here since Shula, and it will *never* return with these kind of fans.

I really enjoy Ethan´s columns, to bad he is now covering the Heat but in his words: "I don't mind covering football. Just always more fun to cover a team that has a chance."

great read and i totally agree. but we all know ross will try to make a splash. ross doesnt care about the future of this great franchise, he only cares about the money he makes now. i think we need a hungry coach that is just waiting for his chance. rob ryan, the o coordinator from no, or carolina, or the d coordinator from the nyg. im excited to see what happens, but also scared ****less bc of ross

Of the big names Cowher is the only one I would want. He likes running a 3-4 so he can probably scoop up some of his old Defensive cronies from Pitt days and bring them down and add some toughness to our group. On Offense he has had some quality guys in Pitt and has tons of options to choose from if he comes back to us especially if we have a high pick and get a new QB. I think the biggest thing Cowher learned near the end and winning a superbowl was a QB is needed. He had great teams for years and never could put it together until Big Ben showed up. I think he knows that if he takes over a new team that they will have to have a competent QB now or draft one. The only question I have about him is did he ever have or share GM duties. I didn't think he did in Pitt which then puts me at odds with him wanting total control of the personel men he brings in. maybe someone knows this answer better than me.

Huizenga chose Spielman over Ted Thompson? Ugh I feel sick. Being a Dolphins fan is vomit inducing. I thought Cam Cameron over Mike Tomlin was bad. There has to be an alternate reality somewhere where Thompson, Tomlin, and Brees are leading us to multiple chips.

That was a very well written article, btw. I'd forgotten that Ethan has such quality chops. I really should stop going anywhere near the sun sentinel.

The good news, IMO, is that we will actually be in good shape to attract the HC and GM that we want, not that I necessarily have any faith in Ross choosing the right ones. I do believe that both need to change, regardless of what you feel about Ireland's track record. There just needs to be a major culture change at the top and some feeling of hope.

That said, the new regime will inherit a much better situation than this one did. (Remember the absolute lack of talent on this team when they arrived). The new guys will have a solid young core on defense, with a deep defensive line, an average LB corps with an olb that we know can be a beast pass rusher (Wake), and theoretically a top ilb (Dansby).A young secondary with potential, although they will be in the market for a safety or two.

On offense, it is tailor made for a new regime to come in. A new regime will sink or swim with the qb they hitch their wagon to, so I'm sure they will use our 1st round pick (probably a high one!) on their best bet for a franchise qb (Luck, etc). But, they will put that qb on an offense that has:
-a perrenial probowl LT and a promising young top tier center, the 2 most important o-line positions
- a solid reciving corps with a top slot receiver (Bess), a solid workman wr(Hartline), a speedster (Gates), and an elite beast receiver - (I believe with the right qb and right attitude, Marshall can be dominant)
- A good looking rookie RB who can run between the tackles
-a change of pace elusive runner if used properly (Bush)

If they choose to keep either/or, a decent young OC and a veteran DC with a proven track record

They need to draft their QB, get a TE and some safety help, and they're in immediate running, if they can change the culture and attitude of this team.
Other teams looking for a new HC are typically in much worse shape, with a lot of older, past-their-prime veterans that the last regime tried as a last ditch effort to save their jobs. Believe it or not, this could be an attractive job compared to what will be out there.

The next regime really will have more young talent than any new regime since Wanny was handed a team brimming with top tier talent. I think Ireland/Parcells have made huge, franchise killing mistakes and have done a terrible job building a team, BUT they have infused this team with more young talent than Saban or Cam by a long shot.

Weve been some of the most patient fans in the NFL what with being one of the worst teams in the league the last decade, maybe even worse 5 teams. That is correct, worst 5 being we've had 3 top 9 picks in a 7 year span and 2 top 2 picks only 4 years apart. We've been right there with the Lions, Bengals, Browns, Bills, etc... Patience is up. Its time for results and quick ones at that. Its time to hire someone who can make good decisions and get it right for the long haul. Its time for an owner to make the right decision and not the wrong one. Us fans have been patient for more than 10 years. My patience is gone and its time to reward us for being so faithful for so long and getting really nothing in return

Says a newspaper columnist who's idea of leadership is something that you read
about in a book. skolnick_au_563695k.jpg

Yeah, that's the guy I want telling me about who I need to hire if I'm the owner.
