Simple stat. Giving up a TD on the opponent's first drive of the game is setting the tempo for the rest of the game and affecting our offense's playcalling.

It's as simple as the stat. We're 0-4 when we let the opponent score a TD on their first drive. We're 2-0 when we don't. One of those two wins, the close one against the Panthers, we held them to a field goal.

The defense needs to play better right out of the box.

Very nice stat. Heres hoping we keep the saints out early on Sunday. :)

True, but you also have to be prepared to come from behind. Just because you are down by 7 in the 1st qtr does not mean you have to start a passing frenzy.

I agree with Superself. Its a very nice stat. But down 7-0 in the first quarter does should not trigger different playcalling on offense. I think down 7-0 or not we would have called the same plays. But I know what you mean that it sets a tone. Well Our offense needs to be able to overcome that if need be. That is a sign of a good team.

It appears our defense takes time to get into games, it happens that over the last several weeks they have YET to get into games. I wish we could force a turnover right off the bat and REALLY swing momentum, but it doesn't appear we are able. Certainly we need to halt game opening TD drives, but if we were able to get stops on 3rd down and not get dumb penalties, we would!

That is true being down 7-0 is nothing to panic about, escpially in the fitse Quarter the team just need to keep cool, the coaches, need to do their job and the playmakers must step up.

I'll give you another one which was mentioned by Byroan prior to our game against the Bucs. In 3 of our 4 losses, we've had a penalty on our first play defensively.
I remember having that stat in hand against Tampa (at the time we had started that way against the Jets and the Bills) and low and behold, first play we draw a flag. I almost turned off the TV right there. An omen. Turns our we lose that one and the flag on the first play showed up in every one of our losses.

You're right CK, they are scoring early way more than they should and that's put us behind the 8 ball which is extremely hard to overcome if you're playing on the road, and get away from the run as we have trying to play catch-up.

On the other hand, we've been fairly solid in the 3rd quarter. We were as putrid last year in the 3rd quarter (when we were outscored in the range of 63-3).

Another simple stat...

When I sit on the left side of my couch we are 0-4, when I sit on the rightside of my couch we are 2-0, when I sit in the center of my couch my wife shows up in a sexy negligee and I dont care what our record is...

I think that stat is very telling, not in that we can't come back from the 7-0 deficit, but I think it is indicative of our team intensity. Each game we have given up a quick 7 to the other team we have come out flat on both sides of the football, and ultimately we lose because of that. Only in the Buffalo game did we manage to shake off the cobwebs, but even then it took us the whole first half.

Get your butt on the right side! Then after we win move to the middle.

The #1 thing I hate: playing catch up. We don't have a good enough offense [QB] to do that.

That's definitely an interesting stat. The opening drive sets the tone for the game. Allowing the other team to score, lets them know that they will be able to move the ball against our defence. We're also not at team built to come from behind at this point. We get away from our running game because we are playing catch up all day.

I've been thinking about this. It all comes down to the coin toss  We just can't stop the other teams first drive for some reason. I don't think we have stopped an opening drive yet.
