It’s called off-set language and works like this. If the Dolphins decide to Tannehill in the fourth year of the contract, the Dolphins would have to pay him the remaining balance on his deal. If Tannehill signs with another team, the Dolphins would either be on the hook for the difference between the two deals or off the hook if Tannehill’s new deal is equal to or more than the money owed by the Dolphins. Without that language in the contract they are negotiating now, Tannehill would be paid what the Dolphins owed him plus what the other team gives him. In other words he is getting paid twice.
The Dolphins chief salary cap officer is named Dawn Aponte who worked in the NFL’s league offices and she has repeatedly encouraged teams not to give in on the issue. Backing down now could be viewed as a weakness but would definitely be something the team could not go back on with future first round picks. Once they put out there they are willing to back off the demand, there is no turning around.
For now, the language of a deal is not what fans are concerned about. Instead, they wonder how the Dolphins can allow their future QB to stand in the parking lot instead of on the field. At first glance it’s easy to believe that the Dolphins are doing more harm than good to the team. The question here really is this. Was Ryan Tannehill ever a legit contender for the starting QB position? Likely not.

ha ha...awful...this aponte broad telling teams to stand firm...what a joke...holy cow...

Jeff Darlington just reported that the "holdout" will not linger and there is no reason to worry about an extended adsense. Sounds like this gets done before the end of the weekend. So he might miss two, at the most three practices. Or perhaps he still even signs tonight and only would have missed today. Granted it would have been better to have him here today, but nothing to really fret about.

A question regarding the off-set language:
Assume RT's contract is guarenteed with the offset language in place. The Dolphins cut him after three years and nobody picks him up at all because he is such a disaster. Will the Dolphins still have to pay him the fourth and final year of his contract?

If the fourth and final year is still guarenteed to be payed in full (whether by Miami or someone else in combination) to RT, what would it matter of the off-set language is in place? Am I missing something?

if that's the case it probably means we are giving in...tucking our tails...if tanny has to it's just sad...really is...i can only imagine what his convos with his agent are going like right about now...chomping at the bit to gett into camp and join his teammates and sitting out on this straight up garbage...

Actually what he said was talks are heading in the right direction and in his opinion it won't be a long holdout. Encouraging but not definitive.

We know he's not going to start this season, but he should still be in camp. This should probably be over by the end of this weekend.

we don't know anything...david garrard may throw his back out again picking up his 2 year old matt moore might be terrible in this o treating the ball like a hot potato we need this kid in camp yesterday...

he might be playing by week 6 thru default...you just never know...the only thing i do know is he's missing important install and a chance to compete right now...getting behind the 8 ball from the jump

I think they are purposefully stalling so he misses a little bit of camp. That then reduces the pressure on them to play him too soon, gives them an excuse if he doesn't immediately look competitive with Moore and Garrard, and gives him some space to learn and adjust. I don't think it will be too long, but long enough to give them a viable excuse for not really considering him in contention for starting Day 1.

If you believe the AM Jeff Darlington, he won't be in camp any time soon. If you believe PM Jeff Darlington, he'll be in camp shortly. ;)
