In this day and age, it’s an almost impossible task to prevent players from talking. We’ve seen guys like Ryan Clark call us out on twitter, Channing Crowder has gone on radio shows bashing Jeff Ireland and just about every media outlet has a quote from someone calling out our front office. It seems like just about every other day a pro athlete puts himself in hot water for a boneheaded comment on Twitter.
What has astonished me more than anything in the last couple of days is that not one of our so called leaders both on and off the field has stepped up to Jeff Ireland’s defence. Not one.
That says one of two things to me:
1. Jeff Ireland really is a dink
2. We have no leader on this team. Not on or off the field.
I’d argue that both of these are probably true. You have to wonder though, where is Jake Long in all of this? Jeff Ireland drafted you and extended you. What about Karlos Dansby? Jeff Ireland handed you millions of dollars to show up to camp last year overweight. I always try to imagine what Zach Thomas would do in this type of situation. There’s no doubt in my mind that Zach would have said something publicly by now trying to take the heat off our team.
