I am not understanding the whole Jake Long can't be a left tackle argument! He played left tackle at Michigan not at Bucktustle State!!! He didn't just have a good combine he played really well in actual "football games"! So where are you guys getting the idea of him not being able to play left tackle in the NFL? If you won't someone else as the first pick I can understand that but if he cannot play left tackle in the leauge give me reasons why and specific instances of failure at the college level. Oh and by the way God forbid him being a 12 year starter at right tackle and going to 8 pro bowls because of some "book" that says you should only draft certain positions at certain spots in the draft!!!

i agree . Jake Long all the way baby.. We haven't been a playoff team since we had a good O-line.. All those great defenses we had meant nothing.. All it led to was watching other teams play in the playoffs..

Jake Long has to be the pick.. It makes the most sense.

Truth is most people who talk about the draft , me included, don't watch a lot of college football and if they do they aren't going to see a p[rospects entire career week to week.

If you hear "Jake Long may lack the footwork to be an elite Left Tackle" or "Vernon Ghoulston takes plays off" from someone like Mike Nayock or read it on NFLdraftcountdown it gets repeated and regurgetated until it becomes fact.

The truth is, basically nobody can play Left Tackle to this mythical level in the NFL, you just do the best you can to keep your QB upright, the position is just too hard to be perfect on 60 snaps a game.

The thing with Long is that he allowed just 2 sacks in 4 years at Michigan. And he is one of 4 players ever to be named Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year multiple times. I don't know that I buy this thing about him not being able to play LT in the NFL.

Fact of the matter is... it's a crap shoot.... always will be.... every fan wants a sure thing.... ain't going to happen.

IMO... sit back and relax... and watch Parcells and company build a team over time... dial down the specific drafted player expectations.... and just take in the fact that our player selections are being made by people who have long history of success...

I'd be shocked if it isn't JL with the #1 pick... but who the hell knows...

jake long is as good a candidate to play LT as there is in this draft. if you look at the past 5 drafts he is arguably #1 or #2. And don't say Joe Thomas this and that, before the draft people were bringing him down too.

Past 5 drafts: best T prospects (no particular order)

Jordan Gross '03 (plays RT)
Jamaal Brown '05 (played RT for a while)
Alex Barron '05 (played RT for a while)
D'Brickashaw Ferguson '06
Marcus McNeill '06 (plays RT)
Joe Thomas '07
Levi Brown '07
Joe Staley '07
Tony Ugoh '07

In the last FIVE YEARS, there have been 2 TRUE LT's to come out and play at a decent level (3 if you include Ugoh). In fact, we should be happy Carey has played as decently as he has.

Face it, LT's or just plain T's are a difficult a find as any position in football. Period. Just freakin draft Jake and be done with it.

You can get a linebacker any year at any point in the draft. Look how many LB's we signed just this past free agency period. Then look at the Tackle market. No comparison.

Who cares if he plays RT for a while or even his whole career (he won't, btw). I'd much rather try and find a 6'4", 260 LB over a 6'7", 315 T.

Don't be dumb, Miami. Draft Long.

Don't be dumb, Miami. Draft Long.

Exactly . . . we can't pass this opportunity up . . . these type of LT prospects don't grow on trees. Just draft this beast and move on with the draft. I don't think I have heard ANYBODY say he will be a BUST in this draft . . . and most all agree that he will be ATLEAST an All-Pro RT . . . even tho I think he will be an All-Pro LT for many years . . . . draft this stud with a mean streak.

Ourlads Scouts who are a highly respected group of scouts who have watched Jake Long a zillion times say that Long could be a feature right tackle like Jon Jansen but will struggle on the left side. Also they state that Michigan slides and gap protects so you don't see Jake Long singled up a lot. He always has inside help on the slide and outside help on gap protection. Not as athletic as Joe Thomas. Those types of things concern me.

It's those types of concerns that make me question selecting Long with the #1 overall pick. Especially if he ends up as a right tackle. You simply do NOT spend a #1 overall pick on a guy who is a right tackle. Many scouts feel Ryan Clady will be a much better left tackle in the NFL then Long. And you certainly would not select Clady with the #1 overall pick!!

I find the funniest thing is R.Clady is considered the best pure pass protecting LT in the draft and yet he played for Boise ST. and played against who? What real effective speed rushers did he play against, he's weak in run blocking and yet he's not even questioned about his ability to play LT. Last time I checked most NFL teams run 60% of the time and they usually do it to both sides of the field.

J.Long has played against top flight speed rushers year in and year out and because one of them beat him for his only sack counted against him there's question marks against him. It's some of the dumbest stuff I've ever heard of. Then there's the "he's no J.Thomas" arguement which in itself shows you no one has any real facts to detract from J.Long's ability. J.Thomas is said to have some of the best footwork in the Biz right now, that only tells me that it helps him make up for his shorter arm reach and lack of any real strength. You can flip that to J.Long who has incredible strength and has the reach of a prototypical LT and will give him an advantage to help his foot work (which by the way is as good as any of the LT's in the league right now).

BP make it happen J.Long will be the MAN for us for a very LONG time. A QB's best friend indeed.

Don't knock Bucktustle State, I graduated with honors from BS! . . . Well actually I got kicked out my Freshman year, but we had a hell of a football team!

good point....but what makes everyone think that Chris Long can put on a dolphins uniform and shine at linebacker in a 3-4 defense when he played defensive end at Virginia? Does that concern you?

it comes from hearing so called experts like mayock on t.v state things like that. also stating things like ellis is a nose tackle(did not state that to start a debate on ellis). and things like ryan is the number one pick in the draft period and that we would pick him just because we need a franchise qb...now what is mayock saying?? ryan dropped down to number five and i have a hunch that days before the draft all these so called experts will have totally different boards.

i agree 89% why draft a qb to make him your punter? but just look at carey..he will transition to be a better rt than lt even though we drafted him at lt...or satele being a g and moving him to c. some guys play positions because they are the best at that paticular position. i feel long played lt for michigan because the rt could not beat him out for that spot. you put the best guys on the feild wether it be on the left side or right, offense or defense. if we draft long for lt and in training camp carey does a much better job at lt than long this season that you play carey at lt and long at right.

God forbid Jake becomes a great right tackle. I mean what if we get a left handed quarterback then the so called "wasted pick" for a right tackle becomes a very good pick......but aside from that we need a good offensive line and it starts with jake!!! I don't care if he plays guard if he becomes a pro bowler year after year we need to get him! I heard many of you crying out for us to get give Alan Faneca tons of money....oh yeah he plays guard.....imagine that!!!
