Where is Dion Jordan's Best Fit? Part 1: SAM Linebacker in a 4-3 Under

And being drafted #3 doesn't automatically mean you are any good either...

well the good news is that he is not the only first round pick we have wasted lately. wait that's not good news lol

yeah, no kidding. maybe read the whole post. I said he's not garbage. "at least not yet". I really do have to make sure I post so a 3rd grader can read and comprehend what i'm saying.

Jordan's best fit is flag football or someother sport where he can run around in shorts and look impressive

While I personally did not care for the drafting of him and how he was drafted! I think his best option is playing LB like he played in college! If not I do hope he can contribute at least enough to maybe trade him if he isn't working out for us! Maybe some other team might make a good fit for him and give us some kind of decent pick as compensation! Although if he continues to fail we may end up cutting dead weight if he doesn't perform! So far its not looking so good!

Dion Jordan's outing against Atlanta lowered expectations to such extreme that now he'll likely be praised tomorrow night if he does anything competent at all. One positive mention from the announcing crew will equate to assertions of a great game, or vastly improved effort. We need to make sure he's held to standards of a top pick and not a scrub. Last season Reshad Jones would occasionally make a big hit in an otherwise pathetic performance and it led to claims he was finally coming around.

Dion Sims' frame looked very good last week. Definitely trimmed down and more athletic. We still need to see how it translates. That 16 year old scout was high on Sims and down on Jordan prior to the 2013 draft.

Heading into the draft, I had Jordan rated slightly higher than Mingo as a 3-4 OLB, but if Miami was looking for a DE, they did everything wrong. First, they should have stayed at 12 and drafted Carradine. His rookie year was a wash due to injuries, but he was easily the best 4-3 DE prospect in the draft. SF has asked him to bulk up and play 3-4 DE, and by all accounts, he's progressing well, but he would have been an ideal 4-3 DE. Knowing that Miami can't look that far into the future, the next best DE option would have been Ansah. I was too low on Ansah - too hung up on his rawness. Slimm had it right when he pointed to Ziggy's physical brand and high-end tools. And after Ansah, Mingo translates better to DE than Jordan. Of these guys, Jordan (heading into the draft) was easily the worst DE prospect.

In hindsight, I gave Jordan too much credit for his ability to play in space, and I didn't penalize him enough for being soft, but I still had him as a LB, and I would have only drafted him in the 1st to play LB. As a DE, he's more of a 3rd or 4th RD prospect. The 2014 draft saw Kareem Martin fall to the 3rd RD, and he's a better athlete than Jordan, with better college production, and he's actually built like a 4-3 DE - who the Cardinals are going to bulk up into a 3-4 DE - similar to what SF is doing with Carradine. Even with our depth at DE, I think it was a mistake to pass on Martin for Billy Turner. Martin - imo - should have been a 1st RD pick - 2nd at the latest.

Tank probably would have been the first pick in the draft, the first play maker anyway by a pretty big margin if it weren't for the injury. Taking guys like that are perfect for loaded teams like the 49ers because you can place them on IR effectively increasing your roster, which, imo is a loophole that needs to be fixed. The Bengals are going to get away with doing that with AJ McCarron who I don't think is really injured at all.

Anyway, I can't begrudge Ireland for not taking an injured player when you have so many holes on your roster and you're on the hotseat....oh wait, Jordan was hurt too, wasn't he?

After watching Trent Cole last night I'd call Chip Kelly and see what you can get for Jordan.

Can't see how we can absorb to cap hit this year. All of his $20M contract is guaranteed, and we only took off $4M last year. A trading team would have to take over the salaries and roster bonuses ($6M) for the next 4 years, very cheap for them but, we get stuck with the $10M left of the signing bonus.

I wonder if there are loopholes to get around that? Like in a player for player trade they restructure their player and pay him the cap hit near the equivalence to what we'd absorb on our end.
