At end of season last year, this off-season and culminating in last nights game, I have had a major gripe regarding our Dolphins.....Where is the the ability to plan ahead?

With a few games left last year, this organisation knew a couple of things:-

- There was a chance of a lockout, which would result in a shortened off-season.
- They knew that there was big chance that both R & R would be cut.
- They knew there was problems on O'line, including lingering injury to Jake Long.
- They knew Henning was not the answer at OC.
- They knew at minimum they needed a QB who could compete and have the potential to take this organisation forward.
- They knew they could leave the D to Nolan.

Why then did they not have the foresight with a few games left, to sack Henning, bring in QB coach David Lee as OC, promote Lex Hilliard to starting HB and have in mind an O'line for next season without continuing to play an injured Jake Long!

The reason I mention David Lee as OC, is there would have been a carry over and a familiarity for the players going into a shortened off season. Dont get me wrong David Lee may have been out of his depth for last couple of games, Lex Hilliard may have proven that he was not up to being a starting RB, but now we will never know! Thats the point!

Can you envisage that D.Lee came in, Henne felt a bit more comfortable, Lex Hilliard turned out to be our version of Mike Tolbert, avg. 4.0 yards and Incognito settled in at Centre, where I think he is best, especially in a 3-4 division lining up directly opposite a NT.

We could have gone into draft and off-season, knowing we have an Offensive system in place, despite lock out, we have a starting RB of which we could get competition through FA and lower end of draft and we have in place a vision of an O'line for next year. We would have been able then to draft Mallet as opposed to Thomas and have a legitimate QB competition, knowing that the backup QB has the potential to be a franchise QB.

Every decision should made be with this Question, can this guy help us win a Superbowl no matter what the risks. If we do not draft Mallet, I would have signed Vince Young. I know many do not like him, but ask the question, who out of, Henne, Matt Moore, even Kevin Kolb & Vince Young, has the potential to take a team to a Superbowl?

The shuffling of the O'line??????? Why did we not at end of year have a plan going into this season. Shuffling Carey to Gaurd, signing what most project a Gaurd to play Centre and moving Incognito to where most believe he played his best football back from Centre to Gaurd. Forget Henne (for a moment), this is Sparano's ultimate failure. He is an O'line coach, who had in place a Top 5 Tackle tandem. How has he not resolved this in 4 years? Why the constant tinkering? We are we now asking a rookie, who struggled with snaps in college after moving from OG to come into NFL and start at Centre where he will be calling shots in a shortened off-season??? Why not have the foresight to leave Incognito at Centre and play Pouncey at Gaurd. Surely a line of:-

LONG-GARNER/JERRY-INCOGNITO-POUNCEY-CAREY is far more suitable than LONG-INCOGNITO-POUNCEY-CAREY-COLUMBO.

I am perplexed by the lack of foresight. I previously have backed Sparano and maybe I am ranting too early, but the more I write and think of coming season, the more I lose faith in him.
 
David Lee was horrible. They wanted Henning to retire to save face. Remember they were still not mathematically eliminated until the loss to the Bills.

this wasn't a unique situation for the Dolphins

- They knew that there was big chance that both R & R would be cut.

of course they knew it, they planned it and then replaced them with Thomas and Bush

- They knew there was problems on O'line, including lingering injury to Jake Long.

and used a 1st round pick on the O-line

- They knew Henning was not the answer at OC.

neither was Lee

- They knew at minimum they needed a QB who could compete and have the potential to take this organisation forward.

I'll give you this one. but at the same time, there wasn't a QB out there (draft or FA) that didn't have a huge question mark hanging around their neck. I would just hate to see Miami give up a high pick for a scrub, we've seen enough of that haven't we?

- They knew they could leave the D to Nolan

and they did, plus he will have Odrick, Burnett, Edds and Wilson to work with this year.

we don't know what will happen with these moves, but to say they didn't address these issues isn't right

No - I think that's where you can't defend this regime. We HAVEN'T "seen enough of that" - in fact we haven't seen ANY of that. We haven't drafted a QB in round 1 since Dan Marino. This was a pretty good QB class that came out and even if Ryan Mallett had some question marks, Ireland still should've taken him at 15. But to think that he ALSO PASSED ON MALLETT IN LATE ROUND 2 ?!?!?!??! - INDEFENSIBLE!!!

I was speaking to the idea of giving up picks for veterans, like a 2nd for Orton or a 1st for Palmer. as Dolphin fans we have seen too many 2nd round picks wasted on veteran scrubs.
in the draft I would have taken Mallet, but what do I know?

Then agreed - I hate giving up high picks for other team's talent. We have to draft our own damn talent. And yeah - I wish I could say that I would've drafted Ingram at 15 and then snagged Mallett where we got Daniel Thomas, but I wouldn't have risked it after the rookie QBs were all flying off the boards. After MIN took Christian Ponder (and with Newton, Locker, Gabbert all gone too), I would've just taken Mallett at 15.

Nothing is more important than drafting our own QB talent.
 
I too was really disappointed in them not drafting Ryan Mallet. I personally felt that our OC Henning was used as an excape goat.

Foresight is.....planning ahead, not reacting when the situation occurs. They could have discovered what they had with Lee & Hilliard before end of season. What risk was there if the both did not pan out?

What you are stating are reactionary measures...........too late! We have seen it a million times in NFL, where a player or coach does not get chance with one franchise but makes it with another. Why did we not find out what we had within our organisation before we let it loose,signed a replacement or even discover that they aint just good enough??????????

So Ireland didn't appease the Dolphin fan base by picking a third round QB in the first round. I wanted Mallett at 15, then again in the second round. But I'm a fan not a GM of a billion dollar company. I cant say i know the exact numbers here, but i would expect the phins put in a few thousand man hours, and a few hundred thousand dollars in there evaluation of Mallett. Mallett has 1st round ability, but there is something wrong in Denmark. QB"S with 1st round ability don't fall to the 3rd round without a bad red flag. That us a fans are not always privy to.
 
imo, they Knew exactly what they had in Hilliard and Lee and rightly decided to get better
