Newly signed defensive end/outside linebacker Jason Taylor is sure to be the center of attention when the Dolphins hold their first OTA of the spring that will be open to the media on Tuesday at their Davie training facility. For one, Taylor hasn’t addressed his signing yet; but more importantly, the Dolphins haven’t talked about where he’s going to line up in the defense.

Of course, this is the time coaches like to experiment, so this could be an ongoing process that goes well into training camp. But you just know Bill Parcells, Jeff Ireland and Tony Sparano have a pretty clear idea of how they want to use their new weapon, and chances are that’s where they’ll try him first.

Dolphin fans remember too well that Cam Cameron and defensive coordinator Dom Capers failed to use Taylor and Joey Porter effectively when they last played together two years ago. Porter was miscast as a strongside linebacker and wound up with 5.5 sacks, while Taylor was moved around and had a significant dropoff from his 2006 season, when he was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year.

hes a linebacker in the 3-4.. if they have him and porter on thr right side teams would just run for 300 yards a game to the right..

I guess everyone's going to flip out then when Jason Taylor appears on the depth chart behind Joey Porter at ROLB.

He's going to line up in the wildcat instead of Pat White.

I think we will see JT line up in three or four different postions during the season. I can see him playing at both DE and at both OLBer positions. We will move him and Joey around to find the most favorable matchups. I could see him and Joey lining up on the same side at times to make the the other team decide who it wants to block one on one. I could see him dropping in zone coverage from the DE position and us sending both LBer's on that side and the saftey and or corner, in this situation, the QB will either panick and throw the quick underneath route, which will hit JT in the hands, or take the sack. I think we will enjoy how these coaches use JT this yr. Especially with better saftey play and hopefully two strong corners. Last yr we had to compensate for a weak FS and only one good corner.

Right now all we have are some big ifs.

If Porter and Taylor have gas left in the tank ... and if Wake is as advertised ... all three of those guys will be lining up all over the place regardless of how they're listed on the depth chart.

its amazing to me that people dont realize we still use the 4-3 alot.

He will rush from DE in 4-3 and OLB in 3-4.

I see us using lots of 4-3 when its 3rd and very long using 5-6 DB's. Too many spread offenses used by NE and Indy. Trifecta knows the deal.

NE beat us in the second game with 5WR the whole damn game. We didnt have enough guys to cover. Now thats changed....so now you will see Porter/JT rushing out of the 4 DL and the rest in coverage.

4-3 = DE
3-4 = OLB
QTR = DE

He will move around and we will have a better pass rush this year. It will not come from just one player. I think this time around we get to see what happens when a better scheme is in place for BOTH Porter & Taylor to succeed.

This team is going in the right direction. We will be in games...we just need to close them out!!!

The secondary was built to help prevent teams like the Pats from slicing us up with 4-5 WR sets. But I think we play a lot more QTR's than Dime packages. There will be 3 DL most of the time not 4. We have a great secondary on paper for a QTR defense. It all depends on the rookies & Wilson. If Wilson, Smith, Clemons & Davis pan out...this secondary will be make points from the QTR defense.

yes we did use a 4-3 a bit last year but i rewatched a ton of the games and we didnt use it nearly as much as you make it seem.
mostly it was 4-2-5 more of a nickel package

It's not really that hard to figure out really. In obvious passing situations we will move Taylor and Porter around, but most of the time one will be rushing from the left side and the other from the right side. Porter is an every-down player, and Taylor no longer is. Additionally, we will see more of what Saban got out of JT--unpredictability. JT will not wear down because he'll be situational. Porter will get enough rests that he's always fresh while JT fills in and continues to terrorize and wear down the LT.

Taylor's reach and sheer quickness will unsettle the LT, then when Porter comes back in and presents the LT with the threat of a bull rush or speed rush, the LT will continue to be offbalance. But, the fact that both will be fresh means the LT will be in for one of his most challenging days of the season.

Porter is our starting ROLB, but he'll be moved around to create mismatches occasionally. Taylor will be the 3rd down pass rusher from the opposite side. Taylor will spell Porter as well. As happy as the coaching staff is to get JT, the happiest people must be Vontae Davis, Sean Smith and Matt Roth. The chances of them having success this year just improved dramatically.
