I just wondered, and really wish some NFl expert would go back some day and rate Marino under this new QBR system they have, just to see how high Dan really would have been ???

I just saw it explained on Sportscenter, and under the new QBR rating, many things are added and taken into consideration. For example, a 4th quarter pass in a tough situation, maybe going for a 1st down,or needed to keep a drive going,or a needed touchdown pass, etccc, is rated much higher than a completed pass of the same type, say in the 2nd quarter, because it is later in the game, and in a tougher situation. we all know Dan led many 4th quarter comebacks and made some great passes in those situations.

Many other new things they they have as well in this new rating system,to evaluate the overall total Quarterback rating,to many to get into now,but basically the new QBR rates everything a QB does, and specifies certain points of the game he did them in,and the more crucial the play or circumstances, the more of a possible higher,or lower rating, depending on how he performed in those really "under pressure situations and times". So its not just so much based on passing effeciency as before, but how crucial those passes and plays were, when needed the most, in other words.

Hope I havent confused anyone, hell I watched it and now after trying to explain part of it, its hard to ! lol But I do understand what theve done, just hope I explained it to where it comes across to all.

Anyway, I honestly wonder how Marino would have rated under this new system, and how you all think he would have as well ? I personally think it would have made his statistics that much more glowing, and prove even more how great of a QB he really was.

Best rating on the list is 82.3 by Peyton in '09.

IMHO I saw Dan easily eclipsing that mark year after year.

It's interesting for sure. I hope they also factor in his sorry running game and defenses over the years.

It's really hard to compare because the game has changed so much. Corners were still allowed to play bump and run during Marino's prime. And now, all teams use the short passing game like a running game, and it's driven completion percentages way up.

Added points to QBR......

Yes, I agree...there were so many games that Marino behind the numbers was much better than the statistic indicated.

For example, let's say that he had a game that he was 25of 34 for 325 yards.....if you broke down the 9 incompletes, 5 of those might of been drops, 3 were thrown out of bounds on purpose, and one of those might of hit a receivers hands and then picked off.

His throws were generally most of the yardage gained and then the receiver added a few YAC's to it. These days, it seems like everything is a dump off throw, screen, down and out, etc. and there is much more YAC added. If you knew anything about the Dolphins when Marino was playing is that it was rare to have anything that res
embled a screen in the playbook (for whatever the reason, they could never utilize the "screen"play very well).

It would be hard to figure out this new stat since you would have to get out all the tapes and evaluate each and every play and being a novice to this relatively new statistic, I'm not even sure how each play gets the proper point evaluation. It would be interesting to see.....any thoughts?

TQBR is a rate stat - meaning it tries to measure how valuable a QB has been, compared to the rest, on a per-play basis.

Football Outsiders uses an (IMO) much better rate stat known as DVOA. You can go to their site to read the long explanation, but basically is very much like ESPN's TQBR, except the Outsiders have been working on their stats since 2002 - and they do the work for *every* face of the game: skill players, units, and entire teams.

Anyway, according to those guys, Marino was ranked 6th, 4th, 6th, 13th, 2nd, 7th, 14th and 27th from 1992 onwards. You can check the rankings for yourselves, here. They have the play-by-play data for every team since that year, and they're continually working to expand their dataset more into the past.

FWIW.

Tha nkssbh1602 for the link, I definitely want to check that out,and appreciate everyones comments as well, all very interesting inputs. I certainly feel Dan was not given the credit he really deserved for so many years carrying a team basically with as someone said,no running game, and many times needed help elsewhere also. Thanks again all for your thoughts.

Btw, did you guys notice who was 3rd on that list? THIRD. Ahead of Rodgers and only behind Brady and Manning. Thats right. You know who it is. But, keep acting like you dont.

Anyways, over the last 3 years, the top 5 in rating were also the top 5 in this new system, just a slightly different order. Basically its the top of the list in the NFL. However, considering the guy that was 3rd this last season in the new rating, I push him into that top 5 and bump Brees down to 6th right now. Thats your top 6 QBs in the league. And its the order I had them rated on my own personal list, before this new rating even came out. Go figure.

You guys keep pretending the guy who was ranked 3rd isnt on that level though. Keep thinking Jake Long was such a great pick. Jake Long was a bad pick despite passing on the beast that is the 3rd ranked guy from last year on that new QB rating. You simply dont sink that much money into an OLman because you dont get the return value. The overall performance of the offense would not suffer that much by replacing Long with an adequate LT. And yet, the money we would save against the cap by doing so would greatly enhance the rest of the team. Its that simple.

You dont pay a LT QB money. You pay QBs QB money. Good ones at least. Imagine how good we would be with the guy that ranked 3rd last year in the new QB rating system making Long's money and a LT making average LT money.

Anyway, take that list from last season and thats your top 5 QBs with Brees at 6. Those are your studs. And because of what Rodgers' rating in the playoffs was you throw that in and bump him to 3rd and bump Rivers up there where he belongs at 4. Rivers had his worst season and that simply wont happen again. Thats why he ranks so high over the last 3 years combined.

Rivers ? I love the guy myself, always have, would love to have gotten him !!! Personally I also really wanted us to go after Brees when we took a look at him a few years ago . I know we passed because of his surgery and injury issue, but I knew the guy was gonna be ok and we should have taken thedam chance ! Why I wasnt called for my oppinion still pisses me off ! lol
