Would you rather have a great QB and an above average RB, or an above average QB and a great RB?

I know my question probably over-simplifies things. We may be seeing this debate live this year. The Colts having the great QB, and the RB is probably (going to be) above average. The Chargers have the great RB, and the QB is probably (going to be) above average. I think both defenses are pretty close as the Colts have improved this year. I think about which team I'd like the Dolphins to more closely emulate and I like the Chargers.

There is something about a team with a great QB (stat-wise) that has a hard time making it to the SB. Of course there are a few exception. Teams more like the Chargers seem to go, which is who I think will go this year.

You're kidding right?

Terrell Davis was great, especially in 97 and 98 lol

Yeah i know man he used to be sick back then. It's amazing how long he went on playing even though he had 5 reconstructive knee surguries.

P. Manning = D. Marino

I would take the great QB anyday. Longer shelf life, more opportunities.

Denver got it done with a GREAT QB and average RBs ... same with NE ...

The ONLY way to do it without a very good / GREAT QB is to get it done with a GREAT - SHUT DOWN, DEFENSE !!

I agree, if I think your comparison means greatness but no SB's.

A few people on this thread have mentioned Denver and NE having great QB's and average RB's. I would would disagree with the Denver reference in the spirit of the question. In fact Denver alone could be part of this debate. In the first half of Elway's career, he was about about how great he was as an individual. He did get to a few SB's but really didn't have a chance. I'm thinking they had Sammy Winder as an RB. I'd say he was above average. Later in Elway's career, when I think he slowed down some, they had Terrel Davis as the RB. At that point in time, I'd say they had an above average QB, and a great RB. They won 2 SB's with that combo.

For NE, although I think Tom Brady is awesome, I wouldn't put him in the class as great in terms of dominating the team and putting up Marino or Manning type numbers consistently. They defintely do not have great RB's. They just follow a different mold.

I don't see anyone stopping the Chargers once the playoff roll. I think they will destroy the teams they face.

Denver couldn't win a Super Bowl untill they got Terrell Davis, and i sure wouldn't call him a average RB.

Tough question because a lot of great QBs either didn't win a championship or didn't win one till they got a great RB to help (see Terrell Davis and Ahman Green).

Ironically i think it depends on the defense.. do we have a great defense? cuz if so then id rather have a great rb and an above average qb to control the clock.. or do we have an above average defense? then id rather have a great qb and above average rb cuz we our offense will have to win some games for us.

I would take the great runningback. Great QBs like Payton and Marino just cant seem to make the SB as ironic as it sounds. Probably do to the fact that the money required to keep the great QB is too much to get anybody else needed to win.
