It seems fans are never content and Im sure it was no different back then.. Were there any players that got labeled "bust" or "overrated" during 72 at any point? Wasnt Griese considered overrated once he went down or even before?

I was -10 years old at the time so I have no recollection of those events.

maybe bob griese because he got injured. ridiculous? you got it.

I was flippant in my previous reply, but really no one was called out on that team.

You have to remember that those were different times, when sports figures were still bigger than life, and we were less inclined to judge them so harshly as they are judged now.

And really, we weren't as jaded.

For the blown pass, I guess that's about it. Thing is they actually won the game anyway, so it wasn't even that big a deal.

Yeah, I can tell you that it was more a subject of good-natured ribbing than anything.

Garo had a tie shop in Midway Mall for a few years after that season. How many here remember that?

My suggestion of Garo Yepremian was made completely in jest because I can't imagine what phin fans would have had to complain about considering that 72 team went undefeated.

Henry Stuckey, a nickle corner, comes to mind as one of those kind of guys. I guess he was a combination of Jerry Wilson, JB Toast Brown, Paul Lankford, and Jamar Fletcher, all rolled into one.

Yes, Dolfans, we did have guys that sucked, even back in 72.

Hey A Finfan knows perfection when he sees it.;)

The entire town was having a love affair with the team so this is really nitpicking, but since I was a season ticket holder and probably one of the few posters here old enough to remember I'll give it a shot:

* The young receiver Otto Stowe was a disappointment. He was our top draft pick (2nd round) in '71, lanky and athletic and we expected big strides in '72. And he became more of a factor when Karl Noonan got hurt in preseason and missed the entire year. Stowe was a flop in '72, catching only a handful of passes as I recall. The fans around me didn't ***** about much but I remember Stowe's name most of all.

* We were petrified at the prospects if Morrall got hurt. The backup to him, after Griese got hurt, was lefty Jim DelGaizo. He wasn't exactly a specimen and no experience. My family always got there early and watched pregame warmups. There were jokes in the stands about how the great season was in peril if DelGaizo had to play.

*The LT spot was in limbo all year. Doug Crusan usually started but he wasn't the greatest athlete and we got some pressure off that side on the rare occasions we passed. Lanky Wayne Moore was the other LT, a former basketballer and not yet in his prime. The coaches would rotate them during the game. Moore seemed to play better as the year went on and he took over the spot in '73

* The DT spot opposite Manny Fernandez wasn't our greatest position. Bob Heinz was a hard trying but somewhat limited. The '72 top draft pick Mike Kadish played quite a bit and had decent stats but he never looked like a great player and didn't pan out long term. The relatively unimpressive performances of the '71 (Stowe) and '72 (Kadish) top picks was a topic all year and throughout the rest of the glory years.

Oh yeah, great nomination. I don't remember Stuckey having a big impact one way or the other in '72, but he screwed up bigtime a couple of years later when forced to play. Wasn't he involved in the infamous long TD in the playoffs at Oakland when Cliff Branch fell down after the catch but no one touched him and Branch was allowed to get up and stoll into the end zone? Stuckey was definitely a Fletcher of his era.
