Which QB interests you more?

I think most know where I stand on who I would like. Vaark is right about being surprised you threw in Marino's stats. I recognized Weeden and Tannehill but was also surprised at the first

Keep in mind that stats are not the end all to a good QB. Weeden had tremendous stats at Ok St but his ability to read defenses, quick release, accuracy, and decision making have me hoping he is the route the Dolphins go.

Well, the team was two years off of a Super Bowl appearance and 12 years removed from their back to back SB wins then. Kinda hard to compare the two situations.
Not to be that guy, but they actually played in SB 17 the season before they drafted Marino. But yeah, people would've been good with anything Shula did.

One of the most important things to look at is how well Tannehill rose to the occasion against the best teams. The fact is, he didn't. He was downright God awful vs. Texas. That's just 1 example. He had other bad games vs. the better teams.

MArino had some bad games his senior year. Cutler played for Vanderbilt and never had a winning season in college.

Marino was drafted first round right after going to a super bowl and Shula knew he would have won that super bowl with a good QB although Woodley did the best he could.

Tannehill will be the pick if he is there.

Different eras, differnet rules, different schemes.

You cant compare QB stats when they played 30 years apart.

I agree with you, but this wasn't supposed to be a serious post to justify taking Tannehill or Weeden by comparing them to Marino. It was intended to just be a more fun post to see what people thought.

I was just a little bored and pulled up their stats and thought maybe this post would a nice change from the bash Ireland and Ross threads that have kind of dominated the board for a while.

Marino would have had a blast playing in the pass happy NFL of today with the rules favoring the WR. Man, he was fun to watch.

In 1983? The reaction would've been "wait, did Shula just draft a player with an alleged cocaine habit to play in the drug capital of the US? ok, sounds bad but I'll trust Shula, he's earned it"
He had earned it. We had just come from playing in the superbowl and while we had no real perceived need at QB, he knew getting Dan at the second to last pick in the first round was an absolute steal!!! Kind of sounds like teams now such as GB when they had Favre and took Rodgers because he fell all the way down to them and it was a steal to get him there even though they didn't need a QB yet. Good teams load up on top tier talent that's available to them, not just fill a hole with whoever is available at that position when their pick comes up. Start drafting smart not scared.

Too lazy to do the math, but on first glance (at least his junior year) Marino had the best touchdown per attempt ratio. Gunslinger?

Was anyone else surprised by Marino's time in the 40?

Which QB, just by going off of stats, interests you the most?

QB #3: Brandon Weeden

DISCLAIMER: I am in no way trying to say that Tannehill or Weeden are, or will be, the next Dan Marino. I was just curious and checked out some college stats, and just thought it would be an interesting post for discussion. I also realize their are hundreds of other things to evaluate and scrutinize in coming to a complete and unbiased comparison between QB's, but for the sake of time and simplicity just went with stats for discussion.

What about Cousins?

All that shows is that you are looking at the wrong stats. Don't get me wrong, stats DO matter
but the most important stat is WINS and LOSSES. Especially wins in BOWL GAMES.

Do you want someone to break Marino's passing records or to win the SUPER BOWL.

A more interesting stat comparison would be with the Manning Brothers, Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Terry Bradshaw, Bob Griese, Joe Montana and Dan Marino. Looking at WINS AND LOSSES in college and BOWL GAMES WON. Maybe wins and losses aren't as important as I think, but I doubt it.

After I saw gruden talk to weeden, I am kinda sold on him. But I hope he slips to the second round atleast.

You forgot Elway who never took Stanford to a bowl game either yet he was the #1 overall pick.

Kudos on the innovative, out of the box approach; knew you were going for the Tannehill and Weeden angle but the Marino wrinkle was an eye opening surprise (although granted, it was a different time in a faraway place). Also knew Weeden was #3 and while he'd definitely be my first choice, if Sherman can convince Philbin Tannehill's the one, I'd be perfectly content going that route too.

This is also my line of thinking, if Miami goes after Tannehill, I am all for it, because that means Sherman wants him, and nobody in the NFL knows how high Tannehill's ceiling is as well as Sherman. If they don't take Tannehill, I will trust this coaching staff, but I REALLY hope they take Weeden.
