Whitlock's comments about Monday Night

So Freeney had a great game without basically doing anything? Jason Taylor had a great game too then!!

I take Gruden's view over Whitlock - Long did what he had to do..., so did Smiley case closed..., and BTW I don't care if the LT ends up on his butt now and agian as long as the RDE doesn't get a shot on theQB and he didn't... Some like Whitlock have unrealistic expectations..., the diiference between playing on turf and the base paths alone can cause a slip - gosh...

Jake Long did not have a great game and if you wanted to declare a winner in the matchup Freeney probably got it. However Long did just enough to keep Freeney out of Pennington's face. Did he play up to his contract? No, I don't think so, but who cares as long as he keeps Chads jersey clean.

We were doing an awful lot of bringing the TE wo help Long, but either way....Freeney didn't get much. I would like to see us be able to leave our LT alone on a DE, but Freeney is no slouch.

When you say "play up to contract" what do you mean? Didn't he keep Pennington upright? Isn't his job to protect Pennington? So help me understand what you mean when you say that because I am lost.

The fact that Long was on his butt I could care less about. If he kept Freeney from getting to Pennington then he did what he is paid to do, period.

I think we basically agree with each other. What I was talking about is some people will say he should dominate every player he comes up against because of where he was drafted and how much he is paid. I disagree with that and think Jake did a good job, I just know how some people on this board think and I am waiting for that argument to come up.

Watching the game on TV I noticed the same thing about Long. The only times he cleanly handled Freeney was when he got double team help. Long's footwork and technique needs to be improved - he is a physical specimen that shouldn't require help.
Freeney did a lot if it took 2 men to block him (same as the benefit Moss gives the PATS by always drawing a double team). By needing a second man to block Freeney, Miami was forced to play 9 on 10 football with the rest.
I like Long and the potential there - but after two games this year he has proven not to be that superior left tackle we all feel he can be.
I also like Ginn but those 3 dropped passes (2 in the endzone) at crucial times and his lack of effort in getting YAC makes me think he would be a good #2 receiver but may never be a true #1.
I'm surprised that Whitlock didn't rip our "D" which was the main reason for our loss.

Also this article fails to mention how Freeney got handled in the running game. We ran most of our draws right at him because he always just flies up the field and doesn't play the run at all. Jake was working people over in the running game.

I think any assessment that Jake Long faired poorly has two major flaws:

1. Too much of the perception is based on the couple of times Jake fell down on the infield dirt. It's infield dirt, and I can't tell you the number of players I've seen lose their footing on it over the years.

2. Overemphasis on pass protection. I guess it's easy to forget that pass protection is only half the battle but in a game where you ran the ball 48 times and only called 35 pass plays, it was even LESS than half the battle.

Jake Long destroyed players in the run game. Just destroyed them. And in pass protection he did what he had to do to keep what Tony Sparano regards as either THE best or the second best pass rusher in the game, at bay.

And perhaps the most important? In the clutch, at the end of the game, when the Dolphins are forced to go pass-pass-pass, Jake Long was not given as much help against Freeney, and he kept Freeney off Pennington's back.

Any OVERALL grade of Jake Long that says he didn't do well in that game is woefully flawed.

Come on guys, I got on Long because of that aweful game he had against atlanta but seriously now, some people expect him to be a terminator or something. Long did ok in the colts game.

I don't think people give enough credit to the these upright RDEs who come ripping through clubbing the LT..., these are not Reggie White/Bruce Smith size DEs who play the run and generally bull rush - the new breed well they pack some punch now and again but they beat you with their legs primarily..., and when the LT is slightly off baalnce they punch hard - smart eh...? this isn't knew but some people fail to appreciate the work of a good LT..., a good LT works in concert with his teamates this is a team game and if they chip away on the RDE who the hell cares..., Smiley had no one else coming for him the pocket was there all night... Where in the rule book does it say that your LT has to go mano to mano on the opposing RDE...? Where oh where...?

Next time Long faces Abraham - Abraham is going to have nighmares..., and hear footsteps in his sleep..., he is going to remember being winded, AB is going to have to shore up that Run D - where was that - Long was a beast - Long is still getting seasoned to the moves..., the power will be there for a decade or longer -

Who was that on "the Oxegyn mask" there in the 4th Q of yeah that was Freeney..., "they" primarily Long wore the RDE down..., game plan worked to perfection... to perfection....

By the end of the game, after the Indy defense was exhausted from being stranded on the field for 45 minutes, Freeney was too tired to mount much of a pass rush. But make no mistake, Freeney, without recording a sack, had a great night against Long.

I found this quote to be comical. So even though the autor admits that Freeney and the Indy D couldn't get off the field or amount a pass rush when it counted, they somehow had a good game because Long slipped on a play or two?

And let's not even mention that one of the reasons the Indy D was so tired from having been on the field so long was because big Jake was pasting them in run blocking, helping to keep Miami on the field for over 75% of the game.

You can create your own success, through success.
