Everyone, talks about Matt as a backup and seems to forget some of the leagues best QBs once played as a backup. Who is the best Back up QB you have ever seen?

Earl Morrall

I shall forever curse the name frank reich who probably prevented us from going to the super bowl in 93

I vote for Earl Morral. He backed John Unitas and Bob Griese. Hard to beat that.

Without question Tom Brady. Guys like Rodger or Young were drafted in the 1st round to be eventual starters.

Don't understand your post. EVERY QB is drafted with the hope that they can one day be the starter. Tom Brady was drafted later but I can assure you no one in the pats FO was saying, "wow I sure hope he never gets good enough to be better than Bledsoe". Besides what has that got to do with anything? The OP was about "best backup", not about how they became a backup.

Any way, sorry if I am being nitpicky, I just wasn't sure what you meant by your post.

My best backup would have to be Dan Marino. He backed up David Woodley for 5 games, not starting his first game until week 6 vs the Bills I believe it was.

hes alluding to the difference to drafting a guy in the 1st round to take over eventually a la Aaron Rodgers/Brett Favre situation vs a guy that is filling a roster spot but there are no expectations for him to take over as the franchise quarterback a la Drew Bledsoe/Tom Brady.

By strict definition a backup quarterback is anyone who isnt starting (duh lol), but what the OP is getting at I believe, is a true back up quarterback.. someone who isnt supposed to be handed the keys to the franchise but finds a way to

Tom Brady first because he took the team to a SB win as a second year QB.
Earl Morrall second.
Frank Reich third.
