Yes, its early in the off-season, but I believe thought should be given to who will back up Vernon Cary at left tackle. (I'm sure Cam and Houck are doing this.) I admit to slightly worrisome thoughts about this. How this pans out may be very important during the regular season. The following seem to be the candidates:

Anthony Alabi (6'5" 315) Had been projected earlier this year as the starter. However, a shaky performance in the first mini-camp and the subsequent injury created an apparent breach of confidence in his moving into a leading role at the LT position. Of course, the lack of significant contact during mini-camp does not allow for entirely accurate offensive line personnel assessments. At this point it appears Alabi's place is at RT, maybe as a starter, maybe as a backup. Will he be the one to backup Carey on the left?

L.J. Shelton (6'6" 345) Did not do well at the LT position last year. However, he does at least have experience at the position. If he becomes our starting RT, and if he was
required to fill in at LT, then another player would have to man his starting RT position. This would result in even more personnel changes and less cohesion on the OL.

Joe Toledo (6'5" 325) Toledo has been looked at both tackle and guard since last year, but his injury situation has been disappointing to say the least. Since Cam is looking for smaller and quicker guards this upcoming season, Toledo seems destined at one of the tackle spots. If he can stay healthy he could compete for a starting spot at RT, and be a viable backup at LT.

Mike Rosenthal (6'7" 318) Does not appear to have the athleticism for LT. If he makes the team at all, it would be backup RT except in an emergency situation, not as the primary backup for LT.

Julius Wilson (6'4" 327) He may have the right dimensions to play LT. Although there have been good reports about his play, he is a project, and at best will make the practice squad. He could end up projecting at RT.

Tala Esera (6'3" 310) Played LT in college, but his size dictates that his future with the Miami Dolphins would be at one of the guard positions.

Marion Dukes (6'3" 319) Will be fortunate to make the practice squad.

IMHO Alabi is the most likely candidate unless Joe Toledo can actually stay healthy for an extended period. In that case he may get the nod. There is also the chance of a late off-season pickup when roster cutdowns take place. What do you all think?

Still pretty early for this kind of speculation. I would love to see Alabi stay healthy and be the primary backup.

I think our tackle position is shaky and we really have no backups. Toledo was injured in college alot and all of last year too and Alabi has been injured off and on every year since we drafted him 3 years ago. I do beleive we have the makeup of a decent line if we can find a LT other than Carey. Right now I would like it to be LT???, HadenotG, SateleC, Shelton G, Carey RT.

I think Carey is more of a backup... I wish we had someone else good enough to beat him out...

I don't know if Carey can be considered more of a backup although the argument could be made that he can not be considered a starter at LT yet either. At this point he's being given the first chance to take the starting job. What he does with it remains to be seen. However, a couple of years ago when being given a look at LT, he did well; it was only the problems with McDougle at RT that necessitated Cary's moving back to the right side. We shall see, but I think Cary will do reasonably well at LT and maybe better than that.

Carey is by far the best lineman we have and vastly underrated. He was a very good RT last year and just coming into his own, if he drops a few pounds to get a little quicker, I have no concerns with him at LT.

Wow, I hope you mean u feel that Carey isn't capable of being a quality LT . . . because its very obvious that not only is he our most talented Lineman (and its not close) . . . he also was one of the best RT's in the league last year . . . I wouldn't hesitate to say that Vernon performed as a top 10 RT in the league last year . . . he was that good. Vernon Carey would never be a backup on this team or any other team . . . they would find room for his talent on the line . . . tho it may not be at LT. Hopefully it is for our sakes . . . because if he fails at it, it will be one of the BIG BIG BIG things that this FO will be criticized for . . . along w/ if Quinn becomes a huge success.

Nice write-up. I'm hoping that alabi and toledo step it up in camp and either one of them bounces shelton at RT or at least both of them win one of the Tackle back-up jobs. I really like the young guys we have drafted, i just have no faith anymore with veterans aquired from other teams. It seems we only have success on the line with our home grown talent...

Thanks! :) I would love to see Toledo in particular, stay healthy; I think if that happens he could really take over the RT starting job. He's just been so disappointing with his penchant for injuries. Alabi had the one recent surgery, I don't think he should be considered injury prone. If Toledo does beat out Shelton, then he and Alabi can fight it out to back up Cary. I really think Cary will be successful as our starting LT. I really feel the same way about the draft picks vs veteran acquisitions. Very refreshing!

I just dont understand why anyone thinks that Shelton would struggle at RT and that a novice who is always injured would beat him out.

I'm not saying I think Shelton will struggle. I think he will do okay at RT. I was thinking back to last year, and Toledo was in the process of taking a starting spot on the OL before his injury. I think he has more raw athleticism than Shelton has shown, but Toledo will have to show a lot to earn the start at RT. But he is a young draft pick and in the long run has more upside (if he can stay healthy).

yea but that spot was at guard of which we were thin. Toledo is not at the talent level of a Shelton even if Shelton is just ok.

Toledo should not have gone on injured reserve last year. The injury he had was relatively minor and he probably could have played in the second half of the season, but Satan opted to put him on IR to free up an active roster spot.

Yeah, I hear you, I hope you're right about Shelton. I think what BennyVW was stating and I was agreeing with was about building the OL through the draft rather than free agents from other teams. Anyway, the thread was about who would be the best prospect at this time to back up the LT starter should it be Carey.
