In my opinion but that is just my opinion, I think Joey Porter will be our defensive player of the year. He will finish the season with 11 sacks, 3 interceptions for touchdowns and 5 forced fumbles. Jason Taylor will have his pro bowl year but not as exciting as last year but either players were close at a point at many times in their career for winning the award which taylor took away last year without a problem.

Your opinions?

Sorry, it's gonna be Zach... He's been getting better with age and I think it's time for his HOF capper. I'm going with Zach for League DMVP!

Zack Thomas is going to need more interceptions for that award. He needs to make game changing plays at his position. While he is a middle linebacker, his other man Joey is more versatile in terms of doing different things.

Good question. Porter and Taylor will benefit from having each other there, as well as Matt Roth. Defenses can't cover all of them. I think it's too close to call, depending on how Taylor is used. If they let him line up wherever he wants again, I'm going with Taylor.

y.bell well be because of jt and joey porter qbs will keep an eye on are lbs so much they will start throwing up balls this guy is fast a big hitter great cover guy ball hawk they will play him, like t.polomalo of pitsburg

With Porter on the team now. It's going to be Zack.Crowder is coming into his own and i think Zack might set a NFL record for tackles in a season.Well, maybe close.:D

I'm thinking 10 sacks from Roth and who knows from Jason and Joey, but I would have to give the nod to Taylor. He was in a new element last year and exceeded expectations by a boat load. With Porter on the other side JT should be unstoppable. Taylor will score more than 3 times this year, mark it down. Havoc, absolute wreaking of havoc with the front seven. The secondary was the weakness last year. It won't be this year. Melvyn Phillips coaching instead of Saban barking and a simplified scheme with an abundance of natural athleticism is a pretty good recipe for a phenomenal defensive year. I cannot freaking wait! I know Brady has a lot of new toys in NE but I can't see him completing a lot of passes from his backside. My biggest worry for the defense this year is any kind of a suspension for Joey Porter either due to the Las Vegas punchfest or, God forbid, any involvement with dogfighting. I know there hasn't been anything in the news about connecting him to it and I hope there is no connection. I just can't forget about his 2 dogs getting out and killing a neighbor's pony. They sound like aggressive animals. Does anybody know if they were euthanized? Frankly, I just want to see Joey Porter on the field for 16 games. I think his addition and improved play from the secondary, special teams and the offense could make this defense dominant with a capital D.

Definitely not Porter

I don;t think he will be for a few reasons:

1) Word around the league and out of Pittsburgh was that his play was starting to decline sharply. He is a phenomenal player, so he will still be very good, don't get me wrong, but not up to the level of his Superbowl season, I don't think.

2) Free agents usually play hard the year before they sign their big contract then coast once they get their fat payday. Unless he has some other motivaion, I doubt Porter will be as dedicated and motivated as JT ALWAYS is.

3) Porter is a nightlife addict and we just brought him to Miami's South Beach (where he has already been seen partying since minicamps started) . I think his nighttime exracurriculars won't help him focus on being as dominant as he could be.

I think that in this defense Porter WILL be very good, but not good enough to be our defensive MVP.

JT again, but Porter will have higher numbers than recent years, cause he's never played with a player like JT who WILL be the center of attend this year for o-lineman blocking him,yet again.

TOTALLY agree.... and the dogfighting thing has been on my mind. This issue is really gathering a TON of steam and moving towards being a mainstream media item, which will mean Goodell has to do something major to save face for the NFL. He'll do it if he has to (look at the disciplinarian approach he has already taken with other off-the-field incidents, like Pacman's one year suuspension). Goodell wants a league with a clean rep and that might mean investigating and exposing which other NFL players are involved in dogfighting.

If players like Portis and Buchanon had kept their mouths shut instead of condoning and endorsing dogfighting, maybe that wouldn't be an issue, but now it is obvious that dogfighting is a prevalent pastime of many NFL players. I'd be shocked if Porter were not among those players, given his history with aggressive dogs and off-the-field trouble. Oh, and altercations on casino floors in Vegas lead me to believe he doesn't exactly hate gambling either, does he?

I expect Joey to get suspended by October or November, but pray I am wrong.
