Article from the Palm Beach Post where Coach Saban discusses the backup running back position. It sounds as if he's not totally sold on anyone on our roster going into the season as Ronnie's backup (and neither am I):

http://www.palmbeachpost.com/dolphins/content/sports/epaper/2006/08/23/a3c_fins_notebook_0823.html

Here's an exerpt:

"I don't feel like that's a position where we're totally settled on making an evaluation or feeling that we have the kind of quality depth that we might need," Saban said. "So it might be something that we continue to work to develop as well as address."

I like Sammy Morris. He's tough, hard-working and a great special teams player. He'll do anything the team asks him to do. I definitely think we should keep him. But as the article points out, Sammy missed 10 games between 2003 and 2004. He was healthy in 2005, but you don't want your top pick to have a history with injuries, otherwise with an injury to Ronnie and if Sammy gets dinged up, you're looking at Travis Minor being our starter with Kay Jay Harris being the top backup. That thought doesn't exactly inspire confidence. Make no mistake, Travis Minor is a HELL of a special teams guy, and a decent change of pace back, but isn't the kind of back that could carry the ball 20-25 times a game.

So what options are out there at RB? The names T.J. Duckett, Stephen Davis and Chris Brown have been mentioned. Duckett and Brown would require somewhat high draft picks to acquire, so I think you can rule them out (not to mention the fact Chris Brown, a hell of a running back when healthy, has had problems staying healthy as well). Now I'm not sure of the status of Stephen Davis' health (he missed a few of the final games in 2005), but still managed to score 12 TDs. He doesn't have a lot left in the tank, but he could help us out for a year and would be a great mentor to Ronnie. In fact, there are a lot of similarities between Ronnie and Stephen Davis. Both are Auburn alumni and are roughly the same size and build.

There aren't a lot of studs out there left to sign (that's why the Patriots signed Junior Seau last week). I think it would be good to sign a back who has had to carry the rock before and done well doing it. Who that back is remains to be seen. Any thoughts?

I think it will be Artose Pinner the Rb from Detroit.

Chris Brown...Would like to see it happen

I think if Chris Brown can stay healthy and we could get him for a fair price, he would be an excellent addition to our team. Those are two big "if's". From what I've heard, the Titans want a 2nd or 3rd round pick for him and Brown has had injury problems. But he has been very productive when he's healthy.

I have a feeling this is much ado about nothing. Personally, I think Sammy Morris can carry the load just fine.

Another name that's being mentioned is Cedric Cobbs, who I believe is still with Denver. He would probably be available for a low pick or a fringe player in trade. He was a star at Arkansas, but has done relatively nothing in the pros. If we get him, it would likely be for the 3rd or 4th running back spot.

I don't have a problem with Sammy's ability. He spelled Ronnie nicely last year while Ricky was suspended. It's his ability to stay healthy that has me concerned. Yes, he was healthy last year, but he did miss 10 games between 2003-2004. That has to be taken into consideration.

That sounds okay if we needed a 3rd or 4th RB, but we need a solid back-up. I like Morris back there, but if we can land Chris Brown that would help us out alot.

Pinner would be an interesting possibility. He scored 3 TDs on an awful Lions team last year and has never lost a fumble in the NFL on 237 touches. That's pretty damned good. I think there are a lot of similarities between Pinner and Sammy Morris (both not big name guys, but just do a good job of doing what they're asked to do).

Are the LIONS looking to trade him???

I agree. We do need a legitimate #2 running back. Sammy Morris hasn't separated himself from the pack enough to justify earning the spot outright. Coach Saban has said that it's a position we're not necessarily content with. If Chris Brown can stay healthy, he would definitely be an upgrade over Sammy Morris (no offense to Sammy and what he does for the football team).

It appears so. The article I provided a link to at the top of this thread says that Cedric Cobbs and Artose Pinner are on the market for teams looking for depth at running back. It might be he's caught up in a numbers game in Detroit. I just don't know if he'd be an upgrade over Sammy Morris though.

Chris Brown can be a good 3rd down guy for us. If there was a way to land him for a good price, it would solidify our back field.
