So I just got of the phone with my dad. He has been a Dolphins Fan since the day Shula left the Colts and began coaching the Fins. The last few years he has been what us Homers like to call... A "Debbie Downer".

Anyway he said the Dolphins look like a team that can win a lot of games this year, and that I am gonna be really happy with this team this year. He still thinks we are not gonna win the division he thinks that a wildcard spot is very realistic. He said thank God that they didn't get Orton and Henne looked like a real NFL QB. After watching both Monday night games he said it was clear that the Dolphins are now amongst the rank of real teams.

I pointed out that unfortunately Belicheat has discovered a new way to expose NFL defenses. He has again created severe mismatches with his pass recieving out of the backfield, slot, and TE positions. NFL teams are gonna have a real tough time defending them with the conventional defensive packages.

So after my original assement of the game. Basically the Pats are a defensive matchup nightmare, I am happy to hear my dad state that the Dolphins look like a real NFL team, a statement that he has not believed in several years.

It's ONE game. The Patriots have had the same system in place for 10 years....we have a bunch of new coaches and players, and didn't have much of a preseason or training camp......99% of the time the team with a great system in place is going to win. At least Daboll's offense is looking much better than the crap we have been running. Our defense got lit up and there are no excuses for this, but it is just the first game of the season.

I agree their system has been in place. But now they have major weapon at TE. Along with Welker it seems that the 1 and 2 recievers are merly decoys at this point. I think we need to start thinking about putting guys like Davis on Welker or Hernandez.

Very demoralizing getting beat up on defense by Brady and company, but they are just better. If you can't get pressure on Brady consistently, you are dead! What bothered me was the complete abscence of a power running game. If you can't run for 1/2 yard on the goal line, you have no chance!

if we can get this defense in shape, we have a scary team to play against.

For sure. I can't believe didn't QB sneak on the last goal line try. I am blown away by the league's philosophy to abandon the run on goal line plays. The Cowgirls blew it the other night by trying to pass too. Its hard to run here but the pass is close to as hard and there is much more room for disaster. Get to the goal line with two or three shots I say pound, pound, pound. If you get beat you get beat.

I can't say I didn't see this coming. Here are examples of things I wrote:

I think the primary problem with the line of thinking that we'll win as long as the OL doesn't cave in pass pro and they are able to get some semblance of the ground game, is an over-casual dismissal of the matchup problems that the Patriots' offense presents to the Miami defense.

The Miami defense is good. Or at least they should be. But they were good a year ago. And you know what the Pats offense did to us a year ago? Tom Brady and Brian Hoyer combined for 36 of 53 for 474 yards, 4 TD and 0 INTs. BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Danny Woodhead combined for 211 yards on 46 runs, with 2 TDs.

That's a 121.0 QB Rating and a 4.6 yards per carry average.

The Dolphins' defense was good last year. But they weren't GREAT. They weren't great because when the good defense of the Dolphins met with the good offense of the Patriots (they were, after all, the #1 offense in the NFL on a points basis), the Patriots' offense prevailed...easily, and consecutively. They were efficient, they got the job done, and they suffered almost no problems from the vaunted Miami defense in terms of putting a damper on their efficiency.

So what I don't get is this assumption that the Dolphins' defense should have the Patriots' offense nailed dead to rights, and the only question comes down to the whether our offense can hold up its end of the bargain.

I'm leaning toward a relative shoot-out, with both teams going high tempo to try and wear out the opposing defense, and the Patriots win by more than 7. They play the game for a reason, and so on any given Sunday (Monday) any team can prevail...but there's some logic involved in the optimist case that I don't buy.

And then the day before...

One thing I did notice all weekend were cramps, college and pro...north and south. This game tomorrow is in Miami at 7pm. It's be hot and very humid. Cramps could play a heavy factor. But where you'd think that would favor the Dolphins...I don't buy that. This hasn't been a team that is used to the extreme weather conditions of its own region for YEARS. We used to practice out in the heat and humidity every day, now we have an air conditioned indoor bubble that we practice in on a lot of days. We used to play at 1pm and never be the team that would ever look tired, or get cramps. Now I expect that if cramps are a factor, they could be just as big a factor for the Dolphins as for the Patriots...maybe more. Brandon Marshall could start cramping up, his stamina has notoriously been an issue and I expect him to get plenty of touches. Our secondary could start cramping up. The Pats will only have 6 healthy OLs at the game but lucky for them OLs tend not to cramp as much IMO.

And going back to a month ago...

Here are my problems with the team:

1. Quarterback. I won't get into it.

2. Reggie Bush. As Michael Lombardi says, Reggie Bush is not a very good ball carrier. Yes, he'll catch the ball. We know. But they're also going to have him run the ball more than the Saints had him doing. They're talking about getting him 16 touches a game. That means 10 to 12 carries per game for a guy that averages 3.4 yards per carry on grass. Oh, and of course, he's got a wrecked knee and can't stay healthy even with the marginal amount of workload the Saints have been giving him, which the Dolphins plan to increase. And what about those catches? Keep something in mind. In the NFL you want to shoot for about 8 yards per attempt on your passes, if not more. Any time you're throwing to Reggie Bush is a 6.0 yard per attempt throw. That's the average, even in New Orleans where he had EVERYTHING going for him. Throwing the ball to Reggie brings your averages DOWN, makes your passing game LESS efficient. So, you need to pick your situations and reasoning for throwing the ball to him wisely. You need to do it because it keeps defenses honest. You need to do it to convert third downs. You need to do it to score touchdowns. I'll leave it up to you whether you trust the Miami Dolphins coaches and quarterbacks to handle that fire without getting burned. I know what I think.

3. Daniel Thomas. He's a rookie 2nd/3rd rounder who only has two years of experience at tailback. He's a power runner with less than ideal pad level, that didn't get a whole lot of yards after contact in college, could be stoned by linebackers regularly without falling forward at all, and would often get only about an extra yard when tackled by DBs. He had some fumbling issues in college, and you can't tout the guy having not fumbled the ball in practice when a bunch of these practices don't even include pads anymore, don't involve much (if any) hitting, and do not involve ANY tackling. That's the most useless thing to point out, IMO...that he hasn't fumbled in practice. Everyone ALWAYS overrates rookie runners. They swear there's no learning curve. They're wrong. Sorry, that's just the way it is, they're wrong. There is a perceptible learning curve and I don't expect him to be a very efficient ball carrier as a rookie, especially since he's so raw. And considering this is only his third year being a true tailback, having previously been a JUCO Wildcat QB...would it surprise me if he has weird hiccups like fumbles on exchanges and stuff that you'd normally not think to be a problem? Hell, it'd surprise me if he DIDN'T have stuff like that happen.

4. Tight End. I'm sorry but with Charles Clay working most at fullback and being listed as a fullback, we have as much of a #2 TE problem this year as we did a year ago, with the terrible trio of Mickey Shuler, Jeron Mastrud and Dedrick Epps "competing" for snaps. None of them are even good blockers! And what if Anthony Fasano takes a step backward, as he did in 2009 when he seemed to drop everything thrown to him and just didn't look focused? Oh and as for Charles Clay himself...SIXTH ROUND ROOKIE. Try and look at that objectively for a second, please. Imagine last year that you're listening to a fan of the Rams talk about what a difference maker Fendi Onobun is going to be for the offense. What would you think about that?

5. Guard. Richie Incognito is really only an average player and he does nothing in space. Vernon Carey is a better player, but he also does nothing in space. This was a big problem for the Dolphins' ground attack in 2010, the inability of the guards to make second level blocks. How is that improved with a combination of Carey and Incognito? The answer is, it's not. It remains a problem. Meanwhile, supposedly the Dolphins are installing more zone plays, which require your players to get on the move and out into space more, making second level blocks so that your back can find cutback lanes. Last year the Dolphins' Guards were inadequate in space even with the old style run plays. The new style run plays could expose them to their inadequacies even more.

6. Right Tackle. Marc Colombo. Ray Willis. Not saying any more than that. Hopefully they start Nate Garner either at LG or RT. But I wonder if they're smart enough to do that.

7. Pass Rush. One of my biggest fears over a defensive backslide was related to what happens when/if Cameron Wake starts getting game planned more, taking him out of the pass rush equation. Players have breakout years and then follow up with a down year ALL THE TIME. It's no new phenomenon. Who picks up the slack? I don't believe Koa Misi is in position to do that yet, and I have ZERO faith in Jason Taylor as a good pass rusher. He hasn't been a good pass rusher in years. Oh, and what's this I hear about JT taking 1st team reps in practice ahead of Misi? Yeah, cuz THAT worked out BEAUTIFULLY in 2007 and 2009.

8. Football IQ. Disagree all you want, but when you take Channing Crowder off the table, you lose Football IQ. He's replaced with Kevin Burnett, whom I saw with my very own eyes getting told where to be and being scolded after plays in San Diego by Stephen Cooper, who was the brains of that LBs group (Ron Rivera says Cooper the smartest player he's ever coached). People say oh well now that just means Dansby steps up. I got news for you, Crowder's Football IQ and film prowess were no hindrance to Dansby. He had as much chance to step up and be a smart player with Crowder as he will without him. In fact I believe when you get two smart, communicative guys like that together, they're smarter together than they are apart. I don't think Kevin Burnett walks in with Crowder's Football IQ and that concerns me because it could mean holes start opening up in the ground defense, which would take away some of those choice opportunities for our pass rushers and play makers to make plays against the passing game in pressure situations. Kevin Burnett is not as good against the run as Crowder was. And evidently he's also got his own injury problems same as Crowder did. What I didn't want the defense to do is **** with the formula. Make sure your pass rush can keep an even keel even when Wake starts getting more attention, let your growing players in the secondary grow into better play makers, and you'll be a better defense. **** with the formula, and you might be a worse defense. The Dolphins ****ed with the formula.

9. Safety. Yeremiah Bell is old, and he's got an injury history. I guess I'm the only one worried about this? There's a sense among the coaches that Chris Clemons may have gotten away with some things last year that he might not get away with this year. I'd keep an eye on this one because the Dolphins have been putting band-aids on a staph infection in the form of 6th and 7th round picks (Chris Clemons, Reshad Jones, Jimmy Wilson) and it wouldn't exactly shock me if problems start to emerge because of that.

10. Special teams. Jon Amaya and Tim Dobbins good special teams players in 2010. Both are gone. As is Patrick Cobbs, who was another good special teams player. And last I checked, John Bonamego's assistant who took over in his place, hasn't exactly proven himself to be an awesome special teams coach. This area has been a CONSTANT problem in the Sparano/Ireland reign...so why do we assume that it'll get better? Especially when some of your best special teams players were just given the boot?

This doesn't mean the Dolphins don't have good things going for them. Of course they do. I think the Dolphins' WRs are going to be better than ever, I think the DL is going to be better than ever, and I think the corners are going to be better than ever. And if the Dolphins can avoid a losing streak, I think Henne could be better than he has been in the past, especially with the help from the receivers.

Let's see if we can count these down...

1. Quarterback – Chad Henne was not the reason we lost the game. But Tom Brady WAS the reason the Patriots won the game. This is a classic case of one QB out-dueling another, saying we’re going to press you into a track meet, fast paced action with lots of passing and I dare you to keep up and score touchdowns. Brady scored touchdowns. Henne stalled twice near the goal line. Again WE DID NOT LOSE BECAUSE OF CHAD HENNE. But the Patriots won because of Tom Brady and it goes as an example of why I keep saying you keep sifting through quarterbacks until you find an elite one. Even after a night like last night I don’t think the staunchest of Henne supporters will claim he’s on his way to elite status.

2. Reggie Bush – Did he get the job done, or not? I say not. Couldn’t run the ball effectively which would have slowed down the Patriots’ passing attack and kept them off the field. In fact, trying to run him more often bogged the offense down, because after that first drive where he busted a nice 13 yard run, he ran 10 times for 25 yards. That STINKS. And his contributions in the passing game? He was thrown at 10 times, had 56 yards with a garbage TD. We were only 2 of 14 on 3rd down in the game. Reggie Bush had the ball in his hands on 4 of those 12 unsuccessful 3rd down conversions. This is what I’ve been talking about! He’s a double-edged sword and it’s hard to find the way to get him to cut the opponent without also cutting yourself. If Sean Payton and Drew Brees couldn’t do it, why would Brian Daboll and Chad Henne be able to do it?

3. Daniel Thomas – Didn’t even dress for the game even though he was healthy and practicing. Great 2nd round pick there.

4. Backup Tight End – Certainly didn’t get any help in the run blocking or passing game last night from the guys behind Anthony Fasano. Meanwhile, the Patriots’ #2 tight end Aaron Hernandez tore us apart.

5. Guard – Do I have to say anything here? They were awful, and their skill sets don’t fit this ground scheme.

6. Right Tackle – I don’t have the numbers yet of course but I thought Colombo was very pedestrian at best and I think he gave up at least one of the sacks on Henne.

7. Pass Rush Outside of Wake – Here’s a bingo. The Dolphins’ answer to the question of what happens when/if Cam Wake gets neutralized in pass rush was to sign an ancient and ineffective Jason Taylor. Congratulations. Meanwhile, Antwan Barnes, the guy I kept talking about and making videos about and everything, re-signed with San Diego for a mere $1.5 million a year. Know what he did this weekend? He rushed the passer 9 times and got 1 Sack, 1 Hit and 2 Pressures. Wouldn’t be surprised if Jason Taylor had half that production on three times that many snaps.

8. Football IQ – Where was it??? The Patriots hit us with a hurry-up and neither Karlos Dansby nor Kevin Burnett nor Reshad Jones nor Yeremiah Bell could get everyone lined up and knowing what they were doing. It was embarrassing.

9. Safety – Reshad Jones (a.k.a. Gibril Wilson Part Deux) should be outright cut. He was awful in the game. And Yeremiah Bell didn’t do anything to help the secondary either. This has been a slow festering wound that the Dolphins have been trying to get away with applying 6th round band-aids onto…and last night it tore open and smelled like rotted flesh.

10. Special Teams – Way to go Jason Trusnik, you hold more than Richie Incognito, and that’s saying something. Our punt return average? 5.5 yards per return. Their punt return average? 11.8 yards per return. Add in Trusnik’s penalties, add in their 24.5 yard kick return average versus our 21.5 yard average…they dominates special teams. And you know what? At some point with the home crowd ready to get going at the slightest sign of life/competency, nothing would have gotten that crowd going quite like a big punt or kick return. Do I know that Phil Livas would have provided that? No. Would he have had a much better chance of doing that than Davone Bess or Clyde Gates? You’re damn right.

what does a wild card appearance get us again? does it get us a top 10 draft pick something this team DESPERATELY NEEDS? (which this coach will probably use to bring in a lineman but hey)

Look Phins arent going to be playing a team that can EFFECTIVELY spread us out with two PRO BOWL WORTHY tight ends on a WEEKLY basis, They couldnt stop run or pass because they were stuck playing in nickel situations. You name me another opponent on the schedule that can do that? go on, ill wait.....

Sift till we find 1??? Really ??? like they are in the bargain bin!!! There are 5 Elite QBs in this league. And I doubt that the other 4 would have been that good last night. I don't think Rivers does that, Manning doesn't either due to the fact that his weapons have declined. So you got Rogers, Brees, and Brady. We need a good-great QB. An elite one would be nice, but we along with the other 90% of teams in this league aren't gonna get it. So we need to win with other aspects contribute.

ck...how do you know that d thomas was healthy and practicing and was just a scratch inactive???

So.......... Blow the whole things up ? And hire our arm chair QB...

Look it was a game where we were out coached, out played, out worked, out hit, out and out it looked like a preseason game. Brady actually left more pts out there - he missed guys and they even had to punt

Our team is young inexperienced and as everyone could see out of playing shape - when you are out of shape you can't make good decisions and your legs and hands won't go where you like them to go - we saw it all night and it was painful

And our team needs to shut up (Vontae)

Henne is by far the best QB we have had since Marino and when his day is finally done in Miami and his career he will be appreciated as being the guy not like the past 13 QBs we brought in - and certain guys will clam up and go away - because they can't see anything but what you want to see - if they can't call these athletes as HOF players from out of College then there pride is dented

Sparano said in his press conference a little bit ago that Thomas wasn't close to playing because of his injury.

Well Maybe the Pats will get dumped by someone other than us and we can cruise threw... I know the Pack fans are happy with last years wild card appearance.

the problem is the dolphins have been exposed
now everybody has the film to break down the dolphins defense
you wanna beat the dolphins run hurry up and pick on carrol and bess
by 3rd quarter the dolphins will be falling down from cramps.

The lack of a power running game hurts too
When henne is your most effective rusher says alot
:crazy::rolleyes2::crazy:
