Obviously there have been many threads started about our guard play to this point and there have been lots of concerns. However there seems to be a disconnect between the coaches of the Miami Dolphins and finheaven posters. Everyone on finheaven seems to assume that if Miami were to aquire a new guard (which is probably moot at this point) he'd replace Dallas Thomas in the starting lineup yet everything coming of Davie points to Billy Turner being the one who would get replaced. In fact I read something yesterday stating that Jamil Douglas was going to get a shot to beat out Turner in the coming week. So who's right here? Has Thomas been that much better in the preseason than Turner to this point and is Turner really the bigger weak link despite what finheaven may think?

thomas has been better turner has more upside

thomas also has a year nfl offseason and experience overall over turner which i think shows even if thomas ceiling is lower

Thomas has improved but there is still a lot of room for improvement. Turner is struggling more than Thomas, it seems he is on the same learning curve as Thomas but I believe he will end up being a better lineman than Thomas. We will have to practice patience with the development of these two, I just hope it won't be at the expense of our QB's health.

I think Turner is going to be fine even if there is an early stumble or 2

when i say thomas has been better i should say hes been more consistent but i did see him whiff and grab a guy in the hole from behind and get away with it...so its not like he's been stellar...he's just been more consistent than the past...better base and anchor ability...but i also think left guard fits him a lot better than right...

turner flashes higher ability though at times...the consistency has to pick up...and he's a different level athlete...if turner fails at guard miamis fallback which they have is always tackle...as i've been saying i think he's a better tackle fit anyways but he's got the strength and the pop in his hands where i think in time he can play a solid guard...i just think he's better in space and his lower half is more that of a tackle

Maybe we shouldn't draft any more guards with last names start with a T

Ozzy rules!!

Obviously the coaches have a better understanding of their players, they see them every day in practice as well understand what each players responsibility is on each play.

Thomas has been decent and consistent...in the end, that is all you need. Especially if the play around him with Pounce and BA is good to very good.

Turner has the strength and athleticism to be a very good lineman in the NFL, he also has the temperament...for some reason he just hasn't put it all together...I do believe it comes...hopefully by Buffalo, if it does he has the potential to be a standout on the line.

They were both fine against Carolina.

Nothing that screamed "garbage"

They both will continue to get better.

I think we're ok up front. Tannehill will have to make plays at times, every QB does. Miller had 1000 yards last year so we know they can run block. My biggest complaint is the short yardage blocking. We don't have the maulers that can out muscle people to convert third and fourth and short so we often line up in the shotgun spread formation and run the read option and\or inside handoffs in those situations. That frosts my azz but it's more scheme than anything.

Douglas had a very poor outing versus u Carolina. He is the player that is not ready to face 1st defense as a sub. He needs the experience, so play him. Just expect for him to be noticed by everyone as he whiffs, gets driven back, and makes mistakes.

Not sure that I have seen any post recently about anyone thinking Dallas will be the one replaced if another OG is brought in. I said back in May that Dallas would be fine and Turner would be the one that would struggle, and slowly more and more have came around to that way of thinking. I really agree with Hoops and have said so since we drafted him that Turner will be a better OT than OG. He just doesn't look natural at OG and seems to have lost all his confidence.

Dallas has left off where he was last year before the moronic decision to move him to RT. He has shown several times this year to get to the 2nd level and even get out around the corner pulling. He has really improved his ability to hit smaller guys in open space (something he was terrible at before). Dallas will never be a pro bowl player but as I said before mini camp, if they leave Dallas at LG he will not be the subject of any negative discussion by midseason.

As for Turner I feel the coaching staff is forcing a round peg in a square hole. I don't think the peg has his full heart in it and the whole is not accepting it very well either. IMO we should be giving Douglas as many snaps at RG as possible. He is our best bet at a solid starting lineup and Turner could turn into the backup swing OT we have all been searching for. Seems to make too much sense for it to actually happen. Guess we will see.

You must have been watching someone else. Douglas was the only guy i saw getting into the second level and there were a few decent runs on his side. Dont remember him allowing a sack.

IF thats a bad game, i'll take it.

And i thought by reading the camp reports that Douglas should have gotten the nod overThomas. Thomas was his usual iffy self at the start and Douglas got his chance. He stayed with the ones for sometime. Then, they gave Turner another shot with the starting spot. He came out, got a pair of penalties back to back and then a sack and was pulled.

The only thing i saw out of douglas was getting pushed back to far at times on the bull rush, and that was against Earl Mitchell who is one of the games best bull rushers (unfortunately, his only move). Right before the pre season started, he was interviewed by the sentinel and was asked what he thought about his overall game and if he felt he could start. And he said he was getting pushed back on the bull rush a little much but said it was a technique thing but otherwise he was sound and ready for the job.

But, less than a week after Thomas epic meltdown on his return to the starting spot, there he is again. And hasnt left. But i knew before camp started, unless someone looked like a first year all pro in camp, Thomas was starting. The staff has a thing for him. And speaking of thomas's meltdown, this is his m/o. He will look a pro at times but as the game goes on and he gets tired or just getting beat by his man, the penalties and bonehead mistakes appear. He has looked ok in small time with the starters in the 2 pre games but i fear whats coming when he has more than 7 minutes playing time.

But again, i dont know what you saw, but Douglas did not have a "bad" game at all. I wouldnt have one issue with starting day one.

This is a wait-n-see moment for me. Coaches are certainly going to have more valuable information than any of us, but doesn't mean we should blindly assume they're correct.

between last year's performance and the Phins DL being so dominant, fans have been in panic mode. Miami def has financial prudency to consider and it's the reality of signing Suh and Tannehill. As an organization, there will be more dependence on cheaper, younger talent going forward. so get used to that. Miami has to continue to draft well and shuffle the roster with very high priced players and low-priced
