Hey Everyone,
As I'm sitting here anxiously awaiting my trip to the Meadowlands to watch the Fins/Jets, the thought of which team has more pressure on it comes to mind. Along with this, which team can better gauge success by this game.
Some think the Jets have more pressure on them because:
1. They got Favre- the expectations around him alone almost put more pressure on the Jets to win
2. Early Season success- the Jets started off great and along with Favre, the Super Bowl talk started. They since have collapsed which begs to argue their season, regardless of this game, is lost.
3. Free Agent Acquistions- Unlike the Fins who got solid but not sexy Free Agents, the Favre went for the flassy and got Favre, Fanaca, and Kris Jenkins. The way they went about it put expectations on their team right away. Comparing our acqusitions to the Jets presents the fact that we have the advantage in quality FAs.
4. Jets are home- despite their collapse, the Jets are home and are actually favored in this game.
5. Mangini's Job- there has been talk about his job being in jeopardy. Even if it is just talk, it puts more pressure on Mangini to win this game to at least have a shot at winning the playoffs.
So that's why the pressure is on the Jets.
Why it is, or isn't, on the Fins
1. We were 1-15 last year- Enough said. Improvement could have been considered going 4-12. And we far exceeded that.
2. With that being said, the Jets are struggling which, to some, puts pressure on the Fins to win. I can see this argument going both ways but just wanted to present it.
3. Many "experts" are picking the Fins to win . Even with this being said the Fins seem loose and very grounded with their approach to this game. Good job Tony Sparano
4. Cinderella Storyline- This really doesn't put pressue but in some cases it does. Often when a team far exceeds their expectations, many people want that team to succeed and go farther. So, although it's not direct pressure, in a way it is.
Just some fun thoughts and honestly I think the Jets, even though they've played way below expectations and the Fins are playin great, have the majority of the pressure on them for this game and have the most to lose.

Easily the Jets. They got all the high priced free agents and were supposed to make the playoffs. Also, their coach knows that if they don't make it in, he'll likely be fired on Monday.

I'd agree that the pressure is on the Jets but right now I have to admit that I'm feeling a lot of pressure as well.

Jets, and it is no contest. A lot of money was invested in high-priced free agency in the offseason, and as such, expectations ran high. Too high, I felt at the beginning of the season...Favre was aging and I didn't know how he'd work into their offense. Expectations soared higher after getting to 8-3 and beating the Titans.

You can't follow that up with the slide the Jets did. There is no excuse for going 0-4 against the worst division in football. A team that the New York Times prematurely quipped was Super Bowl bound now needs help just to get into the playoffs. Rumors of Mangini's job security are being tossed around. It's on their home field, against a rival...who will win the division if they prevail. It doesn't become more of a pressure cooker than that.

With that being said, some of the pressure might slide away if the Patriots win at 1 pm. With less likely playoff chances, the Jets will know they are depending on an unlikely Ravens loss for their chances.

Jets have a ridiculous amount of pressure on them. I'm looking forward to seeing the Dolphins bury them in their expectations.

After reading the weather forecast, I think the pressure could be on the field goal kickers. I hope Dan Carpenter has been practicing like crazy for WINDY conditions the past few weeks. It'll be cloudy and might rain a little too. At least it'll be warm out there compared to the KC game.

That wind is also going to have an effect on the passing game. Thankfully, Chad is used to playing in windy conditions at the Meadowlands. He needs to get some velocity on the ball. No "floaters" thrown off the back foot while scrambling. I hope all our receivers are ready for it. They need to focus on that ball ALL THE WAY INTO THEIR HANDS. They gotta play fearless out there. This is a HUGE game to say the least.

Jets.

The way they're looking at it is " Oh man.. we're in for a big one. If we lose to the team that could have lost to a college team last year, we're going to be on the bottom of the other 31 teams of the NFL's shoes. If we lose.. we're screwed, big time. " ..whereas if we lose, we're not gonna get any flack for it, and our turnaround will still be a huge, huge story.

I don't know that I am fully understanding your definition of pressure. The way I see it we are both under a huge amount of pressure. Neither of us can afford to lose this game or we are out of the playoffs. So we are both feeling as much pressure as we can. Now I see the professional football player as living for these situations. This is where they can prove they are worth their paychecks.
Now if you are using the word pressure instead of intangible that is something totally different. I think we are getting most of the intangibles. We have been winning in the 4th so we can play from behind a LOT better than they can. If they get behind and have to throw they are in trouble. Also the fans will be very quick to turn on them up there if they get behind by 10 or more. Also we have been playing better lately so we have more momentum. Also the weather seems to have been better than we could have imagined a week or two ago. Then there is the QB situation. Pennington is going to be more focused to play his best game ever. Now that is not always a good thing. Sometimes players can try too hard but I really think Penny is the kind who tries extra hard not by forcing plays that aren't there but by spending even MORE time studying tape to try and find an advantage.
Most of these kinds of games are not won between the lines but between the ears. The smarter more confident team who can trust the guy beside him and trust the coach to outsmart the other sideline has the best chance to be able to react naturally rather than having to force plays. This mentallity is what makes a team able to cut down on turnovers, offsides penalties and other mistakes that comes from overthinking things. I like where we are as a team right now better than where they are. They have the talent, we have the team. Let's line em up, kick it off, and see if brains don't once again beat brawn. With this CS and leader under center I like our chances.

The pressure in my opinion is on the Dolphins. The pressure was on the Jets for the Bills game and Seattle game and they choked. They dont control their own destiny. The Dolphins do. It's not about "oh its been a great season" anymore. You win your the 3 seed and AFC East champs. The Jets can win and still go home. The pressure is on the Dolphins to finish this great season of theirs off IMO.

The Jets brought in all those FA's but they choked. The only thing their playing for is to end your season and maybe save Mangini's job. As far as this season and this game is concerned your playing for a lot more.

I agree with your post however why would they want to save Mangina's job. Isnt he one of the most disliked coaches in the league?

I dont know if he is one of the most disliked coaches in the league. With the way he has been coaching recently I think other teams probably like him a lot lol. I personally would like to see the Jets go in a different direction but I guess nobody knows how the players feel. I like to think athletes come to play hard every game no matter what the situation is. I'm really just guessing that they will come to play with some extra motivation with his job maybe or maybe not being on the line in this game.

Man I hope they just come to play. This will be the best game of the year.

I say Miami because of the simple fact that if we win were in, if we lose its going to be alot of coulda, woulda, shoulda for this team.

They need to beat the jets somethign that hasnt been done since what 2005?

The pressure is on us fins and this will show wat kinda team this is. A nice surprise or a legit contender.

The Jets, not even close. Noone expected us to be here. The Jets pumped all this money into FA's. They gave us their QB by bringing in Favre to basically morgage the future. If the Jets lose their is going to be mutiny up there and I wouldn't be suprised if Coles is arrested for beating down Mangina. If we lose, it will suck badly, but won't have the same ramifications on the franchise as if the Jets lose to their most hated rival with their old QB.
