The dearth of talent at tight end didn’t hurt the Dolphins in 2016. However, if the team wants to fully capitalize on the offensive genius of head coach Adam Gase, they would be best served by acquiring some play makers who can exploit matchups against smaller cornerbacks and slower linebackers.

In Gase’s past coaching stops, he has developed talented players at tight end. In his first season as the OC in Denver, he was able to turn Julius Thomas from a player with one career reception into a 65-catch, 788-yard, and 12-touchdown offensive weapon. In Chicago, Gase helped develop Zach Miller. Miller went from four catches for 42 yards to 34 catches for 439 yards and five TDs in 2015.

so I guess OJ Howard it is!

Totally agree with the tight end being a primary need

Totally disagree with the qb assessment...the qb does not process information quickly is tired and lazy

Oj howard takes gases offense to the next level and allows for guys like caroo should stills leave to be integrated into the offense with little to no down side

If that is truly the case as in if thos is Gases desire lwts get him that seam threat.

So let's say we miss out on Howard (as expected) I'm going to bet Gase thinks he can develop a later pick into a good TE based on his coaching and offensive system. The question is in what round can he get that TE (In a good TE draft) that still has enough for Gase to mold? 3rd or 4th round?. It appears the draft is deep defensively so I still think the first two picks will be a combination of LB and DL.

Thats where miami has to be on the draft value aspect of things and get proactive if/when the run comes and it will...the thing is a lot of these guys project more as the h back types given their size and as teams pluck them off it shouldnt move the needle much other than the options would be thinning...i dont think gase will pine for them...not with marquis gray in house

Im sure he also wants a guy that can project as a decent blocker down the line which is gonna limit the options even more...depending on what miami does in free agency these needs could change rather quickly but i would stand by lb and seam tight end are best suited to be found in the draft if you want difference makers

The other thing is if miami does strike out at tight end we can get by with sims and gray and grays development may continue but we wont take that next step until we get that difference maker seam tight end...and in house wise the only guy that has that level upside would be gray even if it seems unlikely

And whether we retain stills or not that need isnt gonna change which is why miami shouldnt overpay for a non mission critical

I have a feeling history is about to repeat itself. In the 2nd rd of the 2012 draft, we passed on Gronk for koa Missi. We could be selecting another lb instead of a TE again?

Love your posts, man...and 48K+ of them (to my 500+...), but HAVE to ask, as I have in multiple other threads...

WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH DION SIMS??? Why can't HE be the TE we've been looking for, especially knowing what Gase can do, and because at this particular point in time our defensive needs are so glaring?

I'm genuinely interested in your, or anyone else's response...

Thanks!!

LB. TE is a luxury at this point in early rounds.

Jordan Cameron is done in Miami and Sims is a free agent so come April the position could easily be on the front office's radar on Day 1 or Day 2

If Howard is there at 22 he will be a Dolphin I'd say.....it is just highly unlikely he will be there.

I favour picking up two linebackers in FA one top player and one solid mlb...if they are reasonable fits.....so that we dont have to go linebacker in the draft

Realistically, our tight end probably come in the 2nd or 3rd round. Pick 22 in the 5th could be too late!......despite the depth.

Leggett and Engram....I've got my eye on you!

How many plays a season do you see from Sims that make you say "wow"? Maybe a few. Sims is relatively limited as an athlete. He's for sure not a seam-buster. Rarely do you see him go up and get a ball at its highest point, like some of the best tight ends in the NFL do. Occasionally he'll break tackles, but his YAC has also been fairly weak. Sims is the kind of guy you want coming off the bench, and is a decent red zone option in a pinch, but if we're talking about an offensive playmaker, Sims isn't it.

Did you see how bad the defense was? If Miami doesn't make a serious commitment to defense in the draft this season this team will suffer a similar fate next year—getting torn a new one in the first round of the playoffs.

The logic behind a top TE is sound but the main priority of this Draft needs to be Defense. We need a big injection of Defensive talent. Resigning Dion Sims would also be a smart move.

Can't force a LB pick if he's not a fit or a good enough player.

If Howard or the guy from the U are there it's gonna be hard to pass them up.

What about Duarte.. Essentially a red shirt season. I think whatever the teams view on him moving forward will determine how Miami attacks the te position in the offseason

We have a few major holes on the roster as I see it, LB, OG, TE, and DE being the top priorities. I hope we won't take a player just to fill the perceived top need, see Juan James. Hopefully the draft plays out where the best player on our board is also one of our need positions, but you still need to take the best player available, within reason of course.
