Hi, I'm writing a paper for college debating the best NFL team of all time. I am comparing the '72 Dolphins, '74 Steelers, '85 Bears, '89 Steelers, '93 Cowboys and '04 Patriots.
I am currently writing an "essay before the essay" called a state of the deabte essay, which discusses what is being said and by whom. Obviously, the "who" are mainly fans of all the teams.

So, why do you, Dolphins fans, think the '72 team is the best NFL team of all time

Simply the fact that they never lost. The greateast team should never lose a game. Its really plain simple.

Yes, but why else. I mean I agree with you, but I need more than just that because luck and circumstances can contribute to going undefeated, so there must be other reasons that make the team the best ever. Groups of coaches, players and their performances.

How about being undefeated and winning a playoff game ON THE ROAD against the STEEL CURTAIN!!!!

They won most of those games without there starting quarterback. That says something about the team in itself.

Well, from your list, the best team sure isn't the 04 Pats so you can cross them off the list.

And what's so special about the '89 Steelers? They won nothing. I assume you meant the '89 49ers, but even there, I liked their 94 team at least as much. There was really no competition for them in 1989.

A case for the '72 team is that they won all of their games.

But if you want to make a case against the '72 Dolphins, it would probably come from LB Nick Buonicontti (sp?) who said that our '73 team was really a better team, though they had two defeats. And if you go by playoff results, he's kind of correct. Miami beat three teams by about a TD or less in '72. The '73 team won by about 17 vs every playoff team.

Just something to consider.

The 71 Dolphins lost SB VI to the Cowboys and only scored 3 points, a superbowl low to this day. I think that loss had an effect on them.

I believe the 72 fins won a SB faster than any other expansion team.

Those are just some facts to maybe help you out.

I might also take a look at who each of these teams defeated in the Superbowl. Did they beat the #1 seed from the opposite conference or did they beat a wildcard team? Such as the 85 Bears beating the wildcard Patriots. That is something that could help your argument as well.

had to win the conference championship on the road in pittsburgh... were the number 1 offense and defense in terms of yardage AND scoring i think... i could be wrong but i think that was the case which is insane...

#1 in offense and #1 in defense

I think the answer is simple, they didn't lose. All the other teams you mentioned had at least one team better than them that season. 72 Dolphins didn't. Regardless of the era, if there has been a better team, why couldn't they beat everyone they played?

Something I never figured out, why were we on the road for that game?
