Why are we not using the shotgun???

Shotgun is an entire package, not a play. Wannstedt thought that putting that in on top of the base offense in Feeley's first start might be overwhelming. Feeley looked like he was having enough trouble with the limited playbook. However, with a week's worth of practice and a full game under his belt, he should be ready to take on more.

They have had since July to get Feeley acclimated to the shotgun, something he did in Philly. Not having it in the repertoire is yet another example of how poorly this team is prepared as to the rest in the NFL. Having no shotgun for AJ was particularly ridiculous, as after the Tenn. game, one could readily see the O-lline had issues.

They havent had since July...... Fiedler was the starter the week before the season and the first week so Feeley didnt get much reps in practice. They were splitting time 50/50 in the preseason also. We had no Oline, no RB, and a QB toss up. I think they probably put more effort into getting those situations straight then worrying about getting Feeley used to the shotgun package. It will be used, but even if we used Shotgun against Cincy, the pressure they were getting would still have happened, it wouldnt have made a difference.

Im just listing the reasons Wanny said for not using it, and for once I see Wanny's points. New QB, New OLine, New RB, they wanted to trim down the playbook. That game was a learning experience for AJ and we actually had a CHANCE to win it.

If they blitz a lot, and I am sure they will, we need to throw some screens and some deep fades. I know Wanny doesn't want INT, and neither do I, but chuck it up there and let Chambers or Booker go get it. Did we throw any screens on Sunday? I think I remember one that lost yards. But there has to be some play that would work to get the LB's to back off.

I disagree with that. Inthe shotgun, you get the ball and you are at your passing point. When you are under center, you have to take your drop back, and you can't really see whats going on downfield till you get back away from the line. The shotgun would've givin him another second (for a total of 1.4 seconds....lol) to throw the ball, and that would've been big.

Wanny said Miami called a LOT of go deep passing plays. AJ just took a LONG time to get through his reads. They were blitzing and running through Wade Smith like he was not there. I agree the shotgun WOULD have given us more time, but AJ was to slow going through his reads and the pressure just was coming on too fast. I dont think it would have helped.

What WOULD have helped is if we did more Max-protection schemes at the end of the game. Im suprised we didnt see more 2 TE sets with McMike on the right side going pass and extra protection on the left to help Smith with blocking.

Gordon did look good catching a few balls out of the backfield so working on more screens for next week is a definate. I think we need to do the OPPOSITE of what we have been doing. We need to come out next week with a bunch of short passes to set up the run. We cant do what we did against Cincy. They shut down our Run IMMEDIATELY in the game and then the passing game never got going except for 1 drive (which should have been picked off and no TD)

We need to pass next week early to set up the run.

Using shotgun would have made a huge difference. The whole point of the shotgun is what--TO GIVE THE QB MORE TIME, AND GET HIM A QUICKER LOOK DOWN THE FIELD. Which is exactly what we needed. You basically are saying the team was such a mess, AJ didn't have time to properly learn the shotgun formations. Which is consistent with what I have been saying--for whatever reason, AJ wasn't as prepared as he should have been. I think we basically agree.

oh we do agree, I think this team should have used the shotgun.... i was just listing the reasons wanny said in his press conference to why and I actually see wanny's points and they are valid. I think we will see it this weekend against the Steelers is we are trailing..... hopefully that wont happen and we can turn it out against the Jets... where we will need TO PASS LONG to keep up with them. I kinda dont want to use it against the steelers therefore the Jets will not have seen it and wont have tapes of us using it......

I read yesterday that Wanny didn't put Feeley in the shotgun because he felt that with it being his first start and with the loud away crowd it wouldn't be the best thing for him. The shotgun will be back this week against the Steelers.
