It has been a complete disaster since our Holy Father The Don Shula was forced out. 2 AFC Title appearances and a whole lot of nothing in almost 2 decades since Shula left.

  1. 1996-1999: Jimmy Johnson - Accomplished zero for us - 36W-28L
  2. 2000-2004: Dave "The Mustache" Wannstedt - 42W-31L and 1 AFC East Division Championship in 2000 (Seems like a Bill Belichick type of coach when you look back at all the other trash )
  3. 2004: Jim Bates (Interim Coach) - 3W-4L
  4. 2005-2006: Nick Satan - 15W-17L - Completely screwed us on the way out, including the chance for Brees (insert 40 doctors said no to Brees argument here)
  5. 2007: Cam Cameron - 1W-15L - Ugh I try to just forget this season ever happened
  6. 2008-2011:Tony Sparano Morano - 29W-32L - 1 AFC East Division Championship in 2008 - Seems so long ago...That was a great first season :(. Was at that Ravens vs. Dolphins Wild Card Game. We got completely smashed to the tune of 27-9 in favor of the Ravens of course. I still remember reading articles about the Dolphins going deep. After all, they did win 9 out of the last 10 games. "New Attitude, leadership have the Dolphins confident heading into the playoffs"
  7. 2001: Todd Bowles (Interim Coach) - 2W-1L - We should having him a chance. The players really loved this guy. See the Jets this season.
  8. 2012-2015: Joe "Failbin Queezy" Philbin - 23W-25L - Personally, I think this is the worst coach we've ever had, including Cam Cameron's disastrous season.

Smh, haters are really coming out of woodwork

Someone cursed the Phins somewhere. There's no other explanation.

If that's the case then I suggest that instead of a flying banner over the stadium that everyone is talking about, we should instead all chip in money to bring in some very high Santeria priests from Haiti and Cuba to remove any and all curses from the Miami Dolphins Football Team.

We had a chance to land a good head coach in Todd Bowles but we passed on him for Joe Philbin a hire alot of fans shockingly liked.

We had one. He messed up on his qb and ran away

Here come all the "I wanted us to keep Todd Bowles" hindsight 20/20, I'm never wrong, look at me posters.

Great topic.

I don't think there are a lot of horrible coaches on that list, outside of Cam Cameron, that was a huge mistake that pretty much anyone could see coming. I think a lot of it has to do with fit.

Jimmy Johnson was a great coach, but he had lost some of the passion in his time away and I think other organizations had caught up to his methods. Wannstedt's a better coach than people give him credit for ... but he had couple of things working against him: 1, He's actually too nice a guy, and not a natural head coach (you can't contrive things like a lobster trap and use it to try to motivate grown men); 2, He was so good as a coordinator that expectations were enormously high that he would be a top-level head coach.

Saban obviously is an outstanding coach, but he never mastered dealing with grown men, either. He didn't want to take the time to improve that aspect of his coaching and saw college as a place where he'd get almost unquestioned respect, so he went back to college.

Cameron never should have been given the job. That was ownership's fault. It was a lazy hire that made no sense.

I think Sparano was outdone more by personnel than by coaching. I remember when he, Parcells and Ireland came in, and one of the big things they had going for them was a solid plan for how to succeed. When Parcells influence waned and they drafted a situational running QB in the second round of their second draft, they seemed to be trying to play catch-up with the roster the rest of the way. Each reach led to an even bigger reach, and that spelled doom for Sparano.

I think Philbin is like a lesser Wannstedt. Seems like a good guy. Doesn't seem like a leader of men, IMO. I think the fact that his teams come out consistently flat and finish so poorly tells you what you need to know about him ... you can say millionaire players shouldn't need to be inspired, but actually those guys might require it as much as anyone because they have so many of the things they already want or need. You need to be able to push their buttons or have guys on the staff and team that can do it. Philbin seems to shy away from having players with strong personalities on his teams for whatever reason, but that also limits what you can do from a talent standpoint. You can make a team of 50 Vince Papales or Larry Izzos, but it's only going to go so far.

I thought Bates and Bowles both would have been excellent head coaches. I thought they seemed to inspire loyalty from their players. They were tough and no-nonsense, a lot like Don Shula. But Miami is a flashy town, and I think our owners over the years have succumbed to wanting to make a splashy move instead of the better longterm hire. I honestly thought Bates or Bowles could have done very well here with competent player personnel decisions and a management team that would have worked with them.

IMO, they get credit for hiring Jimmy and Saban. I hated the Saban hiring but I was biased to begin with. In hindsight they didn't work out well but at least they attempted to make a good choice. The rest were uninspiring from the moment they signed the contract.

Too many that this was their first HC job. If Joe fails I want someone that's done it before. Either won a SB or was deep in the playoffs a few times.

No more on the job training.
