This is the best thought out argument as to why he is going to Dallas. Enjoy.
----------
Don't know why anyone is denying it...
Based on what's explicitly been said, I see almost no scenario this off-season that doesn't bring Darren McFadden to Dallas. That's right, folks, I'm predicting it, or just paying attention & pronouncing it, as pretty much a sure thing. Because the tea-leaves certainly read in that direction.
First, we have Stephen Jones' impromptu chortle during last year's draft, immediately after Dallas acquired Cleveland's first-round pick for this season:
"That could be McFadden, dad!" -- he was heard cooing from the War Room.
So, if you question how aware the Joneses have been of Mr. McFadden since well before this Combine began, I'd point you to the unscripted exuberance displayed by the younger Jones last year. It belies where their attention has been for some time. Though, of course, that alone wouldn't serve as evidence enough.
But then you have Jerry's open statements, which began almost immediately after the playoff loss to the Giants, that he feels it is imperative for him to bring in a 'WOW' player on offense for this season. He said, now that we've found our quarterback in Tony Romo he believes his job is to surround him with weapons. That's what we did with Troy Aikman, Jerry alludes, and we all saw how that worked with him.
(and as you likely know by now, that term 'WOW' player has been mentioned a lot)
The next time it was mentioned was leading up to the combine, where he states that the Cowboys have two first-round picks, he wants to add a 'WOW' player on offense, and he thinks they'll be able to get something done. In fact, Jerry has gone so far recently at the combine as saying: "I think we have a chance to put some more 'WOW' in this offense. That's my No. 1 goal in this off-season."
(Am I the only one sensing a theme here?)
Now, of course, he's playing it somewhat close to the vest, though I think a little logic tips his hand quite apparently. He's tried to sway us away from thinking of a trade-up, stating that there's been absolutely no discussion with anyone about moving up into that 1-2-or-3 position in the draft. *ahem* Which conveniently leaves out the #4 slot, which his good buddy Al Davis is occupying; and after guaranteeing a whopping $32-million to Jamarcus Russell last season, and having still many holes to fill on a rather bland Raiders team, would likely be one of the more interested parties in the league in acquiring a greater number of "cheaper" first-round picks -- along with whatever else it might require to appease such a move.
And if you'll remember, Jerry also said before last year's draft (fueling speculation preemptively) he learned from his time in the 90's that when he has a team without many holes, a team capable of competing for a Championship (and after being 13-3 & sweeping the eventual Superbowl Champions during the regular season, don'tcha know that's how he sees this Cowboys team now), he found that it was better to package picks to move up and select an "impact player"... than it was to trade down or stay put and wind up with middle-of-the-roaders.
And while Anthony Spencer looks to be a good one, do you think he might grade some of our more recent late-round-firsts as maybe even worse than "middle-of-the-road" players? Do you think Jerry would swap a Marcus Spears and a Bobby Carpenter for Darren McFadden right now? Um, yeah. I think he would. I think you would. I know I would.
And so, as I said, the tea-leaves seem to be pointing in a particular direction. I don't think Marion Barber's going anywhere. Jerry is not a fool. But if you pay attention to what he's said again & again:
'WOW' player on offense -- two first-round picks -- No. 1 goal in this off-season
.... then I think it becomes clear what's on Mr. Jones' mind.
Because what other 'WOW' player do you see in this draft or free-agency?
Who else would even legitimately qualify wearing that term?
Darren McFadden is gonna be a Cowboy in April.
