This is the best thought out argument as to why he is going to Dallas. Enjoy.

----------

Don't know why anyone is denying it...

Based on what's explicitly been said, I see almost no scenario this off-season that doesn't bring Darren McFadden to Dallas. That's right, folks, I'm predicting it, or just paying attention & pronouncing it, as pretty much a sure thing. Because the tea-leaves certainly read in that direction.

First, we have Stephen Jones' impromptu chortle during last year's draft, immediately after Dallas acquired Cleveland's first-round pick for this season:

"That could be McFadden, dad!" -- he was heard cooing from the War Room.

So, if you question how aware the Joneses have been of Mr. McFadden since well before this Combine began, I'd point you to the unscripted exuberance displayed by the younger Jones last year. It belies where their attention has been for some time. Though, of course, that alone wouldn't serve as evidence enough.

But then you have Jerry's open statements, which began almost immediately after the playoff loss to the Giants, that he feels it is imperative for him to bring in a 'WOW' player on offense for this season. He said, now that we've found our quarterback in Tony Romo he believes his job is to surround him with weapons. That's what we did with Troy Aikman, Jerry alludes, and we all saw how that worked with him.

(and as you likely know by now, that term 'WOW' player has been mentioned a lot)

The next time it was mentioned was leading up to the combine, where he states that the Cowboys have two first-round picks, he wants to add a 'WOW' player on offense, and he thinks they'll be able to get something done. In fact, Jerry has gone so far recently at the combine as saying: "I think we have a chance to put some more 'WOW' in this offense. That's my No. 1 goal in this off-season."

(Am I the only one sensing a theme here?)

Now, of course, he's playing it somewhat close to the vest, though I think a little logic tips his hand quite apparently. He's tried to sway us away from thinking of a trade-up, stating that there's been absolutely no discussion with anyone about moving up into that 1-2-or-3 position in the draft. *ahem* Which conveniently leaves out the #4 slot, which his good buddy Al Davis is occupying; and after guaranteeing a whopping $32-million to Jamarcus Russell last season, and having still many holes to fill on a rather bland Raiders team, would likely be one of the more interested parties in the league in acquiring a greater number of "cheaper" first-round picks -- along with whatever else it might require to appease such a move.

And if you'll remember, Jerry also said before last year's draft (fueling speculation preemptively) he learned from his time in the 90's that when he has a team without many holes, a team capable of competing for a Championship (and after being 13-3 & sweeping the eventual Superbowl Champions during the regular season, don'tcha know that's how he sees this Cowboys team now), he found that it was better to package picks to move up and select an "impact player"... than it was to trade down or stay put and wind up with middle-of-the-roaders.

And while Anthony Spencer looks to be a good one, do you think he might grade some of our more recent late-round-firsts as maybe even worse than "middle-of-the-road" players? Do you think Jerry would swap a Marcus Spears and a Bobby Carpenter for Darren McFadden right now? Um, yeah. I think he would. I think you would. I know I would.

And so, as I said, the tea-leaves seem to be pointing in a particular direction. I don't think Marion Barber's going anywhere. Jerry is not a fool. But if you pay attention to what he's said again & again:

'WOW' player on offense -- two first-round picks -- No. 1 goal in this off-season

.... then I think it becomes clear what's on Mr. Jones' mind.

Because what other 'WOW' player do you see in this draft or free-agency?

Who else would even legitimately qualify wearing that term?

Darren McFadden is gonna be a Cowboy in April.

I agree...but McFadden thru the draft and Moss by free agency...then you can say WOW!

But the trade won't be from the Raiders to Dallas it will be from the Dolphins to the Cowboys.

They won't trade with us. They don't need to. The only reason Jones would do it with us is if, in terms of value, we demanded what the 3rd or 4th pick would cost.

He knows we're not taking DMC. He knows St. Louis isn't either. Atlanta is the only wild card here. Is their love affair with Ryan a smokescreen for the new franchise face that is going to fill the seats again in Hotlanta? That's probably what keeps Jones up at night - does he need to jump Atlanta or not? If he decides they are a legitimate risk to take DMC, he may consider a trade with us. Otherwise, I imagine it will get done with the Raiders.

Wow, I didn't think that old fool was crazy enough to try it, but it sounds like he might. I can see us getting both their first rounders and a player or something.

Interesting read. Thanks.

If we are to believe that Jerry Jones is truly infatuated with McFadden, the only way he can absolutely be sure to get him is to acquire the #1 overall.

He can go get pick #4, but he's rolling the dice that he'll still be there.

He could wait until the #4 is on the clock to do the trade, but again, that is no guarantee for him.

Great read!
I'm still not sold on the fact that they will trade for the #1 spot for a few reasons. 1) I'm sure he doesn't feel he has to in order to get him; 2) a slightly later pick would be much cheaper; 3) trading up to the #3 spot won't cost him as much and he won't have to defend it to Dallas fans as much as he would for the #1 (not that he really cares that much what Dallas fans say).
I really see him going after the #3 pick. He knows the #4 pick with Oak sitting there is a big threat and Atlanta at #3 is a moderate risk. If they stay there, will they pick Ryan (if available) or DMac ? Or would they trade out with someone else who wants that pick ? I think he would feel a LOT better if Atlanta either traded up with us to get Ryan at #1 and we had the #3 pick. We'd be much more likely to talk trade with Dallas than most teams and we'd have the most needs to do so. So I agree he wants to move up to get DMac, but he's trying to figure out a way to get a bargain (not sell the farm)in the process. Either way, we are sitting in a good spot right now and hopefully BP and company take full advantage of this.

...and you know how Jerry loves to dominate the camera. I can just see his smiling face standing next to mcfadden in NY.

the dude did say he was not going trade up before...but that was before Mcfadden ran a 4.33 and showed his ball handling skills out of the backfield and cutting upfield.

yeah, I can see the trade actually happening. We get spears/Carpenter and both #1's.

Good read but I would like to point out that he doesnt have to trade up to the No 1 spot because its unlikely we will draft another RB that high .

The smokescreen that seems to be gathering momentum is that we will be drafting Ryan and that could present some opportunities for a tradedown with teams like Atlanta and others in need of a QB .

Next year does not look like a good year to draft a QB so any team in need a franchise QB....even though I dont think Ryan is one........will have to make their move this year.

He could go to the 5th pick...with us trading with K.C. after Atlanta. K.C. needs a OT...big time...they could get that at the 3rd pick after we trade with Atlanta...so they get Ryan.

Uh oh now you got my mind spinning Crunch.....

Okay here we go!

-Trade #1 overall for #3 overall & #48 overall(from Hou)
-Trade #3 overall for ##22 & #28 and maybe a 3rd in 09.

That gives us a great oppurtunity to tkae advantage of a DEEP draft..

Unlikely, I know but A guy can dream right?

Don Banks' latest Mock Draft on CNNSI.com has the Patriots trading down with Dallas.

If Miami really believes that Jerry Jones will undoubtedly trade up for Darren McFadden and that he's looking to trade up to pick 3 or 4 rather than dealing with the Dolphins, I'd play a serious game of poker on draft day.

Pick up the phone as soon as the 10 minute clock starts rolling and tell Jones that, while you'd prefer to trade down to acquire more picks, you're taking McFadden since no trade materialized. Doing so will put him under pressure to either A) call your bluff and risk losing McFadden or (B) surrender more value than he originally wanted to.

If he doesn't deal, you draft whomever you really want. However, something tells me Jones is so hard up for McFadden that, if you play the hand correctly, you will eventually rake in the chips.
