Why is it that Auburn judged that Carnell ''Cadillac'' Williams could run the football better than Ronnie Brown?

What do we see that Auburn didnt see?

what? when did they do that?

ronnie and caddy are two different guys for two different occasions in football. Caddy is more like a warrick dunn, and Ronnie is more like a Shaun Alexander...

I wondered that myself. That and why they had a two back system. Go easy on me with the replies, the only college football games I have ever seen were last years Syracuse/ Temple game and Saban's bowl game, so I know nothing about any college players or systems...

Well let Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville explain it...

He evidently has much better hands, as Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville explained in clearing up the other matter of why Brown played behind Williams at Auburn. Tuberville gave the game plan against Tennessee.

"We wanted to get the ball to Ronnie out of the backfield, whether it was short passes or deep passes, and then of course we ran the ball with him," Tuberville said. "That is the reason Ronnie was not the starter. Carnell was more of the run guy on first down, and then if we needed to run or throw it, Ronnie Brown was in there on second or third down because we could do so many more things with him."

Cadillac is probaply the better runner of the 2 to be honest. Brown is more versatile and thats the main reason NFL teams like him so much. Cadillac is as shifty as they come and a hard runner with great vision. Brown is a good power runner not as shifty as they come, but can be used all over the field and has ideal size and speed.

Caddy is the better pure runner, plus Ronnie has exquisite hands so they put him at WR quite a bit. That way they could utilize both players at the same time

Heath Evans said it was because Caddy was the golden prospect and Ronnie Brown was just a guy who improved a lot and they didn't expect much out of

Think of Ronnie Brown as a Thurman Thomas clone. Very, very good runner, but equally or even more dangerous as a receiver. Other backs may be considered "great" runners, but dont present the full package that Brown does.
Now, if you are running conservative Wannyball, then you obviously go for the great, traditional power running back. Benson or Williams would fit that bill nicely. However, in a more aggressive offense a more complete back is far more valuable.

This should sum it up from someone who actually watched Auburn play a lot last year which it clearly sounds like a lot of you didn't. Not trying to knock anyone but here is the real deal.

Auburn played a lot of 2-3 wideout sets on first and second down to spread the field to either give Caddy open space to run or for Campbell to roll out and look for plays down the field. Brown was used most often in tight down and distance situations but was used quite often in the passing game catching screens or occasionally lining up in the slot to get a mismatch with a LB.

Furthermore, looking back a few years ago, Tubberville realized the prospect that Brown might transfer to Georgia early in his Auburn career because he wasn't happy with how he was used so after a few injuries to other players, he figured out a way to keep him happy along with Caddy. Looks like it turned out ok for both players and hopefully us.

The thing you need to think about here unlike Greg Cote is that both Caddy and Brown were unselfish and accepted their roles. Last year Brown would have been a stud every down RB for any other team in the country except for the one he played on and maybe Texas since Benson was clearly in the drivers seat from the time he arrived. Brown will do very well for us.
