Why did Joe Theismann go to the CFL instead of playing for the Dolphins?

Because he's an idiot?

Seriously though, I don't know the answer, althought I'm sure someone on here will.

I am pretty sure it was because he was not happy with the contract he was offered. I am guessing since Miami drafted him, they had control over him being able to go to another team. So ol' Joe decided to skip town to Canada.

Found this in an article on the net:

Although he was drafted out of Notre Dame to play for the Miami Dolphins, a contract dispute prompted him instead to pick the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League. He played there in 1971, '72, and '73. Miami, meanwhile, went on to the Super Bowl three straight years, losing in '72 and winning in '73 and '74, leaving Theismann and millions of other people wondering why he had taken such a hard line with the Miami organization.

I think we drafted him in the fourth round. I'll bet he felt real good after spurning us and then we went to 3 straight Super Bowls!! What an idiot! Of course he probably feels vindicated, because he did throw 2 TD's and beat us in a Super Bowl!

If I'm not mistaken, I know he was drafted in the third round I believe and he knew he couldn't break into the starting lineup. He was behind a HOF QB in Bob Griese. Then he proved himself and went to the Redskins.

I do believe this is the case.

Wow.........two strikingly different accounts of why........... I wish there was somebody who ACTUALLY knew........

Sounds about right to me, Would also explain alot about why he's not to fond of the Dolpins and so hard on Ricky. He sould really think about trying to lighten up.

Go Dolphins

Maybe Joey needs to rethink what he said about Ricky............

If Ricky is such a bad person and doing all these bad things, then why is he not in jail? Maybe Joey needs to rip the NFL and not Ricky for letting him play in 2007.

How can someone rip a person for living thier own life. Ricky is doing what he wants to do. Whos fault is it really for letting Ricky play?

Joey just needs to mind his own business.

The Dolphins drafted him with the 21st pick in the 4th round in the 1971 NFL draft.

I don't remember the Dolphins having a great record in 1970...which, wasn't that Shula's first year as head coach with Miami? I can't remember when George Wilson left. We had picked Griese in the 1st round of the 1967 draft.

George Wilson coached the Dolphins from 1966-1969, also coach Wilson had a son that played for the Dolphins, can you name him or name the postion he played?

He was George, too. Played QB.

That would be George Wilson Jr. He was our first QB If I'm not mistaken.

ck, I believe the Don took over a 3-10-1 team and in his first year ('70) we were 10-4 and made the PO... Shula was the MAN!

While George Wilson didn't fair too well as a coach here, he did bring in about half the firepower that coach Shula used to win. Coach Shula came to a team loaded with talent.
