i have a problem with why saban would have testified at ricky's hearing. the hearing was to determine whether or not the positive test that ricky had was a violation of the substance abuse policy or not. could saban really have anything to say about this? i would think that the only reason saban would testify would be to say that he does not think that ricky has been using, and possibly as a character witness to the hard work that ricky has put in to get himself back on track in the league.

nick saban, despite how highly we all think of him, cannot speak intelligently about the chemical makeup of the substance that ricky tested positive for. and as far as i know, that is what the appeal is based on, that the substance he tested positive for was not a violation of the policy. the people who need to be testifying on his behalf are scientists.

this leads me to two possible conclusions.

1. the defense has no foot to stand on as far as the failed test and the appeal will be based on the fact that ricky has tried very hard to get back to where he was and they brought saban in to attest to that fact. or...

2. they have a case for the failed test and saban is only there to say that he does not think that ricky has been using any illegal substances. thus, solidifying their case with the full support of the head coach.

so your two conclusions are 1) the don't have a case or 2) the have a case??

Were you watching Matlock again last night?

2 reasons

1) Character witness.

2) Saban shows he will stand behind his players.

I opt for option 2. They couldn't even determine what the substance was. And with Ricky studying hollistic medicine, I wouldn't be surprised if he takes herbs for ailments and what not.

You just answered a part of the reason(s) for Saban testifying for RW.
There is also the question of who leaked what when. This could really blow up in the NFL's face if Ricky is suspended so they want to gather as much information from as many different sources as they can.

yea, there are two conclusions. one is good and one is bad, that's usually the way things work. i hope that they have a case and saban is only showing solidarity. but he could have done that through the media and not testified. i'm just saying i hope they aren't basing their case on the A+ report card that saban gave ricky. i don't know about anybody else, but i didn't hear about anyone else testifying at the hearing? like a scientist? probably because of the confidentiality, but i haven't heard anything.

Besides the obvious which appears to be missed in your post, what message do you think would be sent to the NFL and the team had he not testified?

Gotcha. But it did last 9 freggin hours. Odds are a scientist or two testified about the testing procedures, the results, and various substances.

Either that or it was just a damn long bong session. And they just THOUGHT Nick called. Ricky kept asking them, 'do you here the phone ringing?'

saban has been pretty vocal about his support for ricky in the press. i highly doubt that there is any question that he supports him.

Thank you PAFINFAN090, I understand and appreciate your insight. It seems that most likely he would be only a character witness and they are using him to say that RW was not trying to intentionally use a substance to increase his performance and knowingly undermine the abuse policy.

The problem is Ricky has probably tested positive for an unrelated substance. And due to his background in Ayerveda and Holistic Medicine; it is quite possible to be an herbal product that may have a crosssensitivity with the testing. According to strict policy a positive test is a positive test and he should be banned. But you have to take into account his lifestyle and his effort. He has been a model player, model citizen and positive role model. He is tested multiple times per week and has had one positive.

It's a tricky situation. Obviously I think he should be cleared.

But that doesn't mean s+++

Couldn't agree more.
