Now this isnt a bail on Daunte thread.... But listening to 790 LeBatard read an email that talk about us picking up Joey, to be a reliable veteran QB until Daunte was healthy enough to be comptetitive... and perhaps the Duante we've come to expect.
Now I bring this up because this is why we brought Harrington here. have him start the season... and gently ease Daunte back. Now Buffalos defenders have said that Daunte is obviously isnt his old self. His injury is pbviously affecting him.
Also Harrington looked more in sync in the preseason. Should we have started the season with Joey, and held Daunte back a few weeks and allowed his knee to gather strength.. and his confidence to grow in it. Thoughts? (Remember this isnt a yank Cpep thread!)

Ya know Canadian, I really don't have those answers. This is becomming an extremelly complex situation. It is WAY too early to yank Culpepper at this point and to me, it doesn't seem like his knee is the problem. The two problems are protection and decision making. At the time, I think Saban figured Daunte wouldn't be ready as early as he was and planned on at least having Joey run through training camp with the first team. It's also imperative to have a good backup in today's NFL. We just have to wait and see what the following weeks will bring.

We got Harrington because Frerotte left with Linehan to St. Louis, and it was either Harrington, Maddox, or someone else. Harrington was the best choice available.

we got harrington to be a back up.. not because if Frerotte or sage.. But Daunte isnt healthy. The bills said flat out he isnt healthy. he couldnt outrun massive Olineman. Cmon...He may need to realistically rest his knee. he needs to regain his mobility which is one of the hallmarks of his career.

we will probably only see harrington if Daunte plays a couple more bad games...too much time, money, and energy has been invested in him to give up on him just yet...plus he wasn't that bad...the oline should take most of the blame!

well obivously saban wanted to trade for joey before he became a free agent for a reason? maybe in college hes seen talent in him, he knows he can throw,
and he got 2 qb's that can play saban said well im taking a 50-50 chance.

and joey is young still, i dont know we need to ask nick.

I agree canadian, Icant figure it out myself.

i believe Daunte may need to rest that knee... strengthen it a little more for game action... It's one thing to practise.. its another to play a game.

We got Joey as insurance. In case Daunte didn't pan out. In case he wasn't fully recovered from his injury. Or he went down again in the season. We got Joey because despite his career numbers, he's got upside, and still has potential to be a good QB in the league. And most of all, because he's healthy, and he's been a starter his whole career. I think Joey, just as much as Daunte, wants to get his shot in Miami to show what he can do.

Cleveland wanted Harrington as a starter and was offering more money. Harrington wanted to come here, but that wasn't a guarantee he wouldn't have taken the Cleveland job, so Saban gave up a conditional draft pick.

re:

I wish the QB situation would have been a "Let the Best Man Win" scenario rather than just having Daunte being given the job based on prior performance. I think Harrington is hungrier to succeed than Daunte. He's also not coming off MAJOR knee reconstruction. Plus, at worst, if he started the next two games, he would only post the EXACT same record as Daunte has. Even during last season, I advocated going after Harrington, and when we got him, I was thrilled. Because, and I know people don't agree with me, but I think he's our QB of the future. I see a lot of potential in him, and surrounded by a team like this, I think he could get us to the playoffs. Playing a not 100% Daunte will only get us a Top 15 Draft pick.

... Prior performance IS the "let the best man win" scenario.

I really like Joey. That's why i'm lobbying for us to start him. I liked watching him in Detroit. He never had many weapons to work with. And Despite his career numbers which aren't very good, just watching him makes me think he has potential to be great. He always looks confident, confident in the pocket and in his throws. He has a very strong arm, and can be very accurate. His whole problem is inconsistancy. But how much of that has to do with the fact that he played his whole career with the Lions?

I feel the same way you do bro. I'm tired of this wait and see crap. I'm confident that Harrington could be no worse than Daunte's played. I'm even more confident that he would play better than DC has thus far.

I'm actually freakin' tired of all these Daunte apologists telling me that he is our future, and i'm not a real fan if I don't support him.

I'm no doctor, but I think it's probably a very bad thing indeed if the knee isn't ready to go. I think most of the healing is probably done.

If so, that makes this a mental thing. To be able to play at a high level in this league, he has to trust that knee to run on it, to take a hit, and to hold up as he firmly plants his foot.

You remember all the talk about how it was better to have a guy with a knee problem at QB than a guy with a shoulder problem? I certainly hope that wasn't Saban talking because the truth of the matter is that you really can't have a problem either place in order to be an effective QB. The mechanics of throwing a football like a QB has to involves the entire body.

It seems to me that either Culpepper needs to settle the hell down and trust his knee or else he's destined to be benched sooner or later in favor of Joey. It's really his choice.
