Why did we stand pat at TE?

Every year it's the same. I'm optimistic that we will pick up a quality TE in the draft or free agency, but it doesn't happen. I really hope Charles Clay pans out as a H-back, but I don't understand the reticence to seek a quality #1 TE. The success of New England's decision to draft both Hernandez and Grodkowski in the same draft is there for everyone to see.
In the same way that Bill Parcells formulated rules that draft QBs have to have 4 years experience in college, above a certain height and weight, etc. Did Big Tuna also set rules not to draft or recruit big pass catching TEs? It seems like they value the blocking part of the role a lot more than the pass catching part.

nubs never picked u as a penn st fan.
just how many teams have a true #1 TE

I love that this thread asks a legitimate question though gently critical of the team that should stir discussion and someone immediately rushes to rate it 1 star.

The reason is daboll. He likes to spread it. Clay will be like Faulk in NE. He will be a 3rd down guy who no one pays attention to as they try to cover 4 WR's, two of which are going deep.

one play i love is when HB stays back to chip block and then turns around for a great screen play. Lets hope the kid knows where the marker is.

Dude, I'm not sayin that these guys CANT pan out, but yr talking about very late rd picks and udfas... Do you REALLY expect them to have anything more than a marginal impact this year? Miller would have been a hige upgrade from day 1. Imo we really dropped the ball on that 1.

Shannon Sharpe was a 7th rd pick. Clay was a late rd pick simply because he played multiple positions in college so he didn't fit the traditional TE role. That doesn't mean his skill set as a receiver at the TE position can't be utilized in a productive manner. There are several reasons why some guys are drafted late and it doesn't always have to do with talent. Sometimes its because they don't have prototypical measurables (Zach Thomas) or they haven't played full time at a particular position and their roles are projected.

Only guy I would have wanted is Zach Miller. He got way to much money in my opinion.

IMO there was no immediate need to upgrade our TE. It was a need kinda. But the FO did a good job addressing other needs. We may not have liked the signings they made, bt they made the signings that will work for the type of offense they want to run. Braylon Edwards and Bradshaw are not really WCO guys. I could be wrong. However, Bush is. So keeping it in perspective, the TE'S we have right now, could be upgraded but should be fine for our offense
