Why did we take Roth?

Damn, even Larry Chester will be 30 this year. We definitely needed some youth on defense - mission accomplished:

DT/DE: Vickerson
DE/LB: Roth

LB: Crowder

DB/S: Daniels

Someone else already made the point that most of our D-linemen are right around thirty. Here's something else to think about. Wanny and Speilman allowed our O-line to get old and then last year all of a sudden they were all too old; (Wade notwithstanding), they were cut and never signed by anyone else either. The lines on both side of the ball take so much punishment you can't afford to neglect them.
All that said I love that Saban was able to pick Roth. The guy is a bada$$ and we should have a fierce front 7 this next season.

"Roth had no way of knowing Saban would be his future boss when he spoke to more than 10,000 fans at a Hawkeye Huddle on Dec. 30. The all-American from Villa Park, Ill., told the crowd he had two words for LSU - then raised his arms and raised both middle fingers."
"I would imagine even though Matt's shenanigans may have been perceived negatively by some, coach Saban probably laughed and said, 'This is my kind of guy,' " said Joe Flanagan, Roth's agent.

One word...attitude! Our defense hopefully just got one.

All three of those guys are about 30 years old.

Plus, there's a great chance that this guy will end up being a LB in a 3-4 type scheme. Think "Mike Vrabel".

Exactly, Roth played two years of linebacker, and also played all over the d-line in college. He was also a wrestling champ in high school. But the point is four of the Pat linebackers have experience playing both linebacker and defensive line.

OH&S- i agree with your assessment exactly... this guy seems like a patriots type of guy, and since Bellichick and Saban are similar, its no suprise we've taken the same type of player.

He will be converted into a LB for our 3-4 Hybrid
