If Ronnie Brown was the player Saban truly wanted, why did we try to trade down from #2 overall? Why did we go so far as to tell Braylon Edwards we'd be drafting him?

I was concerned during the draft that our attempts to trade down would have an impact on Brown's confidence. How can you come away from the draft feeling like the team that got you really targeted YOU when they tried to trade down and weren't successful?

It had more of the flavor of "settling" on Ronnie Brown than TARGETING him and not letting him slip away. Compare that with the rest of the top-5 picks. I don't think any of them got that impression from their teams. Alex Smith knows he's wanted in SF, for example. Cadillac knows he's wanted in TB.

Then throw in the hold-out -- that could factor into this too. Not only did we want to trade down and get somebody else, we didn't want to PAY you what you initially wanted either!

Its a conspiracy!!!!!

Give it a rest already. Why do so many people try to find things wrong with the team their supposedly a fan of?

OK that's real useful.

If we were really interested in Braylon Edwards, why didnt we just pick him at #2?

We dont know if he wanted Brown all along. He tried to trade down, it didnt work out. Saban went with BPA and we got Brown.

We weren't interested in Edwards -- we were baiting him to get teams to trade up to get him.

But that's my point -- most top-5 picks come away feeling like the team they're on TARGETED them. Ronnie Brown's on a team that tried to trade down. He can easily say, "the Dolphins SETTLED on me." Alex Smith can't say that.

I think the plan was to trade down to pick 5 or 7 or so and potentially get Ronnie there..

you want the most value out of a pick, whether that value is ronnie brown, or 2 other first rounders... it was seeing what offers we would get and if any would be worth it... whats wrong with contemplating all options?

The speculation was that we were trying to trick Cleveland, who wanted Edwards, to give up a pick to move up to our spot, while we still got Brown with their #3 pick. When that failed, we took the player that Saban had rated highest, Brown.

We wanted to trade down from the 2nd we got the pick. Many quality RB's were in the draft and being at #2 means you get to pay yours the most. Getting the #2 is the worst you don't get the marquee draft guy (#1 pick) yet half to pay out the *** still for #2. Since we couldn't get equal value back for #2 to start with tried to put out feelers like we will take Edwards or Benson to see if someone wanted to switch spots with us and give us value for moving down. The Vikings duped us into believing they would select Carey so we gave up a 4th to get him even though they would have left Carey on the board had we selected Wilfork. Instead they get an extra 4th for being sneaky and duping Speilman which turned out to be Melede Moore.

OK now THAT makes me feel better. If we truly targeted Brown and just wanted him at #3 overall with a pick or two thrown in, that's a different story. If we were looking for offers from any and everybody, however, then I'm still stuck wondering about the impact of that on Brown.

About as useful as this thread. Another armchair GM. Do you really think anyone on this site knew what Saban's draft strategy was?

But what you're implying is that the Dolphins thought Brown wasn't worth #2 overall money. That still concerns me.
