I don't normally post, but I lurk quite often and have been a fan for 25 plus years, and I just don't understand this way of thinking. Why do many here feel we don't need a quarterback? I'm not saying I was a Ryan fan, but many seem to dismiss that as of today, the team does not have anyone who has had success in the NFL. Not saying Beck won't be good or that McCown won't figure it out, but here is a thought: What if Beck sucks and McCown is what he is? Then what do you have? This team has gone too long without a QB worthy of starting in the NFL, and should be drafting one every year until they find one, whether it is the 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc.. round.

glad your not GM, you do know there are other positions then QB right?

Yes, and I am also aware of the most important position in football. Maybe you are misunderstanding what I am saying. I'm not implying that we take one in round 2, 3, 4, but just that we need one and if one of the 2 unproven players we already have don't work out, they will be set back even further. Finding a good starting QB is hard, but even harder if you don't ever pick one.

QB is probably the most important position on the field, which happens to be our biggest question mark. I'm not saying we should reach on a QB, but if Brian Brohm (for example) is there at #32, chances are he's the bpa, and you have to take him. It would be foolish to pass up a potentially very good QB, because "we already have Beck".

I think a lot of the younger fans of this team don't have the same perspective as older fans who watched us pick two hall of fame quarterbacks in round 1, and the positive impact it had on this team.

When we had first round quarterbacking, this team played in 5 out of the first 19 Superbowls, 7 AFC Championship games and was a constant playoff contender.

We all know whats happened since 2000.

And do you know how different the last 8 years would have been if we had drafted Drew Brees instead of Jamar Fletcher?

No one is saying spend EVERY pick on a quarterback, we are saying when you don't have proven QB's on your roster, and you have a chance to get a nice prospect you really like.....you take it.

the best explanation I've heard from people is that we have two young QB's on the roster already and a 3rd would just muddy the waters. I don't agree, but at least it's a valid reason if you buy into it.

I don't agree with it because I think that McCown already has shown what he is....an okay backup or below average starter in a pinch. Beck is the young unknown, but we need an alternative. I don't want to jump at the 1st okay QB we see.....but am all for it if there is value at QB when we are on the clock.

well the thinking is we need a lot more than just a QB on this team... we need lots of positions... now we already have an unknown 2nd round pick QB on this roster... so basically are we going to take one every year unless they become superstars their rookie year?

of course Beck is an unknown, but so would whoever we pick up... why not sure up other positions that we still need help with and see if Beck pans out, if he doesn't show signs, then next year we can grab someone...

but using another 2nd when we have a 2nd rounder already ready to go is overkill... what do we do next year if Beck flops and the other QB doesn't show anything? draft another one next year? when does it stop when we find another Marino or Rothlisberger who will dominate as a rookie? thats not realistic...

now i have no problem taking a QB, but i dont see it as a high need, i dont think we should reach, or trade up or anything like that... if a good prospect falls into our laps somewhere we should grab him...

but dont pass up another position where a stud is staring you in the face to take a QB out of unneeded desperation

"After the coach, the person who has the chance to wield the second-greatest amount of power on a football team is the quarterback," Phil Simms says. "…there is no one else who has more influence on his team's fortunes than the guy handling the ball all the time. Everything he does -- his work habits, how he practices, how he plays, how he conducts himself -- sets the mood and agenda for the whole team."

We could use another quarterback, but that quarterback should be chosen in the later rounds. The value is just as good. This team has other needs that should be addressed in the second and third rounds. Especially: OLB, ILB, WR, TE, DE, OL, just take your pick!

We have to give Beck a solid chance before we move on. That being said, I expect a QB draft pick, or Simms to be on the roster.

I'm sure our FO isn't exactly comfortable with our current QB situation.

Yes, we need a lot of positions, including the most important on the field.

of course Beck is an unknown, but so would whoever we pick up... why not sure up other positions that we still need help with and see if Beck pans out, if he doesn't show signs, then next year we can grab someone...

Anyone you pick in any round, especially post 1st is an unknown, so what is the difference?

but using another 2nd when we have a 2nd rounder already ready to go is overkill... what do we do next year if Beck flops and the other QB doesn't show anything? draft another one next year? when does it stop when we find another Marino or Rothlisberger who will dominate as a rookie? thats not realistic...

It is not about dominating as a rookie, it is about becoming a good NFL starter, none of which we have or know we have right now. If we don't draft one this year and Beck flops, then what? You have no backup plan. Why is that so difficult to understand? And I'm saying draft one to draft one, but to say we don't need one is ridiculous.

im not saying we dont need one, we only have 2, of course we need another... but im saying we dont need to use a high pick on one... should Oakland draft a QB? they dont have a backup plan?

should Arizona? Lienart hasn't shown hes a good NFL starter, do they need a backup plan?

your right any player can flop... should we draft a few more LT's incase Jake Long flops? you cant have a backup plan all time time, you have a limited number of players and picks, if you focus all your attention on backup plans you'll never get the initial plans at all the other positions you need

and when do you stop picking backup plans? if your not going to give our QBs a chance to play and show they are good, when will it end? and you cant base a whole QBs career on one, even two years... its an investment and you have to give it time...
