I was wondering why some tackles who are very good in college project better as a guard in the NFL. The one i can think of Leonard Davis was average at tackle and a mauler at tackle last season. Is there anything in specific like footwork or lack there of or anything else that makes them better guards than tackles. This isnt a crack on Jake Long or any other tackle in the draft or current NFL tackle im just curious.

Tackles need to have alot of footwork and leverage or else they will be toast. one week they have to go against 40lb less OLB who is faster then them and next week might go against a DE who is close to his weight and faster.IN a 3-4 the ends are bigger and stronger .Also needs to cover area against outside presure and also be able to hold the defender from getting inside or outside leverage.Alot of technique and footwork .

Gaurds technique`s on the other hand are like fighting inside a phone booth. the space is very limited and hence its all about attacking and blocking with no span to cover. But due to close proximity you better take your man on and no help will be provided.

playing RT is seldom harder than LT as LT in most hard cases gets help from the RB or TE and also the better gaurd is on the left side. On the right the tackle faces a LB/DE alone in a island.
