Why do we care what the pundits think?

I've been a member on this site for 5 years now and loyal Dolphins fan for 7 times that long. I don't post here often, and I start threads even less frequently. I much prefer to post when I have something of relative significance to say. I think this is one of those times... Something has struck me as odd recently. More now than in the past few years. Lately I've seen a bevy of threads from Dolphin fans complaining about a lack of respect from the media, Las Vegas, blogs, other teams and other teams' fans. The list goes on and on. My question is, why do we care?

Are we that self-absorbed that we need our egos stroked constantly? Do we feel that unless someone outside our fan-base says that we're good then we aren't? It's strange that we're filled with vitriol when certain members of the media give us a less than flattering write up, but we laud them when they give us a glowing review. I find it rather amusing and disconcerting at the same time. I feel that the media has it's uses. But if you depend on it as means to validate your beloved team's existence, then you're in for a long vacillating, undulating and ultimately disappointing ride. Just enjoy the ride folks. Even if that means leaving on your homeristic (yes, that's a word, because I just made it up :chuckle:) glasses. Enjoy your team for whatever you perceive them to be. Don't let anyone, especially Jets fans, convince you otherwise. Just my vent. Thoughts?

I think you hit the nail on the head with this one. We must really be some depressed, shut-ins, to really even give a damn about what the media thinks. I love my fins and I don't care what anyone else thinks.

Thanks. I really think we need to get over ourselves. On a side note, where in Atlanta are you from? I'm assuming that based on your username.
 
I've often wondered this. The "experts" are wrong so often, you'd think that being thier choice would scare one to death. But eveyone wants to hear how great the Dolphins are. The best is when somone will predict bad things about the Phins. They're idiots. Next day, if they say something good, they are geniuses.
 
people care because we feel personally connected to the team, so slighting the team is a personal slight.
 
Happens every year. Happens after FA, happens before and during Mock Drafts, happens after the NFL draft and it happens during the season with Power Polls.

It ain't nothing new. If the Dolphins aren't God's team, someone throws a hissy fit.
 
i agree, but at the same time we won the damn division last year - have gotten better as a team - and we still don't get any respect. i'd personally rather be an underdog because it makes that target on our backs smaller (we all remember what happened a few years back when we were predicted to be superbowl bound) but it still pisses me off some of the crap i've read this offseason. ranking 20 QB's around the league and not including the guy who was 2nd in MVP voting? really? that stuff is just frustrating.

I understand your frustration. But for the few players that playing the game itself isn't enough motivation, some of the stuff in the media is the spark they need to get the edge. I don't get it personally, but some strive off of the negative press.

absolutely. it's just sad because that's what they are supposedly paid to do and so many of them just suck at doing it. striving off the negative press was a good point - hope we use that next year.

Sports pundits have been reminding me of CNBC pundits gushing about how great the economy was in 2006 and 7.

Meanwhile every one else knows what's up.
