The reason I ask this if you look at the last stop Henning made as OC - Carolina you might see the TE isn't that big a key to the passing game.

2002 Kris Mangum 16rec 159yds, Jermaine Wiggins 8rec 45yds
2003 KM 17rec 199yds, JW 8rec 80yds 1TD, Mike Seidman 5rec 35 yds
2004 KM 34 rec 323yds 3TD's, MS 13rec 123yds 2TD's, Michael Gaines 4rec 34yds (Steve Smith misses year)
2005 KM 23rec 202yds 2TD's, MG 12rec 155yds 2TD's

The 34 receptions that Kris Mangum had in 2004 tie what David Martin did this year. I think we all have to examine what the offense might be like under Henning. I'm not saying it will be a carbon copy, but Carolina ran a run first type of game plan whilst nursing Delhomme along. It might be foolish to think we won't rely heavily on the run to begin the year IMO. I just though I'd share.

Oh yes, the WR in Henning's offense got most of the touches for a decent average. He also had a tall WR in NY and Car.

maybe he didnt use his TE.....cause his tight end was Kris Mangum...........?

Thats like saying Chan Gailey didn't use his TE b/c it was Earl Weaver.:err:

I think they are the same in that they never tried to replace bad TE's with good ones, or had much use for them in the passing game. But, like I said I don't know if it will be the same but it is interesting.

TE's that have the ability to get open and catch the ball are invaluable security blankets for QB's, especially young QB's.

Good point. If I had Steve Smith, I wouldn't be calling Kris Magnum to head out often.

Then again, there's also the other reasons why we need a TE - Martin absolutely blows at pass protection. He's horrible. Peelle could do just fine I believe, but even then he's got holes in his game. If we can improve the position by providing a better blocker and pass catcher, why not?

Absolutely, but it is an interesting thing to look at.

I think that is based more on what BP likes to do then our OC and HC in reference to why people believe a TE is so important.

A good TE can be one of your best threats because of the LB coverage they generally get, coaches that do not utilize this are, well, they are making a big mistake!

The Panthers also had many other weapons on the offensive side of the ball. The running back tandem of Foster/Davis, the receivers Steve Smith, Muhsin Muhammad and Ricky Proehl, and some solid players on the offensive line. Not to mention Jake Delhomme when he became the starter. We have none of this.

What we have is David Martin who gave us virtually nothing last year.

In 2000 Henning was with NYJ I believe and Becht had 14 rec, and Wiggins had 11 rec.

I'm telling you guys, it might be something to watch for. What are we really doing with a TE.

You stole what I was going to say Like2God. I would like to point out to the people laughing at Mangum that the Panthers really haven't been any good since Walls and Muhammed left. Delhomme sucks and would rather throw to the other team than the TE also.

Bill P. always had a good TE on his team since day 1

A great point

Everywhere Parcells has been he's made sure to bring in a TE who can play the game. Whether it was:

Mark Bavaro with the Giants
Ben Coates with the Patriots
Kyle Brady (who was a high draft pick that Rich Kotite had drafted) with the Jets

and of course
Jason Witten with the Cowboys

Except Parcells isn't the coach. And I never said IT WILL happen, just that it is something to watch out for. I've tried to find the NYJ stats from before 2000 and haven't had any luck so far to see how it breaks down. But if it adds up to 8 years of not had a TE with over say 40-45 catches then I think it is more than a coincidence.

Kyle Brady whilst good when young, was never a big receiving threat. He was teammate of mine in college, so I have a spot for the guy but he hasn't been seen as a receiving TE in years.
