Dolphins special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi knew he’d get questions Thursday about kick returner Jakeem Grant and kicker Andrew Franks after coaching decisions Sunday suggested a lack of confidence in each.
That’s not the case with either player, Rizzi insisted, although he acknowledged that Grant’s four mishandled returns in the last three games is “certainly cause for concern.”
Grant didn’t return another punt Sunday after his latest fumble; Jarvis Landry replaced him.

Jakeem Grant on his 74-yd return touchdown

Miami Dolphins WR Jakeem Grant, has mixed feelings about his 74 yard punt return for a touchdown in loss to the Titans.
But Rizzi said Grant “definitely will be back there again,” and likened his rookie’s struggles to those of potential Hall of Famer Devin Hester, who had eight fumbles in his first NFL season and seven more in Year 2.
“It's one of those things, it's a learning process,” Rizzi said. “One of the hardest things to do in football is go back there and return a punt -- judge it and field it and make good decisions. Again, we're going to keep working with him. We know, it's obvious what he can do with the ball in his hands. He's already proven that to everybody. I don't think there's anybody who can deny the fact that when he's got the ball in his hands, he's an electric guy. He can make people miss and he can make big plays.”
Rizzi added: “We've got to get him better. We've got to improve on it. But he will be back there, no doubt about it.”

Not too worried. The transition into the NFL has been a mixed bag for Grant. Relieve him of some of his duties now, sure. Give him an offseason to reflect on the tape and catch a whole lotta punts and kicks. Then if the problem persists next year we have a problem.

I think theyre going to shelve hi or relegate him to sp duties but not returning. You ca just see that Drake is waaaaaaaaaaayyy better and quiker with better hands.

We can't afford to be turning the ball over on special teams. Put the guy in the field for a few take offs..that's it!

I keep think the play that could work for him right now is a reverse. He don't have to worry about catching the ball. It would be a hand off to him and if they bite on it he can take it to the house.

Ozzy rules!!

I like Drake as much as anyone but I don't know that any of those things are true.

Drake is nowhere near quicker than Grant. It's not even close.

Hopefully grant can bring it all together with consistently, judgement, hands, etc... because if he can he will be a TD threat every time he's back there.

No reason not to. He's a super explosive player that looks like he's trying to do to much at times. He's a 6th round draft pick, he wants to prove his worth. His job is not guaranteed. The coaches want to see him succeed because they know how valuable a speedy guy like Jakeem is. If Gase and co can coach this kid up and transform him into not just a returner but a threat in the passing game, this offense starts to become too much to handle.

Only way im giving him a punt return is if the scoreboard says it...or im completely rams level ineffective on offense

Otherwise juice catch those suckers

This kids not putting one on the ground any other way this week for me

I would let him play through it. His TD vs Tennessee shows you what he's capable of. And he's had a lot of nice returns on kicks in general. If I'm protecting a lead late in a tight game, yes, I want Jarvis back there. Otherwise I'm rolling the dice w Grant. He's going to run a good number back for TDs in his career.

I'm a firm believer in letting rookies play through their growing pains, but the more the team starts thinking about playoffs the more you have to consider not having him back there. If you're not going anywhere the risk of losing a game because of an error might be acceptable. But as the pressure of the playoffs increases you would hate to see Grant or anyone make a mistake that ended up costing the team a spot in the post season. It's not just for the team's sake but also the player. Grant was obviously crushed after muffing the punt against the Chargers even though the team won. I could only imagine the blow to his confidence if he did the same thing during a playoff run and the Dolphins lose a game.
