Why don't teams always go for the 2pt conversion in preseason?

I was wondering about this last night. We all admit that preseason games don't really matter if you win/lose... it's all about evaluating talent and learning new schemes. So why doesn't any team just attempt to make a 2pt conversion after every TD? It's not like the extra point kick shouldn't be automatic... and if it isn't, you fire the kicker! By practicing the 2pt conversion, you are not only practicing for the time when you NEED to convert, but you are also practicing a goal-line TD effort (in a way). I would think that is much more valuable than to play it safe and kick the extra point... in a game that doesn't matter...

good point..they should at least go for 2 a lot more often.

You do want to get the extra point team some work..

good point...the only reason i see why you wouldn't is if you have a position battle with the kicker, other then that i think that's a good point

Very valid point.

I can't speak to why they don't do it more often, though I suspect it might have something to do with public perception, and at least a little bit of not wanting to completely not care about the final outcome of the game.

Gee, because you don't want to show your -one play a year that may get you into the playoffs- during the preseason? Why expose them during the pre-season for all to see? Also, the kicker who misses in the pre-season can be cut, it's much harder to replace him during the season and you can also fix his problems during the pre-season.

Exactly, I would imagine they have 3 or 4 plays they work on at each practice specifically for 2 pt. conversions, I doubt they would would want to show them during preseason. Also, how pissed would everyone be if we had a major injury on a 2 pt conversion during preseason?

Also in preseason they are trying to simulate real game situations, and you don't go for two every single time.

That play needs practice too. An extra point is not automatic. If the guys up front don't block right, and let too much push up the middle, it could get blocked. Every aspect of the game is important, and needs to be practiced in game situations.

I hope there are more than 3 or 4 plays for 2pt conversions. Because, like the poster stated, it's not just a 2pt conversion, but it's just like a play to try and get a touchdown. I don't think that they should do it all the time, but I do think they should do it more than just when the score dictates it.

and because people bet on the preseason games........there is seems to be an unspoken rule that you play these games as you would a reg season game........and I would assume that the multi-billion $ gambling industry has a not-so-small influence on that.

maybe they want to see how there kicker does at extra points.

they do miss a few.

and if they miss, they should be cut... (I DO MEAN CUT... GOD I HATE MY KICKER!!!!).

Good point, maybe coaches are used to not going for it since they arent used often anyways.

Maybe they aren't used very often because the coach has no confidence in the team's ability to make the conversion... Probably not the case though.

I figure it's because you although it doesn't count, you still have to treat it like a real game situation....in other words, would you go for a 2pt conversion in a real game....this teaches the players what to do in real game like situations....if you score first and don't make the 2 pt conversion, and your opponent scores next and goes for the kick, you're already losing. That wouldn't happen in a real game.
