Why don't we trade for Shawn Merriman?

He just changed his agent, maybe not so much anymore.

Don't kid yourself. Just because he changed agents doesn't mean he doesn't want big money. Hence the reason players hate getting tagged as a franshise player. They always want more money.

Even if the Chargers get thier second round pick for him and he has to sign a one year deal with the team that traded for him, he will still work out a better deal either before or after the season. And if they don't then he moves on to the next team.

the chargers had 3 different trades lined up pre-draft but were all stifled by his agent's contract requirements. I think he realizes at this point that his exorbitant contract requirements have become his own worst enemy.

If he came cheap and actually contributed on the field with numbers I would love it.

Dobbins is a replacement for Ayodele and competition for Crowder. Has nothing to do with Merriman or OLB position.

What cafinfan was referring to was that if we had wanted Sir Roid Rage, we would have had him included in our draft day trade with SD instead of another one of their lbs, the now dolphin Tim Dobbins

maybe, maybe not.

maybe, maybe not.
im just clarifying what he meant; personally he has been a total bust since "lights out" got busted for steroids.
if im not mistaken, since his breakout year he has blown out his knee, got busted for roids, and strangled Tila Tequila. If the production on the field was even close to the trouble, sure he would be nice. But since thats not the case, no thanks on the headache.

I understand the difference in OLB and ILB.

Damanref10 was right in what I mean by my original comment.

On September 6, 2009 Merriman was arrested and charged with battery and false imprisonment. An acquaintance, reality TV star Tila Tequila, claimed in an arrest complaint[16] that he choked and restrained her when she tried to leave his home.[17] The charges were dismissed less than a week later on September 11, 2009.[18]
In December, 2009, Merriman filed a civil suit against Tequila, alleging intentional interference with contract, unfair competition, and trademark infringement. He claimed that Tequila improperly used his own "Lights Out" logo and disrupted negotiations for t-shirts to be marketed by Wal-Mart.[19] She failed to respond to the suit at all, and a default judgment was entered in his favor for $2 million. For a limited time, she has the right to appeal the default and attempt to defend herself.
Sorry, hardly sounds like he's done something that Brandon Marshall hasn't.

Oh, and he didn't have a "breakout year". His first 3 years in the league were double digit sacks and 2 of them were pro bowls. The year he didn't make the pro bowl he was the NFL defensive rookie of the year.

But you're right, the roids are troubling, and the injuries might even be more troubling.

His production was down last year coming off of the injury. Maybe he stays down the rest of his career, but I bet he returns to double digit sacks in 2010.

Oh, and there are less headaches in Merriman's history than there were with Marshall. A lot less.

I bet u there would be Cap room if we dropped Channing Crowder, Justin Smiley and maybe Jason Allen. Merrimar and has not had the best numbers for 2 years straight so we might be able to negotiate a nice deal since he is not necessarily playing like the hottest linebacker in the game right now.

That's because he's not using steroids any longer (for fear of suspension) and injuries. He's not the player he was 2 yrs ago, hence the Charger's desire to dump him.
He's done and isn't worth even a 3rd rd pick.
He's just a big name at this point. Nothing more, nothing less

I like Merriman but he isn't worth a #2 pick or the money he is going to be asking for. His play has been on the decline since his 2nd year, and his reputation is horrendous due to the steroids and Tila among other things.

You can't compare Merriman to Marshall, because Marshall has proven to be an elite WR since he's been in the league. With our desperate need for a true #1 WR, the FO took a chance on him. After our draft, the need just isn't as high for Merriman, even if he did stay consistent with his probowl play (which he hasn't).

After this year, the Chargers might not even keep him the way they have made it clear about him being on the block. Might as well see what we have with the young guys we have rather than taking a chance with Shawn. I do see Merriman playing better this year, but right now...I don't see the FO taking a chance with him.

it's no coincidence that AJ Smith, a pretty good judge of talent, decides to offload LT, Cromartie -and now Merriman if the price is right. Unlike the risk in acquiring Marshall, who comes with his own problems, Merriman hasn't been healthy/performed for 2 seasons and his greatest glories have apparently coincided with his steroid use. Comparing his situation with Marshall is not apples to apples; neither is comparing it with Ricky and the new leaf he turned over, since at that point he was already on the roster and cost us little in compensation or risk.

So thanks but no thanks on Merriman.

Like many have said, his best days seem to be during his roid use days. I don't see the value honestly...and this is coming from someone who doesn't see Wake (today) as a quality/proven WOLB.

SD drafted L. English in the 1st last year for a reason.

NO to the contract he wants and no to the compensation needed for him.

He has done something Marshall hasn't....got busted for roids and sucked ever since....pass

Hes too much of a liability in terms of being injury prone, and a bit overrated IMO
